Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah that was very good.

There was an Argentinean film made a few years back, El secreto de sus ojos (think it one best foreign film oscar), which was apparently excellent. Have it on Bluray but haven't got round to watching it yet.
Finally got round to watching El secreto de sus ojos and it's absolutely excellent. Brilliant storyline, brilliant performances, just an overall excellent film. Much recommended for those who enjoy thrillers.

EDIT: reminded me a bit of Zodiac with the themes of obsession and time that goes by, which was great.

Amy Not an easy watch. A film that is far from a simple documentary that tracks Amy's complexity, talent and vulnerability but is overall an almost tender wake like recollection of her rise and fall with themes about family, fame, addiction and probably above all how people forget people when fame and fortune arise. It captures her amazing talent but also heartbreakingly shows how almost everyone who should have cared for her abandoned her in the chaos of her fame.

A huge but vulnerable talent utterly deserted by all who should have been looking after her. Apart from her childhood friends Tyler James and Andrew Norris (a bodyguard) are the only 2 who come out of this documentary with any credit. Heartbreaking stuff. 9/10

The ABCs of Death
Tried to watch this before but couldn't finish it. A really hit and miss (but mostly miss) anthology. There were a few good ones (D,L,Q and X) but the rest ver average to utter shit. F, G, H, M and Z were complete trash.

I read that all the directors were given $5000 dollars for their films and I want to know what TI West did with the money because his segment (M) was something that can easily have been done on $5 not $5000.

Q for me definitely stands out as the best of the lot. A smart idea and executed right. It was obvious that the director (Adam Wingard) is the best of the lot and you can see why he has gone on to do much bigger things.

Overall it gets 4/10

Ricki and the Flash Good cast and not a bad premise but it could have been so much more. The simplicity of the conclusion was a bit silly.4/10

Tom-Yum-Goong - I watched this Thai action movie last night and it was pretty ridiculous. An ancient tradition of elephant keeping for a village family goes awry when their prized elephant is kidnapped and taken to Sydney to be part of a Thai transsexual's gang operations. Yes. That is the basic premise. In a similar vein to the Raid (in terms of action) but not as good. The acting, storyline, and general 'feel' of the movie had me laughing more than anything. The action sequences are sublime though. There is a really cute baby elephant in this. So, with that in mind...

Other parts of the story: 4/10

Minnions Started this film on a plane. Pointless and unfunny. Stopped after about 20 mins.1/10

A Walk In The Woods A terrible buddy movie. Robert Redford is totally unconvincing as Bill Bryson and the whole thing is very pedestrian (pun not intended). I stopped watching after about 30 mins as I was bored senseless2/10

Zero Hour! (1957)

Somehow in all my wanderings through the cinematic jungle I've never encountered this gibbering monkey of a movie. It's the inspiration for Airplane. If you enjoyed the parody, you owe it to yourself to watch the original. It's a serious melodrama, and you'll laugh out loud. I guarantee it.

What are people's thoughts on The Raid? Gave it a go but switched off after 20mins. The bad dub might have had something to do with it - couldn't find it subbed.

I didn't like it. It's just 100% action without anything else. Rather watch a UFC event.

It's awesome. Puts Hollywood martial arts movies to shame. But watch it in its original language though with English subs, better than listening to awful dubs.

Absolutely love it. If you want to watch martial arts then you'll love it too.

The Raid 2 is even more brutal. It was the most intense cinematic experience I've had.

I don't know what to make of sci fi movies.

They Came Together.

Spoof rom-com starring Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler and every possible supporting actor you've ever seen in an American sitcom or on SNL in the last 10 years. It was basically a 90 minute SNL sketch making fun of romantic comedies. It probably had the intention of being closer to Naked Gun than Not Another Teen Movie, but it failed a bit. Numerous chortles, but the spoof element becomes more annoying as the film goes on. It had 1 star out of 5 on Netflix. That rating is about right. Quite funny, but not good. The Family Guy of movies.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

One of the most difficult films I've ever watched. The story is terrifying but in an all too real way, based on something that seems to be in the news every month. Despite this, I really enjoyed it, thought the performances were fantastic, especially Tilda Swinton. for those that have seen it, I really enjoyed the way they told the story, not in a chronological way but jumping about between past, present and future.

8/10

I need to rewatch it again, but it really is a surreal feast. Everything before he met Brando seems like a different movie, hard to describe but it's as if he's a ghost passing through the hillybillies of war and everything just stand still and feels very disconnected to him.

Might need to give this one a rewatch

The regular version is better. I have both but prefer the Thetrical version i saw when it first came out.

Creed

Been looking forward to this for a while, and I was disappointed. "They don't know what you've been through!' Says Rocky. Well what has he been through? Grew up without his dad? Well so do a 100 million other kids. Had a cushty office job, quit it to become a boxer, got trained by a legend and walked into a title shot completely undeservedly? Oh and somehow becoming probably the best pound for pounder in the world after a whole 6 months of professional training. K then.

There are only two fights in the film, yet the only outside drama is 'will his girlfriend forgive him for making a scene at her performance?' Oh she did. K then. This shit goes on for 2 hours. Conlan was right, he is an false Creed. I actually really wanted him to lose, despite the fact that Conlan was a wholly forgettable and unimposing antagonist. Oh and the ending was completely shit. 5/10

Some good, some bad, most somewhere in between.
I mean the films I consider Sci Fi. I don't really consider all films in space to be Sci Fi. I order them on the feeling of the film. The sort of films that make you feel oddly ambient and serene in a really disturbing kind of way whilst you watch it. And I don't know whether I like the feeling or not.

Kinda spoilt the plot for a lot of people there.

I watched Shyamalan's The Visit. I really liked the creepy, comic-toned middle and disliked the mawkish family reconciliation wrap-around. M.Night still seems to be a brilliant ideas man but still can't edit out the corny parts. A pretty good film over all but a lot of unfulfilled promise.

The best part was when the old man put the poo diaper in the kid's face.

I have seen it, agree with you review, good but could've been so much better.

Has anyone seen 'Room' yet? Thought it was brilliant but seeing mixed reviews so curious to see what others thought of it

The Last Horror Film.

A serial killer uses a horror video rental to lure his next victim. What begins as a teen slasher transforms into a disturbing journey through the mind of Max Parry, a mild mannered wedding photographer with a taste for human flesh.
A very strange and disturbing film, Max gives a running commentary throughout the film, there is plenty of killing in the film, some of it , no in fact most of it is pretty brutal, there is also some really stupid bits, one bit with a broken chair leg is daft beyond words.
I would recommend a fan of this sort of film watch it.

The bad thing about Tony Jaa is that he's showcasing his stellar abilities on low class thugs who serves as his punching bag. I remember when it last aired the crowds going crazy over beautiful acrobatic Muay Thay, including me. But movies got better, people want everything these days. The part where he slids against glass is very terrifying

PS: You should watch chocolate as well, it's a good fighting scene with a teenage girl (teenage what? I know I know, but trust me, she looks deadly for a kid her age)

Not yet. I'm downl .... erm ..... waiting for it to come out at the cinema right now.

Sicario:

This movie was fecking awesome. Think it really benefitted from being centered around a female lead. Josh Brolin plays the Machiavellian puppet master with a smug authority that I found delightful; and Benicio Del Toro is just bad to the mofo'ing bone. The action was some of the most taut, gripping and authentic I have seen in recent times, and I was genuinely never 100% sure what each character was truly capable of. One of the better films I have seen all year.
