Antonio Conte | Chelsea Manager 16/17

Am I the only one who thinks he's got a lot to prove? Did well at Juve but very little competition when he was there due. Or was he so good and that's why there wasn't any competition?
He did excellent at Brescia I think before, playing a 4-2-4. Juve also weren't doing great before he came in and gave them structure. Apparently he was an excellent motivator. A load of diva's at Chelsea is different though. He was a legend at Juve and the dressing room leaders like Buffon, Marchisio, Pirlo and Chiellini already highly respected him.

Hope he plays the 3-5-2. Maybe we'll see some success with it after Vangles and Bob Mancs tarnishing of its reputation.

Yeah very true. Mancini tried it in the 12/13 season and Rodgers tried it at Liverpool for a while to get Suarez and Sturridge playing together up front. We all know about Van Gaal's attempts to play 3-5-2 as well. It never ended well and usually leads to a lot of square pegs in round holes.

3-5-2 only works if you have specialists in every position. Like most formations. Juve were/are suited to a 3-5-2 as they have 3 of the best centre backs around, all of whom are excellent on the ball (particularly Bonucci) and Asamoah and Lichsteiner are very much suited to play as wing backs. At the moment, Conte often plays 4 at the back with Italy, with Darmian and De Sciglio as full backs. Regardless, Chelsea have no players that are suited to playing as wing backs, except maybe Willian, and none of their CB's are very good on the ball.

Hope not. Hes the dark horse in the manager stakes and I think could do very well. Wouldnt be against him coming here at all.

He's stubborn and tactically limited. Waits too long to make changes when the opposition are starting to take control.

His best attribute is how he motivates the players. Every game is a war for him and he will make the team spit blood by the end of the match.

I don't see him lasting 3 years at Chelsea unless tactically he has improved since his time with us.

He also is a guy who says it how he sees it which made him clash a few times with the board.

I think the most he will last is 2 seasons at Chelsea but I think he is the sort of coach the players need as he won't let any divas near the football pitch and will really improve the team morale and character.

They never muck about do they? Just get their new manager sorted without the newspaper circus.
It has something to do with a replacement after Sir Alex Fergusons's 27 year reign.. a lot of expectation, also you read much more about your own team than others

It would be interesting to see his philosophy implemented in Chelsea.
He will need to buy specific players to use 352.
Ifor we sign Mourinho, I prefer to see Simeone managing Chelsea.

Can't claim to know all that much about him but I do know that he did a great job at Juve, and really (re) turned them into a real force. With someone staying put, Conte is probably one of the most promising managers out there in terms of recent achievements.

Merged. Hopefully waiting until August will screw up their transfer business.

Unlike us, Chelsea's transfer dealings are independent of the manager. What it will mess up is their preseason

In terms of tactics and instructions, yes August is very late. But I think Steve Holland is good enough to manage the team for the summer. We might have some trouble getting going early on and I'm not sure Conte will have the luxury of a honeymoon period, he'll be right in the thick of it -- teams will also aim to take points off of us by exploiting this.

Yep. Was the same with LVG for you lot wasn't it?
Couldn't say 100% but I would expect so. Kinda silly to think the teams would just be fecking around with whatever until he arrives.

I'm sure along with Chelsea's usual transfer situation, he'll have mentioned any key players he believes he needs.

Dayum! If we get Mou, what a collection of managers managing in the Premier League next year!

Reading what he said to Gigi,if true and he pulls something similar with Chelsea squad,he wont last more then few months.

His hair transplant is a better job than Klopp's.

Issue is though the Premier League is full of very good managers.

He started with a 4-2-4 at Juve before switching to 4-3-3 and then eventually sticking with 3-5-2. His Italy team have mainly used either 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 and haven't lost a competitive game since he took charge, finishing top of their Euro qualification group (which included Croatia).

He's brilliant tactically and amazingly adaptable during games. Pirlo and Buffon also love him:

Pirlo

"I am extremely lucky I met Antonio Conte, I had so many coaches to compare him too, and he is the one who surprised me the most. I was expecting a good coach, but not that good.

