Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Wicker Tree.

The Wicker Man this was not, but it wanted to be so badly, but if just failed.
The story was pretty much the same, with a couple of twists but not anything you did not see coming a mile away.
There was no horror in it, no scary bits.
Having said that it was not has bad as I expected it to be, Christopher Lee makes a brief appearance as an old man in a flash back, who may or may not be intended as an elderly Lord Summerisle, but while his ill-health prevented him from taking on the role of the main villain his shoes are well filled by Graham McTavish, who provides some much needed fire and brimstone in contrast to the rather stilted performances from the two lead characters, although there were some good performances from the supporting cast, most notably Clive Russel as the butler Beame and Honeysuckle Weeks as the promiscuous pagan Lolly.

I would say it was worth a watch, but only just.

Rogue

Just seen this fairly unknown Australian horror film on BBC 1 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Basically what happens is a group of tourists get stuck on an island with a hungry crocodile in it's waters. The plot is simple, but makes for a very good and tense film.

The cinematography is great, this is probably as good an advert for the Australian outback (if you forget about the killer croc) that you could possibly have, the shots are absolutely beautiful. The directing is brilliant, you can see that this was inspired by Jaws and as Jaws is a very good film, it's good that it is. The croc is treated the same as the shark in jaws and done just as well as Spielberg. The acting is also great, you really believe in the characters and emphasize with their predicament. You can really feel the tension in their performances.

Rogue doesn't scare me, but that doesn't mean it's a bad horror film, it's extremely tense all the way and you are on the edge of you're seat. It's a film you've probably never heard of, I hadn't, but if you have the chance you should defiantly give it a try.

Pay the Ghost

Nic Cage plays A professor frantically searches for his son who was abducted during a Halloween parade.
Nothing new here in terms of horror here, pretty standard fare.
The movie has a couple of scare-moments which aren't all that bad, but not spectacular either. Their is a scene with a clairvoyant (they seem to be mandatory in most horrors these days), that doesn't add much to the story, but it stands out because the music.
This is an average movie, but that isn't the actors fault. They did the best they could. If you're a Nicolas Cage fan, than you won't be disappointed.
The ending leaves it wide open fora Pay the Ghost 2.

The Gallows

20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy - but soon discover that some things are better left alone.
Has found footage films go , this was not too bad, there was quite a few scary bits in it.
The twist at the end was OK , but most will see it a mile off, very much reminded me of the first Scream film.

What the feck happens to the co-pilot in the helicopter? Seriously, he just vanishes?

He gets out at the same camp as where Sam Worthington and Emily Watson's character are alongside the equipment they off load and pick up Josh Brolin's Character.

I thought overall not a terrible movie but a very average one and I had the same problem you had as at times I couldn't make out who was who possibly because I saw it in 3D but also because they haven't done enough to visually differentiate each character.

Southpaw
Exactly my type of film, love sports about redemption, training montages, an all business trainer, great music... Basically all the cliches. Throw in a great performance or two and you have the recipe for my type of film. Loved it 9/10

Double Indemnity - the baddies have to lose. It had to be like that in good old days. 7/10

Legend was pretty poor, overacted and with no real story or plot. Couldn't give a shit when the emotional moment happened, and Hardy's Ronnie performance was laughably cartoon. I was really disappointed.

The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies: I thought it was alright with a lot of action scenes, but not much more. Thorin joining the dark side and then coming back to light was done good.

Did the eagles won the battle for the good ones in the books too? I don't remember that part. And Aragorn would have been still a kid, when Legolas was sent to find the Strider (who wasn't going by that name). It was kind of unnecesarry considering that the book readers find any change (especially the illogical ones) annoying, while non-readers wouldn't get that part.

Anyway, I think that if they had cut all the cheesy things, didn't invent a big baddy, cut Orlando Bloom and Kate Lost, and made a movie instead of three, then it would have been a cracking movie. 7/10

One of the most perfect movies ever made. It's sad that Hollywood doesn't make films like this anymore.

