Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Just got around to watching a few of this years movies.

Straight Outta Compton - 8/10
Thought it was absolutely brilliant, even if you don't like NWA. I myself dislike their music and early style of hiphop in general (even though I only listen to rap) and still found this very enjoyable. It was scary how much the actors look like the characters they're supposed to be playing, good acting too.

Avengers - 6.5/10
The story was a bit mental and the advancements in technology from the first one without much explanation was a bit much but it was an action packed hero movie.. exactly what you're paying so see I suppose. Not as good as the first one but I guess it was alright.

Southpaw - 8/10
Just finished it an hour ago and I'm impressed. I was expecting the typical Rocky type movie which some bits kinda were but the mix of how things can go so bad with courts/lawsuits in this day in age was spot on. Good but predictable ended but I still enjoyed it. Shout out to Jake Gyllenhaal too, I thought he was quality in this.

Watched The Martian today, a rare film which looked really good in 3D! Fun film with plenty of laughs. Felt like Castaway but on Mars.

On the negative side I felt very little connection to the characters and so felt quite hollow when there were any emotional scenes.

Overall an enjoyable film, 7/10.

Watched the new M. Night Shyamalan film, "The Visit" last night which I thoroughly enjoyed. Its a creepy thriller more than a horror even though what happens regarding the plot is pretty horrific. The two young actors are quite superb especially the boy.

Kingsman
Don't know why it took me so long to watch this but can say I utterly enjoyed it. Was brilliant throughout. Lots of great action, funny moments and just overall a pleasure to watch. Not one moment in the film felt boring. I even liked Colin Firth, who I normally can't stand. SLJ's lisp cracked me up everytime! Great film 9/10

Watched Hidden, a new survivalhorrorish movie. It was actually very good. Post-acopalyptic. A family that hides in a bunker from someone or something

Cold in July - It's all over the place, this one, but I thoroughly enjoyed it in a 'randon movie I just found on the internet' sort of way. Sam Shepard and Don Johnson are great, and the bloke from Dexter does a good job too. Fun movie!

Sicario
I was expecting a lot more from this film. It starts great and gets you hooked instantly, but I found there to be too many flaws in the storyline and I just couldn't get get into it like I'd hoped. Emily Blunt deserves credit though, she put in a fantastic performance.
6.5/10

The Martian

Very enjoyable film. Didn't expect to laugh as much as I did, there are several moments which are genuinely funny. Kind of believable storyline, but again with a lot of dramatic close calls which can be quite over the top. The film ends quite suddenly, they tried fitting too much in, but I never felt bored at any point. Worth a watch.
7.5/10

Well, did you?
I was so sad you hadn't even answered.

But yeah, I went. I was so surprised, I expected it to be a shitty little theatre with like 15 people there, and it was a really nice place with around 200 spectators for the showing.

It was brilliant, pretty intense but really enjoyed it. Superb cinematography and very interesting themes. Well worth taking my afternoon off.

Coool

I'd like to watch it on a big screen at some point. Such hypnotic viewing.

They're having a Tarkovsky season in London soon too - what's the big one to see? I've only watched Solaris before, so, disregarding that.

The Vatican Tapes.

Pretty run of the mill possession film, nothing different about this one, apart from the ending, very different from the normal possession film.
The acting was decent enough, Olivia Dudley who played the possessed girl was I thought outstanding.
There is a couple of bits that made me jump.
Not a classic but not the worst possession film I have seen.

5/10

The Chosen.

When a child-stealing demon attaches itself to a little girl, her family is thrust into a battle against time in order to save the girl and send the demon back to hell.
There was a decent film in there somewhere ,but this was not it, they missed a big chance with this.
To its credit, the setup for the premise is decent. It's a more unique twist of the usual possession plot.

3/10

Knock Knock

Keanu Reeves plays a husband and Dad who is left alone for the weekend, there is a knock at the door and 2 helpless girls are standing there in the rain.
The inevitable happens and he is made to play for it.
It is a dreadful film and one to be avoided.
Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas who play the 2 girls and nice to look at but just cant act.