I thought he was a coach with a lot of grit and charisma; instead, I discovered that tactically and technically he has a lot to teach many of his colleagues … he makes us play matches with 11 against zero, urging us to repeat the same moves for 45 minutes until we get it right. That's why we win 11 against 11."

Buffon

"The secret of our success is the ambition our coach has. Conte has brought a new mentality to the club. He has pushed us to sweat, to find strength and to undergo hard work in order to cancel out the last two disappointing campaigns."

Despite all the Buffon love, Conte doesn't take any nonsense from his players:

Italian journalist Alessandro Alciato, who co-wrote Andrea Pirlo's autobiography, recalls a story around the time Conte was pushing his side to break the league record for points in a season.

When Juventus goalkeeper and club legend Gianluigi Buffon interupted the team meeting to discuss player bonuses, Conte "lost his rag."

"Shut the f*** up Gigi, What the f*** are you saying? Don’t say a word. I don’t want to see you anymore, get out of here! I would never have expected it from you, you don’t know s*** Gigi, you are the captain, you are a disappointment to me as well as all these idiots."

The 11 vs 0 stuff... Evra talked about it, Queiroz had it too and Scholes was said to hate it. So he wouldn't love it but I can see what it means. It could lead to perfect cohesion within the group if they can make full abstraction of the opposition and just play instinctively as if the opposition doesn't exist.

pretty certain that the guy in the thread title won't ever become Chelsea's next manager

It's hard to see Conte coming out on top against Mourinho or Pep :nervous:
Have a bit of faith in the guy FFS. What he did at Juventus was pretty incredible and he has flourished wherever he has gone.

Why August though? Why so late?

Maybe the Italian FA won't let him out of his contract before August 1st? The Euro final is played on July 10th. In theory, it should be possible to solve the issue, so that he starts working earlier and doesn't sit around doing nothing for at least 3 weeks.

Madness. Hopefully it doesn't feck pre season up too much though. We cannot afford to have another train wreck of a preseason.

He's a top manager, exactly the kind of character arsenal should have got to replace Wenger.

Hope and believe he will do a complete clear out in the summer.

Oscar needs to go. Stealing a living.
Cahill is crap.
Mikel is crap.
Matic is crap.
Baba is crap.

And those are bare minimum.

Also, Loftus-Cheek needs some tough love from Chelsea. Absolutely awful how lazy he is.

What are you on about?
Baba, Matic, Cahill and Mikel have been great. Do you think we well be able to attract world class talent without CL games  ?

What? Matic has been crap for at least a year now. Absolutely awful. Mikel is nothing but a stop gap and will slowly fall back into his lazy mediocrity once more and Baba is honestly the worst defensive player Chelsea have ever had. He hasn't had a single good full 90 minutes for Chelsea.

Nice and well.
However what will happen is

Costa will leave
Hazard will leave
Courtois will leave
Terry will leave

Why do you think Courtois will leave? And where to?

There is some talk of that (coming mostly from Chelsea fans channel on yt). Apparently his father said that he needs to be playing cl every season or someting on those lines a few months back. He has 4 years on his contract so its unlikely to be a negotiating tactic either.

Real will surely need a better keeper now that De Gea has extended his contract.

If this honestly happens I wouldn't be too fussed. None of our players are great IMO and their attitude stinks.

If it does go down (and it looks all but done), Conte will still time to come terms with the EPL. And this ain't no vintage Chelsea side his inheriting.

Agree on Hazard and probably fine with Costa leaving too. Hazard is so wasteful, ruined a couple of 3-on-2s in the game today trying to dribble past rather than passing in acres of space. Always had this flaw in his game but now he seems at poor at everyting else too.

That said, we must keep Terry and maybe get rid of cahill instead.

In summary, the players I would like to see gone at the end of the season - Costa, Remy, Pedro, Oscar, Hazard, Mikel and Cahill.

Agreed. Would add a few more in there too if I'm honest though. Costa will be kept though because we cant replace him realistically without CL football. Fabrehas may go though as he is easier to replace. Baba should go too.
