Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I totally agree with this, it was one of the strong points of the film for me. Furiosa was a lovely character.

Don't agree with this though (and don't really understand why the dig at Nolan was necessary), not sure what 'deeper topics' you're referring to. Ecology? Place of the woman in society? I don't really feel those topics are dealt with in the film really, nor do I think Miller intended to.
I never said they dealt with them, just said touched upon. My point was more about how the messages were portrayed (Visually) rather then what happens in a lot of films nowadays where they explain to you every single theme of the film. Nolan is a sucker for it and its one of the reasons why I don't particularly love his films.

Off the the cinema on Friday. Should I go for Sicario or Legend? (Or is there anything else people would recommend?)
Sicario. Legend was average bar a great performance by Tom Hardy. From what I have heard Sicario is one of the best films of the year.

I'm gonna watch Sicario too soon, looking forward to it. The drug cartel phenomena allows for insane action scenes but I don't think Sicario is that action-packed according to reviews?

Yeah, agree with this. The final third of Interstellar was annoying enough as it is. All the exposition pushed that annoyance over the edge to the extent it completely ruined an otherwise ok film.

Although, to be fair, Thunder Road could get away without much exposition because it was set in a previously explored and well understood universe.

Ok, I see what you mean. What I did like with Mad Max and 'themes' if we're going to call them that was how the post apocalyptic environment was shown via its effects on the characters and society rather than explained in depth, which is what you're getting at as well, if I understand correctly.

Yeah, exactly. It was very much a visual cinema experience. The dialogue was really poor though; Especially from Furiosa at times.

Forgotten just how good Raid 2 is. I remembered it being an immense film and I think it was even better on 2nd viewing. The last third of the film is just immense, that Kitchen scene was just utterly brilliant.

I've only seen the first Raid film. That was very good IMO but haven't got round to seeing the second one.

Macbeth - Kurzel has made another great film after Snowtown. It's a slightly different take on the two main characters which was interesting and the leads are exceptional. Fassbender captures Macbeth's paranoia perfectly. Also I would say that it is one of the best looking films I have ever seen.

I am actually excited about that Assassins Creed film next year which has Fassbender, Cotillard, Kurzel and the same cinematographer. It could be the first great video game adaptation.

Sicario. Unless you're nostalgic for 1960s London, Legend's a bit crap.
Legend was meh. They spent way too much time on the least developed character and worst actor. Needed more Ron/Reg drama.
Tom Cruise is brilliant in Legend! Although I was hoping the unicorns would get killed at the end. Bloomin Unicorns! trollololol
I loved that film as a kid, ig oring all of the paedophilic undertones in the devil wanting to sex the 12 year old girl.

It was on film4 the other day so rewatched it (having only seen it once). The devil was played by Tim Curry! I did laugh at him picking up a sword and shield and then not using either for the rest of the film. :D

Those horns were ridiculously big. Obviously trying to make up for a lack of something else...

The last 20 minutes or so of that film is hands down the best action I have ever seen. Felt like I needed to lie down after watching it the first time. Outstanding movie.

Yeah it's very good. Kurzel and Arkapaw (DoP) went to uni together here in Melbourne, also with David Michod (Animal Kingdom, The Rover) and Amiel Courtin-Wilson. They run a production company with the Edgerton brothers. All very positive for Australian cinema.

Arkapaw is very talented. I hadn't realised he also worked on True Detective and Top of the Lake as well. He should definitely get an Oscar nomination this year.

I'm going to see it tonight, which reminds me...

Black Mass - a messy, not very interesting gangster tale. Probably something there in the hands of a better director. Depp looks like he's wearing a Halloween mask. Many terrific actors come and go with little to do. Adam Scott is basically just a prop for his moustache.

Better or worse than Legend? (if you've seen it)...Seeing as it was a similarly hyped gangster drama staring an A lister in a showy role that's not been that well recieved...By me, among many.

No one else seen The Martian?
Yeah I saw it 2 nights ago. Enjoyed it. A couple of decent chunks missing from the book but it doesnt hurt the film. Thought Matt Damon did a good job but wonder how the movie would have been with a new face?. I like Matt Damon generally but I have seen so many movies now that I dont really see the character but see Matt Damon. I am starting to wonder if we are getting to the point where some stories are better served being a netflix series so that you get 8 hours or so to fully tell the story and get all the nuances out. Didnt get any sense of real despair or utter loneliness out of the film, the book lacked that a bit too as the author was mostly interested in writing about the science and solutions to problems. Tom Hanks' Castaway movie hinted more at the mental state of things more than the Martian. Still thought it was a pretty good movie, enjoyed it.

Legend hasn't come out here so couldn't say. Black Mass is just a mess. Has no idea which character it wants you to be following or invested in and its supporting cast comes and goes with little explanation as to what happened to some of them. Bulger isn't particularly compelling either. It's not completely worthless though. Just very MoR.

I'd say that this is possibly more to do with Watney's upbeat personality. In the book IIRC he's most of the time pretty 'positive' about his situation and set on surviving which doesn't really leave a lot of time for him to be dwelling on it and being gloomy. Of course there are a couple of moments though...

As for the film being too science oriented. I think it was always going to be due to it being based purely on Mark's logs.

Beasts of No Nation

Wow. Saw at the LFF this evening, which included a cool Q+A with Cary Fukunaga, Uzodinma Iweala - writer of the original book, and Abraham Attah, the incredible child actor the film's centered around. Emotionally relentless film, which I'd recommend to anyone who wants to put themselves through the journey of a child solider losing his innocence. I'd compare it to 12 Years A Slave or Apocalypse Now, both in terms of the journeys involved, and the strange beauty it's directed with. At some parts in the middle (sadly mostly those with Idris Elba) I think it got a bit too carried away with style over substance, but the beginning and end more than make up for that. It's also probably the best child actor performance I've ever seen. Interestingly it's Netflix who bought the rights for the film (their first), which means anyone can watch it from this time next week. Do, but try to see it on the big screen if you can! 9/10

I also have the biggest man-crush on Fukunaga. Can't wait to see where his career goes from here.

It's wort a watch. The cast is good. He singled out the odd one but to be fair it's always weird to see comedic actors suddenly pop up in movies like that.

Black Mass has dangled between 7 and 8 from audience members and critics. That's a fair average.

I enjoyed it, although it was a bit overly cheesy towards the end. I've not read the book, although I intend to now.

Adam Scott wasn't odd because he's a comic actor. He was odd because he appears about a dozen times and probably says less than twenty words. The films been cut to shreds in the editing room, at least I hope it has.

He's a bit less than Kevin Bacon overall. There's one scene that has only bacon, one that has only Scott. Otherwise they were both there together. Don't think it was ever meant to be a much bigger role.

The film has been cut a lot. You can tell just by the uncredited scenes. Sienna Miller was for example completely cut out.

The Walk: There's a place in the world for Zemeckis cheesiness, and this could have been a reasonably charming and exhilarating film, but it's completely killed by the constant narration. Damn near every scene is explained as it happens by Joseph Gordon Levitt and his cartoon character French accent.
