Regarding the league invincible Arsenal, it's the matter of opinion. IMO yes they're very good that season. 90 points, scored most goals and conceded least goal too. The league invincible Arsenal was also among the favorite to win the CL that year if not for Chelsea. Chelsea became top favorite by most of betting companies, IIRC going into the semi final round. Arsenal were that strong back then. In League Cup and FA Cup, it took the eventual winners that year to take Arsenal out!The level was raised after Arsenal's invincibles? I don't think so, and that's from a Spurs fan.
The point tally reflects nothing other what was required in any given season. Leicester could possibly have won the league with 71 points, does that indicate a strong league from top to bottom or a weak one?
After this 03-04 season, the trend was: winners consistently finished season with more than 85 points (with many season closer to the 90 point region). Couple outliers are 10-11 and this year. Before 03-04 Arsenal, for nearly a decade since the start of 38 games per team per season, there were only 2 occasions the league winners finished above 85 point mark (99-00 and 01-02. Unless you want to make a zig zag trend, which ended in 04-05). Therefore, it was 03-04 Arsenal who started the 85+ point winner trend.
The following season Arsenal was very good too. They only dropped off after their undefeated streak being stopped, but that required Mou's ultra consistent Chelsea to top them (Chelsea lost only 1 game while having more win than even league invincible Arsenal the previous seasons). Arsenal finished 83 points only 7 less than the previous season!
This argument does not work. In reality, Leceister showed consistency and has always been on the way to past the 80 point mark to be able to win the league. Spurs being psyched to make many mistake and slipped since the West Brom game. If Leicester was hanging around 70 points mark, then Spurs, City, Arsenal would have put more effort and made less mistakes and could have been favored to overcome Leceister on the last match day. At the moment Spurs still has the possibility to end up with 73 points; Arsenal 71 points; City could have done better vs Southampton if they were still in the title race. Imagine the pressure Leicester would have faced, going into the final game against Chelsea with the possibility of finishing the season at only 71 point max. That alone defeats this argument that Leicester could have crawled over the line and won the league with only 71 points.
