He can run in a straight line with the ball under control, once he hits an obstacle he puts the handbrake on and plays it 3 yards sideways, that isn't dribbling.
Long John Silver is more two footed than Valencia.
It isn't just about that. Januzaj can play on t either side as well as through the middle. They have Reus, Kagawa and Mikhitaryan as 1st choice with Hoffman as backup. Unless januzaj trumps Hoffman straightaway, he won't even be the 1st back up as he's simply a loaned. No real incentive for them to develop him unlike here.
You should have just ended it there.I'd rather we didn't particularly use Valencia on the wings all that much, especially not ahead of Mata. For all of Mata's slow play and build-up, he's capable of being quite productive. He'll score, get an assist, put through an exquisite little pass, and generally make stuff happen. Valencia's a lot more quick and direct, but he's often ineffective. He'll speed down the wing with the ball, but it means little when he just whacks it off the defender, or sends it into the stands. I'd be all for him playing on the wing if he can find some good form, but it's been years since he had an excellent season for us as a winger.
I think he'll tend to be more of a backup player, both on the wings and at right-back. While he was sometimes dodgy defensively, he put in some decent displays at full-back and was arguably of more use there than he was on the wings. If Darmain is injured or needs rested at all, I'd be fine with Valencia jumping in for a while. Same with the wings: I don't particularly want him as our main starting option, but he'll be there as a replacement if we need him.
Nope, I'm done hoping for him to regain his earlier form, he's beyond repair far as I am concerned.
Re: OP. Hasn't LvG tried Fellaini and Herrera on the right? Mata's doing fine there and he rarely ever gets injured, so we shouldn't worry about this happening.
I know, but I do recall Fellaini taking players on the right flank.. I definitely do. It looked insane, and was probably not more than a few minutes. They played on the right of a diamond for a couple of games, and Herrera also on the right of a three later on. I'm sure I don''t need to point out the flaw of Fellaini standing on the touchline crossing the ball in to our 5"9 striker though, and both players are obviously not wingers.
Yup. We're all scratching our heads i think.I still cannot even begin to understand why we let Januzaj go while having three players capable of playing wide.
If he can't trump Hoffman or take over Kagawa then he shouldn't even bother coming back let alone worry about development. We can't have it both ways.. Talk up the kid then at the same time not believe he can't compete with player of a lesser quality bar Reus.
I don't even think Valencia would be capable of voting....
As this would involve putting a cross in a box!
Valencia is RB cover, nothing more, nothing less.
Can't believe people are suggesting Valencia to replace our best attacking player this season. Just because Mata slows down the attack, it doesnt change the fact that he is our most productive attacker after Rooney, and our most creative player. He might be short and weak, but he is very good at retaining possession, which is why LVG likes him. He also offers great movement off the ball.
Beckham right now would do a better job. Valencia can't cross for shit these days.
Think this may have to become an option at some stage this season. Our wingers/wide options at present are:
Memphis
Young
Mata
After that I'm struggling. Perhaps Martial will play there for us. But we are equally light at centre-forward, so need him there anyway. Pereira perhaps? It isn't his natural position, and may encounter similar problems as Mata out there.
Given Memphis is a young player who shouldn't really play 60 games for us, and that we have no reserve team wingers who are close, and injuries will inevitably occur - surely we need to consider re-integrating Valencia?
Personally, weighing up pros and cons, I'm not entirely against seeing him there for a couple of games now, even with our squad at full health, in place of Mata. I'd like to see what we can do with genuine pace out on the right as well as the left. I'm no fan of his, but watching slow build up with Mata there is painful at times.

If we loaned out Januzaj only to re-integrate Valencia into a winger I will turn against LVG. For that sole reason.
