Cristiano Ronaldo - Performances (wums will be thread banned)

He was always going to have a game where he scored a couple, wasn't going to continue missing chances.

How many EC did Platini play? This is Ronaldo's 4th already

edit: Platini scored 9 goals at 1984's Euro

Yeah, he was the main reason why we didn't win the semi final against them. We were very good but he was amazing.

Good performance today, unlucky that two goals for Hungary were deflections.

Lucky they qualified really based on finishing third, but be interesting to see where Portugal go in the next game.

Good to see that enormous prick Platini knocked off the top of that list. Here's hoping Ronaldo bags a couple of goals to take the top of the scoring charts too.

Being Ronaldo has to be pretty terrible. Imagine spending your club career playing in the same team as Pepe, who is just the worst player and person ever, and then when he wants to spend his summer kicking a ball around with his national team fecking Pepe is there to stink the place out again.

Today's game also saw him break the all-time appearance record in the Euros (surpassing Van der Sar and Thuram) with 17 games.
And he's 1 assist away from matching Figo's Portugal NT record of 5 assists at the Euros. (I would guess that Poborský holds the overall assists record with 6?)

@FC Ronaldo

He refused to answer any questions from the press after the game

Bless him, he's really on edge these days.

Told you that he's hitting good form. If Portugal beat Croatia can see them reaching the final.

Is this a serious post? Portugal haven't won a game yet, and played teams they should be breezing past. And to top it off just barely limped through the group with a 3-3 draw with the mighty Hungarians.

Portugal really lucked out with that Island goal, ending up on the other side of the bracket from most of the big guns. They've been terrible, but it's really not beyond them to go on a run and reach the final. I'd have Croatia as their biggest hurdle, though, and Belgium will obviously be a tough nut to crack if they meet.

With Messi turning it on in the Copa America, would anyone really be surprised if Ronaldo suddenly did the same in the Euros now? I wouldn't :)

I thought his pass for Nani's goal was superb and both goals he scored were really good quality.

I remember a world cup a long time ago where Italy couldnt score and just snuck out of their group into the knock out rounds. Everyone and I mean everyone discounted them as a possible winner but they ended up doing just that. Paulo Rossi became an Italian superstar after that WC.

Just imagine this - they would be out if the tournament was played with top 2 qualifying. What a mess!

Doesn't happen often though does it? I wish i knew you in person so we could place a bet! easy money!

Sure, its easy money but it has happened before. You cant say for certain they cant make it to the final, unlikely but it is possible. Just thought your mocking tone was a bit arrogant.

Could happen but most likely won't, not being arrogant my assessment is based on watching a poor Portugal team over the last 3 games, if they showed more i would be more optimistic for them.

I wrote IF. If Portugal manage to beat Croatia, which is not very likely as things stand but is far from impossible, then they can beat also Belgium, Poland, etc.

Portugal were very unlucky not to win vs Austria, they had a very good game and were good to watch. They were a bit unlucky vs Hungary too, it is very rare for a team to concede 2 deflected goals over 10 min.

@FC Ronaldo

Just caught this, cheers for the tag

he scored 2 against Austria after 2 average performances against poor teams, very good goals but let's have some perspective.

Croatia on Saturday will be the acid test for Portugal - if he can take this tournament by the scruff of the neck. Modric might have something to say though.

Just to clarify:

There has come to light some new information about why Ronaldo threw that mic into the lake. It's the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet who is reporting it but the gist of it is:

The reporter was from CMTV who has a long running feud with Ronaldo

- They have claimed he is gay
- They have written about girl/boyfriends that does not exist
- They have falsly claimed that he has other children with ex-girlfriends

Portugal didn't luck out at all facing Croatia. Croatia is one of the favorties to win the Euros...

The Croatian defence isn't exactly impressive.

Croatia are definitely the favourites from their side of the draw based on form. If Portugal can squeeze passed them you have to say they have a great chance to go far. Can't see it happening myself but it's a huge game for both.

I like how he initiated the counter and got the assist to the goal and everything, but he was having a shocking display to be honest. First game where he was really a passenger and couldn't really get into the game.

Nevertheless he played a part in getting his team to the quarter finals, and that is what matters most.

PS did you guys know he is 31, this whole time I thought he was 28 or thereabout. Age really is just a number.

Is that considered an assist?

Is that considered an assist?

Yes, as is drawing a free kick or penalty. I would assume UEFA uses the same scoring system as FIFA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assist_(football)
  1. An assist was awarded to the player who had given the last pass to the goalscorer.
  2. In addition, also the last but two holder of the ball could get an assist provided that his action had decisive importance for the goal.
  3. After goals from rebounds those players were awarded an assist who had shot on target.
  4. After goals scored on penalty or by a directly converted free-kick the fouled player received a point.
  5. In case that the goalscorer had laid on the goal for himself (dribble, solo run), no assists were awarded.
  6. No assists were awarded, either, if the goalscorer took advantage of a missed pass by an opponent.
The 1990 World Cup technical report adopted similar criteria, but changed the free-kick/penalty criterion:[2]
  • Where goals resulting from penalties are concerned, the player who is fouled in the area receives an assist point (unless, that is, the player who is fouled subsequently executes the penalty himself).
