PREVIEW: MANCHESTER CITY V MANCHESTER UNITED
Match details: This mouth-watering friendly against local neighbours Manchester City will kick off at the Beijing National Stadium on Monday at 12:30 BST. The match will be shown exclusively live on MUTV and fans can also follow it via ManUtd.com’s live blog, or our Twitter account @ManUtd.
Setting the scene: Although the Manchester derby does not require added hype, the first-ever meeting between United and City on international soil has got everyone excited. There’s also the small matter of Jose Mourinho reigniting his famous rivalry with new Blues manager Pep Guardiola, an old sparring partner from La Liga following their time in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. Expect this pre-season ‘friendly’ to attract the attention of the world.
Sub-plots: Although United are the designated away team in this fixture, the players will wear the club's new adidas 2016/17 home kit for the first time since it was officially launched on Saturday.
Team news: Mourinho plans to change his team and trial different combinations of players throughout Tour 2016, presented by Aon, so expect to see a different starting XI to the one that began against Borussia Dortmund. Four players - Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata - all played full matches against the Germans and they could be rotated against the Blues. Interestingly, Marcus Rashford stepped off the bench in Shanghai after the manager had previously said he wouldn't feature on tour.
City's last match: Guardiola returned to his former club Bayern Munich last Wednesday night and watched his Blues lose 1-0 at the Allianz Arena. The Catalan did field a youthful squad, in fairness, that only included seven senior players. They started the game as follows: Caballero, Adarabioyo, Angelino, Fernandinho, Barker, Navas, Maffeo, Kolarov, Fernando, Zinchenko, Iheanacho.
A word from City: "The boys are switched on and eager to impress the new manager – we’re all really enjoying our football.” - Fabian Delph
View from United: “City is our rival and it is very important for us. Since I have been at Man United I have won more games against them than I have lost. That is important for our fans.” - Ander Herrera
Opposition manager: Guardiola is regarded as one of football’s finest bosses after his all-conquering Barcelona team lifted 14 major trophies during his four seasons at Camp Nou. That collection includes two Champions Leagues, which were secured with victories over United in the 2009 and 2011 finals, although the trophy notably eluded him throughout his following three years at Bayern Munich. Now, he has taken on his biggest challenge yet by working in England and questions will be asked of him. The best, and most clichéd, is can he do it on a wet Tuesday night in Stoke?
Who's their star man? Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne are undoubtedly City’s primary attacking weapons, having scored 45 goals between them last term, but neither of them will feature in this match due to their international exploits at the Copa America and Euro 2016. In their absence, the Blues may look to Nigerian hotshot striker Kelechi Iheanacho after he notched 14 goals in his first campaign with the seniors in 2015/16. This could be his best opportunity to impress Guardiola.
Previous meetings: Where to start? Well, historically, United have the upper hand from 171 competitive games against City with 71 wins compared to their 49. One of those was memorably secured in the last outing, at the Etihad Stadium in March, when Rashford notched a first-half winner. This next meeting may only be a friendly, but it still means an awful lot to all involved.
Match in three words: Old rivalries renewed.
