Celtic Appoint Ronny Deila As New Manager

They have to adopt like other smaller nations have, there's no point crying over your neighbours wealth. There are plenty of players to go around, even for teams in Scotland. Celtic should have every decent youngster on their books, training them to a high standard and bringing them through the ranks, instead they buy average players knowing that's all it's going to take to win the league. They won the European Cup by building a team from within their community, it's time they went back to basics. The same can be said for all the other clubs in Scotland.
That's all very admirable but it's not why the clubs in Scotland, Belgium, Sweden, Romania, the former Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria all struggle. Once upon a time all of those countries had a club or two which could compete for major European titles. But they haven't got a hope in hell any longer. And they've not just all stopped building from within. You can do all that you want but ultimately you'll get dicked over, not just by English Premier League sides, but even Championship and League One teams, in the financial resources you can call upon.

The Champions League is designed around ensuring the wealth stays with the biggest clubs in Europe. That's why it was conceived and why it is now largely a closed shop unless you can call upon hundreds of millions of oil money. It's not the likes of Celtic, Malmo or any other bottom-feeder who are at fault here.

This here is the core problem. Scotland were caught up and overtaken with respect to the depth of quality of players being produced 25 or 30 years ago. The coaching systems of junior and youth players had fallen behind what many nations were doing. In the last 3-5 years many of those coaching issues have been looked at but at best Scotlands coaching systems have merely been playing catchup. Right now the National team is punching far above its weight considering the player quality available and I just cant see Scotland ever getting back to being a truly strong international side. Celtic and its money are not the problem. (I hate Celtic btw)
Well exactly. We got away with player development until the 1980s because we had kids playing all night long on the street and elsewhere the development process in many other countries was still emerging. The demise of street football and other countries better organising their youth football has hamstrung our game over the last 20 years.

The lack of competition in Scotland is what has ruined it if you ask me. Even before Rangers started having problems the gap between them/Celtic and the rest of the league has always been huge. The likes of Hearts/Hibs had the players to improve the league over the years but were then poached by Celtic/Rangers.

These problems that Celtic fans are now complaining about are the same one's that the smaller teams in Scotland have had to put up with for years.

The demise of street football was at the root of the problem but what we didnt do and other countries did do was compensate for the demise of street football with quality coaching systems and methods. I learned to play via street football in the 60's and 70's but if I had learned to play via the systems now in place I would have become a far better player.

Over the last 25 years, the best seasons in Scotland have always been when other teams have been able to mount a challenge (Aberdeen in 1991, Motherwell/Aberdeen in 1994, Hearts in 1998 and 2006). In the interests of competitiveness, we need to do a better job of supporting these teams to build and compete at the top end.

Aye, through the 1990s we expected the same results despite the fact the society had changed.

We also have a league system where the bottom of the heap is falsely sustained by TV money. League 2 for example operates with crowds of anywhere between 300-700 a week attending games and players being paid. We would be better served taking the money out of that, making it an amateur league and investing it in junior coaching. The single best thing that could happen for competitiveness would be building depth in player quality and in the modern game that has to be done with quality coaching and systems.

Yep just they have been few and far between. Teams seem more able to get results against Celtic now but only as there own standards have dropped. I'd love to see a strong league with Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen etc all competing. Think that is what is needed for teams to really push on in Europe. As it is the step up in class is too much for Scottish teams not used to playing at that level.

Outplayed by the 10 men of Aberdeen. Aberdeen lead by 2 points and have a game in hand as well. Celtic will probably still walk the league but these are alarming signs for Ronny.

I watched the game, outplayed is an exageration. I am an Aberdeen fan and it was an important win but we didnt outplay them.

Who's idea was it to buy half of Dundee United?

Pathetic performance tonight. Can't see him lasting too much longer.

It relates to an earlier conversation and is a bit Kate but I have to laugh at the notion that we should feel empathy for poor Celtic's situation because the big boys in Europe won't let them play. Celtic and Rangers have been doing that to every other Scottish team throughout their history.

