Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Mad Max - The original with Mel Gibson. Set in a dystopic future, a police cop takes the law into his own hands following the destructive trail of a biker gang. I think the plane version was edited to feck as it was jumpy and a bit all over the place. A fairly good yarn with a limited budget, but so far removed from the 2015 version. It didn't help that I watched the 2015 movie first. Anyway, it was decent to good. 5.5/10

Man Up -
I usually avoid rom coms, but this was actually quite good. A woman 'steals' a blind date. There was definitely on screen chemistry between Pegg and Lane (I think that's her name), and the storyline took place over the course of a day. It was a good movie, charming and funny. 6.5/10

Pixels -
This is pretty shite. There was 1 maybe 2 moments that I found funny. At least that cnut Rob Schneider wasn't in this. I don't know what to say about this movie, apart from it being more shite served up by Adam Sandler's production company. Also stars Kevin James, and Josh Gad. 2/10

The second Mad Max is much better.

Krampus: The Reckoning

A not very good attempt at a horror, dreadful acting, dreadful script and a dreadful ending.
God knows why I stayed watching till the end, but somehow it just sucked me in.
The twist you see it coming all thought the films.

2/10

Has nobody seen Creed yet, no?
Saw it this evening. Didn't hink much of the premise when I first heard of it (which is only a few days ago), but actually really like it. If there only was Rocky I & II and this movie, it'd would've been in my top 3 of movie franchises I think.

A Christmas Horror Story

A bit different this one, 4 stories all told at the same time, held together by a aging radio DJ who is slowly get drunk played by William Shatner.
2 of the stories and OK 2 are just boring.
Santa fighting off Zombie Elf's was different and Krampus is part of the stories again
I quite liked this and was not that bad, the twist at the end I did not expect.

5/10

Beast of No Nation:

Wonderful performance from the child actor, and Idris Elba is the Apocalypse Now Colonel of our generation, it's amazing how he can act without taking the center stage from the child actor. Although it's harrowing to watch, to be honest.

It's not easy going. Totally agree with amol's take on it, some excellent stuff (mainly the acting), but the story is all over the place and overall it feels like a bit of a waste.
Yeah. Just felt like I was watching what should be a brilliant film but was somehow not.

The story is meant to be all over the place though.
The film has to pull of the balance between abstract/non linear and everything somewhat falling into place. I don't think IV did that, which resulted in it feeling sloppy and overly confusing at times.

Inside Out
Have heard all the hype so went in with the highest of expectations expecting to be let down but have to say this truly was a masterpiece by the folks over at Pixar. Loved the concept and story, laughed out loud many times and there were moments of absolute heartache. Loved every single minute of it 9.5/10

Goosebumps

If I was a 15 year old I would have loved this but as it is, it was ok. It felt like a bit of a montage of seeing all of the Goosebumps ghosts and monsters on the big screen as the story was too frantic and didn't really let you digest much. However, Jack Black was brilliant and overall it was quite enjoying 6.5/10

The Diabolical

A film about a single mother and her two children who are haunted by supernatural forces in their house. Had some cool story elements and tried to be different but the scares just all fell flat. None, and I mean none of the scare moments were even remotely frightening because the pacing was completely off. It's also a manual about how to be a really bad parent. Boring sums it up nicely 3/10

Mr. Jones

So the weekend started great with Inside Out, which is easily on my top films of the year list. The weekend finished in @pauldyson1uk territory with this steaming pile or donkey shit. A film about a couple who go into the woods and disturb the boundary between nightmares and real life. The final 15 minutes looked quite cool but the film tried too hard to break the genre tropes of found footage and ended up a complete mess 2/10

Wow that good, huh? Think I'll watch this tonight.

The Kingsman: James Bond meets Guardians of the Galaxy. As far as entertaining flicks go, I thought it was one of the better ones I've seen of late. Well put together, well acted and the church scene alone deserves a point. Didn't take itself too seriously and didn't have much redundancy. 8/10.

It's really great, one of the best films of the year, if not the best.

I saw Shyamalalalalalan's latest film recently, The Visit, it was quite good. The build up is quite good with some scary scenes and an ambiguity that remains throughout. One of the most shocking scenes I've seen in ages towards the end too. Nothing exceptional but an enjoyable watch.

Can't stop thinking of the film. I may be a little biased, being a huge Rocky and boxing-films fan, but it really is good movie and certainly would stand on itself without the previous movies. The two storylines of Rocky and Don are finely integrated to the bigger picture. But the bigger picture - the progression of his fighting career feels forced. But then again, who'd make the film if it was any different? Stallone is great in it. Made me dread and look forward to getting old at the same time. My eyes watered on 4-5 occassions.

When the Rocky theme started when the bell rang for the beginning of the last round gave me the chills! And I love the toned down use of the original theme in this.

8/10

Watched the The Diabolical last night, could've been so much better, but to be honest got bored with it towards the end and just did not care what happened.
Mr Jones, will give that a watch.

Bloody love it. It's original and just sheer fun right from the beginning.

The Night Before

A weirdly bad movie. Apart from very few laughs, most of the movie ranges from yawn worthy to cringe worthy. Even the 'feel good' moments don't feel good. Juvenile jokes. No coherent story or screenplay. Forgettable acting.

Don't even bother. 1/10

Fifi was hilarious, and that scene where one of the bikers is licking ice cream off the other's face.

You really have to see it first if you're gonna give it any cred in the Mad Max universe, and even then it's touch and go. I showed it to my gf before we went to see Fury Road. She very nearly refused to come to the cinema. It hasn't aged well.

Yes, The Departed was the last good crime/gangster movie I saw.

Haven't had much time for films of late. Best I've seen in the last couple of months;

Wall-E. Somehow let this pass me by despite all the acclaim it got. Wonderful film, in particular the opening, dialogue-free stretch, and all the 2001 references which I couldn't help but love. The world is such a better place for Pixar, can't wait to see Inside Out over the holidays.

Steve Jobs. Cheesy final five minutes, but pretty wonderful before then. If you like Sorkin you'll love it, if you don't then you won't.

Just watched Everest and Cartel Land.

Everest: A decent watch. Makes you think what the mountaineers are going through before their impeding death. But the movie as a whole did not capture the emotions as well as I'd have thought. Rating: 6.5/10

Cartel Land: Very Impressive. The way the Mexican cartel hold has been shown is quite excellent. A few gory images so viewers be warned but hard hitting. An Independent American Border patrol's point of view has also been shown. Shows the story of a Mexican Doctor and his organization which has risen in arms against the Drug cartels. A must watch I say. Rating: 8.5/10
