Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Sicario:

This movie was fecking awesome. Think it really benefitted from being centered around a female lead. Josh Brolin plays the Machiavellian puppet master with a smug authority that I found delightful; and Benicio Del Toro is just bad to the mofo'ing bone. The action was some of the most taut, gripping and authentic I have seen in recent times, and I was genuinely never 100% sure what each character was truly capable of. One of the better films I have seen all year.

9/10

I agree, it's a very good movie (8 or 9 for me), the tension is incredible. I thought the first half was better than the second, which turned into a bit of a mess in my opinion.

@Gol123 , @Rooney in Paris : The Revenant has been already been leaked by some awful men ;)

No thanks. Rather watch it in cinema then on a laptop. It deserves that much for the effort in cinematography they put in.

I'd much rather see it in the cinema too (the Revenant). People always talk through movies in Malta though, it's annoying as feck. After seeing it I'd highly recommend waiting for the big screen as it's the most impressive cinematography I've ever seen.

Oh you live in Malta? One of my favourite holidays was there. The people were so friendly and was just a pleasant country all round

Really want to see this. Loved birdman.

Iñárritu is a mixed bag for me. Amores Perros was great. 21 grams was good. Babel was ok. Biutiful I wanted to like more than I actually did, mainly because of Javier Bardem who I think is amazing. But I found Birdman to be a horrible, steaming pile of insufferable shit. He's always had this artsy, fartsy pretentious air about his work, which was in danger of going overboard, and in Birdman it did. Couldn't stand it. Have high hopes for The Revenant, but for me (at least) I hope it's more like his earlier work.

I haven't seen any other film of his but birdman was one of the best I'd seen for awhile.

Opinions :)

I know, right!?! I never normally turn a film off, but I turned Birdman off after 25 mins. Just couldn't take it. Maybe I should give it another go. It's low on my list of obligations though.

For me, it struck a wonderful balance between enjoyable, gritty, and layered.

Agreed. Like when he reveals that he hears voices in his head that talk to him. It could come across as a daft plotline, but his ex-wife's response of finding it ridiculous kind of makes it perfect.

Norton is superb in it too.

My favorite scene was the one in the bar with the reviewer lady, after which he's pissed on the streets and the music kicks in.

Haven't seen Inarritu or Biutiful. Thought Birdman was ok, but thought the start was very slow. I probably wouldnt have kept watching had it not been for Keaton but in the end I quite enjoyed it. LOVED Amores Perros, thought 21 Grams was decent but absolutely hated Babel. Completely hated it.

Inarritu isn't a film, its the name of the director.

Wait what? I thought The Revenant was Nolan's latest film. How did I get them so mixed up? Is Nolan working on a film at the moment?

His next film is slated for 2017 release but no-one knows anything about it.

Otherwise, it was a great post.

Nolan needed a break.

Yeah, it's a temporary thing while I set-up a business here. I do like it, but it gets a bit boring after a while to be honest. Definitely more of a holiday destination.

Drug trade business?

I can spoil it for you: it'll be great, have some great performances, a nice score and a challenging scenario with some fairly explicable incoherences. The usual suspects on here will hate the film and spend their time dissecting plotholes. Probably

Yep, because big budget films always suck by default.

He's finished work on Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice where he is executive producer, but IMDB just have him writing and directing an "untitled Christopher Nolan Project" that is in the post production stage and is scheduled for release in 2017.

Ok, cheers. Will definately watch, I'm a big fan of his films.

To be fair, from reviews, this is essentially what The Revenant is.

Not a fan of Nolan's films at all. Only one I liked was The Dark Knight. I thought Inception and Interstellar were boring as feck.

If you enjoyed Rogue Nation (or even if you didn't) this Empire Podcast with Christopher McQuarrie is well worth your time. It's nearly 3 hours long, but it gives a great insight into what goes into making a huge summer blockbuster and a franchise film. I highly recommend it.

The Martian - 3/10
Thought this was complete trash actually. Had high expectations for it and watched it at the cinema stoned and man, just garbage. The humour was absolutely terrible, I mean at one point some guy was falling down and that shit was supposed to be funny? It felt like an Armageddon type movie but this isn't the 90s and the whole film was just, bleh. For the record I'd rather watch Armageddon again before this heap of crap and I've no idea why people like this film.

Sicario - 8/10
This one I liked, especially the first hour I thought was excellent. A bit weaker towards the end but still a really good movie.