Isn't Hollywood but it's a great Australian film inspired by Jaws.

How to get away with murder (TV Series)

Story about a law professor employing her students to help her with real courtroom case. Viola Davis won an emmy for her acting here.

Overall a very interesting series, but the political correctness in this movies seems to get forced at maximum overdrive, almost all the sexual relationship is varied with different race
(black/white, black/black white, gay/asiangay, gay/latino gay, white/indian descent, black girl with a fiancee that's allegedly gay, and that's just half a season)

I don't mind a bit of variety and PC, but the amount of PC they have in this movies is mind boggling and it really feels forced on my throat.

I re-watched this last night and I found my self thinking, why does this film get so much stick? I thought it was brilliant.

The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, It would be great to experience Pandora for like a minute (I don't like big animals that can kill me). The overall concept of the film is original and you don't see many films like it. It's a very enjoyable film that works because it immerses you in this world, and takes you on an adventure where you feel emotional because of what the humans are trying to do, and the acting too helps.

Although some of the dialogue isn't great and then end denouement goes on for a bit too long I still think it's great.

Prime Suspect (tv series)

Really excellent acting across the board, from major characters to minor. Excellent, gripping police drama.

America Beauty - Too weird, even for Kevin Spacey's standards. I must say that in the last few years, he has become my favorite actor. 8/10

Because the plot is shit and predictable. As are the characters and the dialogue.

Obviously the cinematography is beautiful, but there is more to a great movie than cinematography.

Four Weddings and a fecking Funeral

The first thing you're probably wondering is why any man worth his testicles would want to watch this massive gayfest of a film for any reason other than that his missus chose the movie. The answer is that it appeared in the Guardian's list of the greatest British films ever made so I decided to give it a chance.

What a mistake that was. Two hours of aneurysm inducing wankery about love and relationships with not one iota of wit or irony to make it tolerable. There's literally not a single funny piece of dialogue in the entire movie.

But the biggest of this film's many problems was that the main female love interest, the focal point of the film for feck's sake, was really rather dull and unremarkable. The fact that Andie McDowell was the actress involved was a major reason for this, but the writing certainly didn't help. Throw in Hugh Grant in rent-a-fop mode and a cast of characters whom, presumably, were supposed to be endearing and eccentric, but were actually just a bit annoying, and you have all the ingredients for a two hour cinematic experience in which your only motivation to continue is to see if it eventually gets any better.

Nope. People I'm 17 I haven't even heard of these films. Well, actually I've heard of Last samurai.

What I'm trying to show you is that the premise of the story is very old and has been used in multiple movies. The white (american) comes to an Indigenious (Indian/Mayan/Aztec/WildWest/Japanese/Cambodia/Vietnam/etc) and somehow the good american becomes sympathetic with them, married one of their girls and fought their war against fellow bad ass American (often portrayed as cruel/barbaric/etc)

Dances with wolves, Poca Hontas, the Last Samurai, are the most similiar plotted movie. Apart from the cinematography and visual feast the movie itself is pretty much cliche ridden.

The Maltese Falcon - Humphrey Bogart in the typical Humphrey Bogart role, in a noir movie. Bar some awkward cheesy scenese, it was quite an interesting movie with definitely surprising things. The end was different on what I expected. 8/10

Not only slow but the most pretentious bollocks ever put on celluloid. And half the themes it supposedly examines it either does in a 6th form mystic nonsense way (existentialism) or gets horribly wrong (the human evolution AI and human evolution themes). The only thing it got a bit right was some of the space travel stuff.
Come on now, it is a sci-fi movie based on a sci-fi book. It wasn't supposed to be scientifically accurate. Well, for most part it wasn't supposed to be so. When it comes to HAL, I think that Kubrick and Clarke (writer of the book) had a conversation with Marven Minsky (back then, the leading researcher in AI) about that part. I think that HAL part are some of the best pieces that have been ever done in cinematography.

From Kubrick's movies (I know that you dislike them), only Dr. Strangelove is clearly better.

Career Opportunities - The movie is completely shit. But:
