You know, thinking about this, I wonder if this is Van Gaal taking a swipe at Woodward?
The latter has been in a mickey swinging contest with Madrid all summer and seems determined to prove a point in the transfer market. Van Gaal on the other hand may have just wanted to get rid of a wantaway player and sort out a replacement asap. It's this quote that has me wondering:
“I cannot lead this process, I can only watch and observe and that is what I’m doing. I’m not participating in that process.”
Would be just like him to fall out with senior management at the club after all.
Good point, especially since he didn't really seem to rate him to begin with + he hasn't really said much good about him later on either.
After 1:0 win against Newcastle United: "David De Gea, this year, is unbelievable.
"In my career I have a lot of good goalkeepers, for example Edwin van der Sar was one of my goalkeepers and (Victor) Valdes also with Barcelona, but De Gea is having a great season.”
After De Gea made a mistake against Aston Villa: "The fact that he has played in every match is a sign of my satisfaction with him - of course it is.
"Otherwise, I would also change him. De Gea has had a marvellous season and everybody knows that.
"He was very important in a lot of matches and therefore I can't change him."
After draw against Arsenal: "I don’t think I can persuade him because he knows everything he has at Manchester United. I don’t have to say something because he can feel it every day. You have seen the fans – unbelievable. When he is going, he is losing that. Here he has a lot of credits. He has to decide.
"He has to decide because we have given a fantastic contract because we want him to stay. Fantastic season, I think."
This. I called it in the match day thread. Everyone seemed convinced that DDG will start but I can't see it.It's the right call. LvG knows if de Gea is in the right frame of mind to play or not. It also sends a message to him.
No. The onus should be on Valdes to do that. LVG has to maintain his stance or he'll lose the respect of the team.Agree with this, Van Gaal needs to put the team before his ego and kiss and make up with Valdes, even if it's only for a temporary period until we get the position sorted.
No hugs for thugs, brah.I blame Juan. Where were his hugs when they were needed most?
LvG is unusually candid for a manager; I tend to think he calls it as he sees. I believe him.And how do you know this? Are you basing this solely on LVG's say-so? After all, it's not as if he's never made any head-scratching decisions before. I'd fully expect DDG to act a professional and be able to put the transfer saga aside for a couple hours on Saturday. By far our best option at goalkeeper even under current circumstances. If someone isn't ready, I'd wager it'd be the player who just joined the club a week ago on a free.
Unless Sergio Ramos becomes available, the De Gea saga will go the exact same way as the Ronaldo saga from 7 years ago:
- Always been linked with Real Madrid, this Summer it hots up and there is no secret he wants to go
- Some fans come to terms with it and want his departure, some want him to announce he is staying, either way the uncertainty is doing everyone's head in
- Player doesn't show his face for the first few weeks of the season (A bit different with De Gea - he played pre season..but still he is missing the Spurs game)
- The window shuts with us standing firm despite his head being in Madrid, everyone saying he is gone realises ''shit he is still here'' and he slowly comes back into action
- He isn't special for the first couple of months, but the fans are enjoying other players
- By March he is unreal again, everyone is jizzing over him and the player has realised while he is at United he can still boss it without acting like a baby
- In May people think he will stay after finishing the season so well, De Gea may even have signed a new contract earlier so he doesn't go on a free
- June comes, he is straight out the door..causing some shock at how we seemed to just let it happen, but people again realise he was always going to go and rather than a meltdown there is discussions about who the replacement is before we sign somebody very underwhelming
Once bitten twice shy? You'll be okay...bringing back those bad memories of seeing "RONALDO SIGNS FOR REAL FOR 80M"
just after Fergie had said we wouldn't "sell them a virus", and with seemingly no warning after presuming we'd batted Madrid off.
sad times.
It was about a year to be fair and - as Fergie points out in his book, there was little else we could do. At least we made £80m on Ronaldo - De Gea on a free, when we could cash-in now, would be pretty stupid (regardless of the fact it's Real).just after Fergie had said we wouldn't "sell them a virus",

Just reading LVG's comments in this article - believe De Gea is definitely messed up mentally about all that's going on. If I were him, I would sign a contract extension with United immediately and get on with my career. Perez and co unsettling the player is just not on imo.Ogden's new article confirms the issue is Madrid simply not paying the fee we want, it's messing with DDG's head, and it's messing up our start the season.
Karma is a wonderful thing and I pray this will come back and bite them on arse some day soon.
At this point we either need to sell or keep him here and still get another number one (only if Madrid won't give us a fair price, I definitely don't want us bowing down to them and getting rid on the cheap). I can't believe we've let it get to the point where it's affecting our season and we have no real first choice keeper.
well those who voted no like me were wrong - he's still at united. it is next season.

Can't De Gea see them for what they really are?
I didn't change my vote from Yes. Knew he'd stay as I knew we'd be very stubborn about it.

Well, what do you want to do when Real is haggling with price, making bids that are nowhere near De Gea's value? If we bought for example Lloris, Real Madrid would have even more of the upper hand in the De Gea transfer, because we couldn't go into a new season with two goalkeepers who expect to be first choice. It's just a very difficult situation and all because Perez is being a cnut basically.
different poll possibly. not sure he's staying.
“We have seen in our training sessions and matches he is not the David de Gea of last year,” Van Gaal said. “He tries, he does his upmost best, but it is a difficult situation. He cannot manage this situation. A human being is more than just a player and he cannot manage. So he will not play and you will have to wait to see who does. We have to play our first match, and this is the most important match, so I want players who can focus only on the match. He is not capable of doing that.”
If he sticks around, he'll get over it and try to secure his place in the Spanish Euro squad. He's a professional after all, not an adolescent. Is he really worth keeping then? A De Gea at 50% isn't better than the alternatives on the market IMO.
De Gea is not Schneiderlin though. It's not that I question his professionalism, but they are after all different people and will handle situations differently. If he sticks around, he'll get over it and try to secure his place in the Spanish Euro squad. Similar to Schneiderlin as someone already pointed out.
