How can a football club be anything or represent anything without the players. I mean sure we support the club and players come and go but in the time they are here their actions define part of the club's identity. In fact the players have to represent the club and it is that representation that can make you a fan of the club and get you to support it.

Playing football is their job, it is what they are paid to do but there is also a part emotional investment. Players must get a certain pride from representing the club from playing for it. You can't go through all the sacrifices players have to make to become good footballers if you only do it for the money. Sure they earn alot but money is not a very good motivator, that is science speaking. It only motivates to a certain extend and it has more importance of a demotivator, the lack of money demotivates players because they expect to earn a fair salary and they benchmark with other players. So beside a salary that a player earns there must be something that motivates them to play for a club else they could never reach the performances that are required on professional football at this stage.

That emotional investment is spurred on by the fans support. I mean go talk to a player and ask how it feels when 80k people are chanting your name when you are on the pitch. It is pure adrenaline, it is a kick. They want to play well and win matches and silverware for those fans in return for the support. But that support can't exist if the fans don't feel you are a part of the club, if you don't represent the club, are a part of it than such support is impossible. So yea fans pressume a certain degree of emotional investment from the players in the club else they wouldn't go out on a cold and rainy day to support them. Sure they don't support one individual but rather the team as a whole and in fact the club which has existed out of many different teams in the past but you are part of that team as a player, you are part of the club's history. So if the fans come out and cheer for the club, they cheer for you aswell.

The fans will always thank a player for great service and for loyalty. A player doesn't owe a club any loyalty imo but he does owe the club respect. The way in which you leave the club is an action to shapes the way you represent the club, it has to happen with respect for the club and its fans and beside a financial thing it is most certainly also an emotional thing. Fans need to understand why the player leaves and they need to be able to accept the way in which he leaves. The player must do everything he can to show that respect to the fans. I could accept De Geas reasons for leaving the club altough I think he leaves to soon and should have stayed atleast a couple more years also for his own career. But the way in which he leaves, with the entire contract situation feels like a dickmove from his agent. Just doesn't feel fair that we have to let him go in this situation, he should have signed a contract long ago.

I'd be far less disgusted with it if he had signed a contract renewal a year or two ago and would want to leave for Real Madrid now. I mean he'd ask to leave, we'd say ok if you want to than you can go but only if we can agree a deal with Real Madrid. And either we'd get fair compensation or Real Madrid would have to say no to the transfer.

Now it feels like De Gea (his agent) has forced us in a situation where we can basically not do anything but comply with his wish to go to Real Madrid and basically accept whatever it is that they would still want to pay for him. Feels like we have only become a detail in this entire situation, which feels wrong.

Top post. Spot on.

Get as much money as possible for him (at least €30m) and drive him to the airport.

United need to improve the team in other areas a lot more than they need to keep a goalkeeper. How many saves did DDG make that saved United points this season? 10? 15?

United can buy and need to buy a serious no.9 with that €30m that will score more goals than any amount of game-saving saves DDG could make. If that makes sense!

It makes perfect sense. Except for the small detail that we don't need to sell in order to buy.

We're meant to be (re)assembling a squad that can challenge for honours on all fronts, with effectively money no object. Keeping Dave wouldn't result in us being unable to sign another player.

FFS Dave, she's 5 years older then you. Find yourself a nice 19 year old British lass.

If it were a done deal then surely it will be announced in the coming days. No more distractions in terms of attempting to make the CL.

Good point. Both teams' seasons are now unofficially over so nothing holding it back.

I must admit, it's quite admirable that we've managed to make it such a hard decision for him. Besides for the obvious reasons of returning home etc., I think a lot of us are overlooking the fact that Casillas was probably his idol growing up. He now has the chance to replace a national hero and possibly fulfill a childhood dream of literally being Casillas one day.

Watch him move to Real and split up with Edurne by October/November time. Then his only memories will stem from avid reading of Juan Mata's blog and a scrap book full of pictures of himself along with Mata and Herrera. Tears streaming down his face with Eric Carmen's All By Myself playing on repeat.

I'm sticking with yes. Haven't seen anything from him suggesting he's about to leave. Think he'll sign an extension and leave after 2 or 3 more seasons for a world record fee for a keeper.

I actually don't think De Gea is as good as people rate him here. He's decent, but he has a long way to go before he can become world class. If we are able to get a good swap deal with Madrid, we should take it.
You really don't know what you're talking about

It never happens what you expect, so either he is not leaving or he leaves and we won't miss him as much as we think now.

On a serious note, I think it's all about Real Madrid sorting out their issues:
(a) Who is the manager next season? Is it still Ancelotti?
(b) What are the plans of San Iker? He is still a powerful person at Madrid, maybe even more powerful than the coach since he has a very close relationship to the president and his friends and the media. Real, I guess, wants both: A new keeper. Without Casillas losing face.
(c) What says the bookkeeper? If they find a club for Bale, they could be willing to spend more money for example on their goalkeeper.

In my opinion, if De Gea wants to leave, it should be all about the price tag. 30 mio? For a keeper we paid 20 a few years ago when he was something like a doubt if he can do it on the very big stage? 30 mio would not convince me. Sure, he has only one year left. But 30? In times, when every young boy who can tie his shoelaces costs 15? I would risk it: Real should pay much more - or David is one more season with us and they can have him for free after that - after playing another "bridging time" season concerning their goalkeeper position. (If I get it right, Real Madrid is not that much into hold-up-time.)

£25m or Carvajal seems fair. It's not the biggest loss, he is a top 3 goalkeeper, but we will get a great replacement and march on you know.

Congratulations , you are the winner of this weeks , rubbish post of the week and you are well place for rubbish post of the year.

Only just heard Van Gaal's comments on the situation.

Sorry lads but he's a goner, he'll be Real Madrid's number 1 next season.

Hang on, I see what you're doing, and it's a good idea.

Never rated him myself either... Madrid can have him the suckers!

Van Gaals statements about DDG are simple and direct. Yes. we want him to stay. If not we would not have offered him all that money. But we have lined up some very good replacements too.

And he has said the same about all positions.

We will be fine whatever happens.

The poll has finally gone tits up :(

Just thinking about those who say he owes us. My opinion is he got us back into the champions league - another keeper and we wouldn't have made it. Considering where we were at the start of the season, it's probably been the most important individual player performance since Ronaldo 08 (probably more important IMO). I think that's payment enough.

My Favourite utd player for the last couple of seasons. Sad to see him go but can understand a Spanish player wanting to go back to his own country where is parents and girlfriend live. I think he has always done his best for us and if he wants to move home then so be it, would prefer he didnt go.
