The Gambler.
This is a remake of the 1974 film and they really shouldn't have bothered.
Of course, It doesn't help that the main character is a dick and you instantly feel a disliking for him, If they were going for an anti-hero of a main character then they failed miserably.
Thee premise is that A guy is a gambling addict, he is already in heavy debt to a mobster at the start of the film and as the film continues he becomes further in debt and despite winning at blackjack several times and winning enough money to pay off most of the debt he manages to lose it all and the gangsters are becoming inpatient.
The back story consists of Him being a novelist and his book making $17000 and him being a literary professor and having an odd relationship (non sexual) with a bright young female student, who didn't do a great deal to bring any credibility to the flick.
Were there any bright spots? A decent performance by John Goodman and the pleasure of seeing the main character (Played poorly by Mark Wahlberg) get his ass handed to him a couple of times, but far from being able to save the film.
This film was a big reminder of why I am much more likely to put an indie film on then a hollywood blockbuster. A stinker.
