Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Jaws 19:

After 19 attempts, you'd think they'd have managed to create a realistic looking shark by now! Like the original, the fake shark doesn't ruin the film but Still!
Max Spielberg does a pretty decent job of cranking up the tension and pulls off the odd jump scare quite successfully. Overall, it mirrors all the sequels in that it still doesn't match up to the original, however it's probably the best one that doesn't star Roy Scheider.

Haha nice Back to the future reference.

The House of the Devil: A very well-made slow burning throwback to 70s and 80s horror. Might be too slow and lacking in body count for non-aficionados.

Inside Out was pretty good. Some really nice moments and I laughed loudly at least 3 times.

Philosophy of mind errors aside (it's a film afterall), the films internal logic seemed kind of sketchy. Fluctuating levels of "self" awareness in the homunculi, who is driving who? and the bending of the chaos in mind world to match up with that of the external reality were just a few of the mild niggles I had. The rules could have been simpler and less contradictory.

I liked that it didn't overly confuse the human story and it was confident enough to set the drama in the life of the mind. The cat joke at the end, although not entirely original, is the funniest thing I've seen this year.

The Lobster: First film in English by Yorgos Lanthimos. Colin Farrell's wife leaves him and so, according to the rules of society, he must go stay in a hotel, where he has 45 days to fall in love or else he will be surgically transformed into an animal. Extra days can be earned at the hotel by successfully hunting the single people who live in the woods. Being single is not allowed. Darkly funny and obviously bizarre satire about our focus on relationships that gets away from itself once Ferrell escapes from the hotel, lives with the single people in the woods and falls for Rachel Weisz. The central quirk of being turned into an animal fades out of the film apart from the odd camel wandering around in the background. Not bad but could have been better and also impossible to recommend to 9.5 out of every 10 people.

Sicario: 7/10

A bit of wasted potential IMO. A few excellent scenes but everything in between is quite dull and uninteresting. I also do not understand why they keep making scenes in which 2 people stare at eachother dramatically for literally 30-60 seconds, I don't see how that adds value to the scene. I think it's unnecessary slow and just annoying. Overall a decent movie but I hoped for much more.

Steve Jobs

Not a biography and based on imaginary conversations at 3 of Jobs's significant product launches. An impressionistic, dialogue-heavy film in 3 acts. Jobs is on screen throughout. Interesting for tech and apple fans to see into his character, but perhaps not compelling enough to appeal to a wide audience. It concentrates on his mid-career struggles and shows nothing of his period of greatest success in the last decade of his life. Solid writing, acting and production. 7/10

I didn't even know Eli Roth had hype.....I just know he's some mate of QT. But his films mostly go unnoticed really by most.

98% of pure horror films aren't good so it's very unlikely that's he's made a good one. His reputation is based off of Cabin Fever and Hostel mostly.

Where is this 2% that I've missed? I can't remember the last decent scary movie I saw.

To be fair, he's only made about 4 movies in 20 years, the first two of those being box offices smashes on small budgets, which is why the industry loves him (in the same way that Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity get so much love ... they're crap but still make bucket loads at the box office).

Babadook, The Visit, It Follows, Starry Eyes, Conjuring, Insidious, Sinister, Clown and The Houses October Built were all pretty good.

It Follows and Babadook from the last twelve months. Both great, original and scary.

Babadook, The Visit, It Follows, Starry Eyes, Conjuring, Insidious, Sinister, Clown and The Houses October Built were all pretty good.

Cheers. I've seen the Babdook knocking around so will give that a try and will check out It Follows after that.

Wasn't too impressed with the Conjuring or Insidious. The Conjuring in particular was a real let down because the trailer scared the life out of me but the movie itself was very meh.

Insidious was meh. Sinister is scary (But I did see it at the cinema).

I try to avoid horror film trailers. They really do spoil the films.

Anybody who finds horror films scary must have trouble sleeping without the lights on. They're fecking dreadful. Always some malevolent force who's just malevolent for the sake of being malevolent. "Ohhh, I'm gonna scare this shit out of this family cos I feel like it and I like to express myself!" Dire.

You have to lose yourself into it's world a little bit. Plus, there are many horror films (i.e. the two mentioned Babadook and It Follows) that are not like this at all.

Did you see The Exorcism of Emily Rose?

Possibly... I've seen a lot of films where girls get exorcised! Despite my qualms, I have seen a lot of horror films. I guess I'm waiting for Godot, so to speak.