2/10

Eli Roth can get in the bin.

I'd definitely recommend Stalker in any case, really interesting viewing and to echo what Nilssy was saying, seeing it on a big screen was great, it's aesthetically impressive.

Straight Outta Compton
Banging soundtrack, good performances and an enjoyable story. This film is really gripping and a great rollercoaster ride - if you don't know too much about the backstory. too many vital elements are left out and completely ignored. Seems like a film to massage ice Cube and Dr. Dre's egos. also, the actor playing Cube (his son I believe?) looked SO much like Cube that it seemed like Cube just printed him off of an old photo album. So I will knock some points off mainly due to the fact that it looks to tell a story about how rappers went against the odds and censorship to force a change, but the film itself seemed very censored in it's narrative 7/10

Stalker gets my vote for the big screen for the aesthetics alone. Think I might go re-watch it just to see it on the big screen.

I've tried and failed twice with Crime and Punishment, so not really!

It's good but somewhat overrated. And I speak as the esteemed author of Bicycle Clips and Trousers: How One Man coped with an out-of-control Rollercoaster.

 Not yet, chief.

he played the clown in Clown.

Crimson Peak - had heard mixed reviews but I loved it. Very camp, melodramatic. Terrific set design and costumes. Mia . Tom Hiddleston :drool::drool:.

Professional human impersonator Charlie Hunnam continued his noble quest across the uncanny valley. Keep on trucking lil buddy.

Beasts of No Nation

The first Netflix produced feature film so thought I'd give it Agu. It's pretty good actually, thought the first half was fantastic but it tailed off a bit after that. It shows the horrible life a young boy lives in a war torn African country and the acting by all is outstanding. Idris Elba is very good in his role as the commander but I was blown away by the kid playing Agu - best performance I've ever seen from a child.

It suffers from not having a particularly strong finish. Towards the end it started to become quite similar to The Thin Red Line - not a lot happening except poetic narration and nice shots of the scenery. The first half of the film combined with the terrific acting is what leaves it with a good score.

7.5

Burying the Ex: 1/10

Unless you are 13 and drag out watching a fit woman's cleavage despite the risible, unfunny plot, give this a miss. I managed about 15 mins before resorting to trolling in the CE forum. Far more entertaining. But less cleavage.

OK, he was good in Inglourious Bastards.
I thought he was too cartoony in IB and looked out of place.

Saw this this weekend and enjoyed it as well. Very classical gothic film with a pretty obvious storyline, but the acting and directing made it an enjoyable watch. The three main actors are all actors I like very much. Jessica

I think this is fair actually, I thought all the buildup until that scene where they attack that village was fantastic and it was shaping up to be one of the best war movies ever, but the last half hour was underwhelming. Actually, I liked the ending itself when they're in that place where Agu is learning to become human again, but all the stuff before that in the city with Idris Elba's and the chief's power struggles was a bit boring.

Still a very good film though.

And kudos for your introductory pun!

Legend - probably enjoyed this more than it deserved because it had been shat on enough. Was ok, framing it through Francis was a big mistake and Ronnie was a bit too silly from Old Mate Tom.

I enjoyed it more than Black Mass, @Mockney . Not necessarily better, but more entertaining because Hardy is better than Depp.

Ron was pretty mesmerising as well. I also forgot at times that they were the same guy.

Hamlet

Anyone else see this Cumberbatch cinema screening last week? He and Ciaran Hinds, as Claudius, were very good. It seemed as though some of the well known lines were cut, e.g neither a borrower nor a lender be, but it didn't affect the flow. Recommended, if it is shown again. I suspect the expansive production comes across better on the big screen than in the theatre.

Jaws 19:

After 19 attempts, you'd think they'd have managed to create a realistic looking shark by now! Like the original, the fake shark doesn't ruin the film but Still!
Max Spielberg does a pretty decent job of cranking up the tension and pulls off the odd jump scare quite successfully. Overall, it mirrors all the sequels in that it still doesn't match up to the original, however it's probably the best one that doesn't star Roy Scheider.