Kris Commons seems like a dick.

The Celtic squad is terrible, not entirely sure what Delia is really meant to do? They sell their best players and buy some terrible no names.

Another piss poor display in Europe. Fans want him gone.

He got a bit shirty in his interview with the reporter..

Reporter asked him where does Celtic/you personally go from here? he replies "Where do we go? Forward, all the time forward so thats a very stupid question.." and then got asked another question.. "You ask me the same questions everyday.. am I going to do this, that.. This makes me so unbelievably angry."

Celtic will be going to Fenerbahce to play for some semblance of pride, whether he'll be joining them is a different matter. I've only seen them in the Europa League this season but they've been terrible from the bits I've watched.

Not a massive fan of Deila but to be fair to him he is working with a couple of cnuts.

Deila commented on the unprofessional behaviour for plenty of the players when he first arrived, and it's been showing for the last month or so.

Stokes is a wank. No appreciation for the fans who ploughed up the A9 through the snow to watch Celtic. Not that I give a flying feck about their fans to be fair.

Dead man walking. Getting absolutely roasted by some guy in the Sky studio.

Andy Walker completely tore into him. He was spot on, though.

If anyone has the Andy Walker clip whenever it gets uploaded, share it please :)

Shit manager
Shit club
Would love to see Aberdeen win the league!

If only every club was blessed with the financial doping English clubs enjoy. Where fecking second and third tier mobs can spend millions on a player without blinking. Maybe then there'd be less "shit clubs".

Whiny little prick is Walker.

Celtic were lucky the ref and his assistants were obviously blind. First time I've seen a ref actually look straight at a stamp and give a yellow, and then not to give a penalty

They'll probably still win it. Even this window they've just went and bought another player for much more money that what the rest of the teams in league have spent together.

I had the misfortune of seeing them play Ross County at the weekend. The quality is shocking. Reminded me a bit of the World cup for women in the summer.

Things like this annoy me this to be honest. Not sure what you expect when even no mark football clubs in England can spend millions on players.

Money can be used as an excuse for why they are not competing in Europe but considering this is meant to be the top league in Scotland it's infuriating to see standards so low. I've watched a lot of Scottish football over the years and yes i'd agree things are tough for the league at the moment.

At the same time though with the money top Scottish clubs have pissed away on average players over the years maybe if they put it into developing the young Scottish players, improving facilities and coaching it wouldn't still be where it is.

Celtic and Rangers have for years cherry picked the best young Scottish players from other clubs in the league reducing the chances of having a competitive league. It's quite funny now to see there fans complaining that the English have all the money stopping them being competitive.

Aberdeen paid their first transfer fee in seven years when getting in McLean. Any of the other teams outside Celtic and Rangers have barely bought either. To say that they've been pissing away money as well is not true.

It's all well and good saying that you should invest in youth, but again with the money in England any player with promise will earn far more even in League 1. Aberdeen lost Ryan Fraser to Bournemouth who were well away from the top divison. Jack Grimmer left at 17 to move down south. There are countless other players too, and that's a reason why a lot of the talent stagnates. They could be playing every week in Scotland but end up playing age group football instead, and it's all down to money.

Sorry when I said top Scottish clubs I meant Rangers and Celtic. I've got sympathy with the clubs outside of them as they never had the money to put away or build for the future but are still guilty to some extent of putting there money into average foreign players than improving there own.

The standard of players Scotland is producing isn't high enough and when the money dried up that's all they really have to work with. Even if they leave Scotland they bring in money to the clubs or should and it improves the Scottish game overall. As I said when you watch two of the top 4 teams in Scotland and standards are so low it's an indication to me things have not got any better.

For me the only way out of this mess for Scotland is to start putting money into facilities for kids and proper coaching not just whoevers dad wants to play football manager. The technique level in England has improved massively over the last few years but in Scotland the standards are getting worse if anything. That can't just be down to lack of money for signings.