Just had a look online. Yeah, seen it. Remember watching it in a Belgian hotel room (God, I feel like Proust). I don't remember the film, though. Any good?

Aye, suspension of disbelief is a must-have, I agree. I think my problem is, once I started asking, "Why so evil?" - and so few gave a decent answer - the fear factor just faded away.

Yeah, it's the only horror film I remember being quite scary. Not gory or anything cheap like that, just good psychological terror that sends chills down your spine. At least that's how I remember it.

I thought The Conjuring was a good horror movie, watched it alone in my room at night with a headset on.

How well a horror film works depends a lot on the conditions you watch them in and your mindset at the time. If you go into it feeling it's silly and no way you could be scared, it's sure they won't work on that level.

It follows and Babadook are good examples of recent well made films of the genre.

All James Wan's horror films have a sheen of professionalism that the majority of the genre lacks which always elevates them a bit. From a story point of view they're fairly standard. Sinister is the same, it's sold by Ethan Hawke and the cool Super 8 footage.

It Follows, The Babadook and Let the Right One In have been the most interesting horror films conceptually in recent times. The Guest is also excellent although barely horror.

And the sound editing/music, which was perfect. I really expected that film to be a turd, and it scared me quite a bit.

Mad Max.

Probably the only film that makes more sense when you are absolutely pissed. Still, absolutely brilliant film full of every thing you want in a action film. Easily the best film of the year IMO.

9/10

Particle Fever: More of a documentary than a film about scientists trying to understand the Higgs boson through the Large Hadron Collider. I was blown away by how much work actually went into making this place, and how long it actually took to build! If you're even slightly interested in physics and the universe you will love this.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

I only watched this because I wanted to watch the Exorcism of Molly Hartley, it was not that good, nothing you have not seen before.
Molly Hartley looks to put her troubled past behind her with a fresh start at a new school, where she sparks with one of the most popular students. But can her secrets stay buried, especially as she learns more about the horrific truth that awaits her once she turns 18?
There was a twist at the end , with truth be told I did not see coming, but I should of done it was not very subtle.
As for the acting, I would say it is mediocre at best; no great performances from anybody that will save this film.

3/10

The Exorcism of Molly Hartley

Taking place years after The Haunting of Molly Hartley, who now, as an adult, has fallen under the possession of an evil spirit and must be exorcised by a fallen priest before the devil completely takes her.
The start is very exorcist, girl tied to a bed and the her and priest through the window and there is vomit.
This was a pretty decent film, the music made it feel creepy, there was a few bits I saw just blatantly borrowed shall we say from other film, but this did not take anything away form it.
This was much better than the first one.
My only fault was the ending very predictable and ripe for a 3rd film.

6/10

Haunting of Cell Block 11

Group of ghost hunters , go to an old Prison and the old long dead inmates predictability don't like it.
There is a twist but you would have to be blind and stupid not to see it coming a long way off.
A dreadful film, with bad acting and a terrible script.

1/10

The Haunting of Pauldy Son

A man is trapped within an abandoned video store, and is forced to watch an endless marathon of terrible Horror VHS's.

10/10

:D

The Martian - I thought it was very good adaptation of the book and a very good movie. The visuals were great, and Damon played Watney very well. I didn't even mide the parts in Earth, thought that they were alright.

However:
Jessica Chastain deciding to go in the end and catch Watney herself despite that Beck is better at it was so Hollywoodian. A needless and pointless change from the book. I guess that Hollywood needs a hero in every movie, even when it doesn't make sense.

All in all, a good and very enjoyable movie. 8/10

Basically everything you said @Revan I agree with, I really enjoyed it and it's a very well made entertaining movie. Even my wife who hates films set in space enjoyed it. They adapted the book very well keeping the tone and how it's altogether quite light hearted, and managed to take out some of the science stuff that maybe wouldn't have translated quite so well to the screen.

It lasts over 2 hours long and the rhythm of the film is great, you're never bored.

My only quibble with it is that I can't take Kristen Wiig or Donald Glover seriously, just wanted to laugh anytime they were on screen!

I only read the book recently. How close to the source material do they keep it?

The book actually felt like he intentionally wrote it in the perfect format for a blockbuster movie, too

Well, that is a first.

Very close. There is a pointless change (I put it in a spoiler in my review). That massive dust storm which happens during Watney's travelling is cut from the movie, but otherwise, it is around as same as in the book.
