PREVIEW: MANCHESTER CITY V MANCHESTER UNITED

Match details:
This mouth-watering friendly against local neighbours Manchester City will kick off at the Beijing National Stadium on Monday at 12:30 BST. The match will be shown exclusively live on MUTV and fans can also follow it via ManUtd.com’s live blog, or our Twitter account @ManUtd.

Setting the scene: Although the Manchester derby does not require added hype, the first-ever meeting between United and City on international soil has got everyone excited. There’s also the small matter of Jose Mourinho reigniting his famous rivalry with new Blues manager Pep Guardiola, an old sparring partner from La Liga following their time in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. Expect this pre-season ‘friendly’ to attract the attention of the world.

Sub-plots: Although United are the designated away team in this fixture, the players will wear the club's new adidas 2016/17 home kit for the first time since it was officially launched on Saturday.

Team news: Mourinho plans to change his team and trial different combinations of players throughout Tour 2016, presented by Aon, so expect to see a different starting XI to the one that began against Borussia Dortmund. Four players - Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata - all played full matches against the Germans and they could be rotated against the Blues. Interestingly, Marcus Rashford stepped off the bench in Shanghai after the manager had previously said he wouldn't feature on tour.

City's last match: Guardiola returned to his former club Bayern Munich last Wednesday night and watched his Blues lose 1-0 at the Allianz Arena. The Catalan did field a youthful squad, in fairness, that only included seven senior players. They started the game as follows: Caballero, Adarabioyo, Angelino, Fernandinho, Barker, Navas, Maffeo, Kolarov, Fernando, Zinchenko, Iheanacho.

A word from City: "The boys are switched on and eager to impress the new manager – we’re all really enjoying our football.” - Fabian Delph

View from United: “City is our rival and it is very important for us. Since I have been at Man United I have won more games against them than I have lost. That is important for our fans.” - Ander Herrera

Opposition manager: Guardiola is regarded as one of football’s finest bosses after his all-conquering Barcelona team lifted 14 major trophies during his four seasons at Camp Nou. That collection includes two Champions Leagues, which were secured with victories over United in the 2009 and 2011 finals, although the trophy notably eluded him throughout his following three years at Bayern Munich. Now, he has taken on his biggest challenge yet by working in England and questions will be asked of him. The best, and most clichéd, is can he do it on a wet Tuesday night in Stoke?

Who's their star man? Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne are undoubtedly City’s primary attacking weapons, having scored 45 goals between them last term, but neither of them will feature in this match due to their international exploits at the Copa America and Euro 2016. In their absence, the Blues may look to Nigerian hotshot striker Kelechi Iheanacho after he notched 14 goals in his first campaign with the seniors in 2015/16. This could be his best opportunity to impress Guardiola.

Previous meetings: Where to start? Well, historically, United have the upper hand from 171 competitive games against City with 71 wins compared to their 49. One of those was memorably secured in the last outing, at the Etihad Stadium in March, when Rashford notched a first-half winner. This next meeting may only be a friendly, but it still means an awful lot to all involved.

Match in three words: Old rivalries renewed.

If this goes ahead, after what Jose said regarding recovery from Dortmund game, I think we’ll see all English Euro players because the guys who played 90mins on Friday won’t play tomorrow, that’s my educated guess.

1st half:

Romero

TFM—Tuanzebe—Jones—Rojo

Carrick—Pereira

Januzaj—Rooney—Young

Rashford

2nd half:

De Gea (60mins->)

Valencia (75)—Smalling (60)—McNair (45)—Tuanzebe

Blind (45)—Pereira

Lingard (45)—Mkhitaryan (45)—Januzaj

Keane (60)

I actually hope this one is cancelled. You can't play rival teams like Manchester City and Liverpool in a friendly, it somehow takes the thrill out of it, especially now when it will be the first game between Mourinho and Guardiola at their new clubs.

But at the same time, the most important thing at this point is to get 90 minutes of football in your legs, I guess.

Jose's press conference in about 7 mins.

Press Conference notes

Starting now instead. Doing press conference outdoors because it was hot inside. MouMou unhappy with the conditions of the pitch, don't care about results in pre-season.

Looks like MouMou would rather be off playing Pokémon Go. Went on about shaking Guardiola's hand for almost a minute.

'Friendly becomes a double-friendly. No injuries, play calm, go home.'

Repeated that he didn't want any injuries. Must've seen Jones' injury record.

Now asked about Brexit, said 'he's not a politician'.

"Are you happy about Portugal's Euro win?" JM: 'That's another brilliant question. Are you expecting me to say I'm unhappy about it?'

Fly all the way to China to ask if Jose will shake Peps hand....

Another journalist asking about brexit

Post-Conference MUTV Interview

On China: 'last day, last match, and then we can go home to train in good condition where the players feel good, feel safe and bring the intensity when we get home.'

On Conditions: 'The conditions for the training session are not the best, but we can control it by doing very little. In a match it's more difficult. So I hope everyone goes home without any injury to the start the competitive period well'

On what he expects from game: [Because of conditions] '[I can hope for] emotional balance. I cannot ask anything for a high performance level. I hope they keep calm, and not let their motivation go down, and go home safely. Then we train at home and play two more games.'

On Manchester Derby as a friendly: 'City against United for me is Old Trafford / Etihad or even cup final at Wembley  It was a friendly before we knew the conditions, and now it's maybe more of a double-friendly.'

On PL: 'Without any doubt 6 or 7 teams will fight for the title. Without any doubt all 20 teams will fight for every point. The Premier League is special.'

Having watched the Dortmund game I'm not expecting too much against City, although I think there's a chance José will set up to win against Pep rather than just experiment and assess.

Quick question.

Did Jose say the team travelled in two different planes and that just one of them had to do an emergency landing? Watched the press conference while doing something else and just wanted to make sure that I didn't get anything wrong.

Thanks!

Match day thread will explode if we lose even though its just a preseason game.
We should let go of that preseason myth though.

9/5 is great odds for United, IMO.

6/7 will fight for the title, lmao.:lol::lol:

I hope this is cancelled if the conditions do not improve dramatically. I do not want any of our players to pick up an injury just to appease a few sponsors and fans. I'd especially keep away Jones, Smalling, Carrick and Shaw.

True, but nothing else to bet on at the moment. Be crazy to place high stakes on friendlies, couple of quid etc on an accum is fine.

Couple of cricket matches and baseball. Have you tried daily fantasy sports?

From what i have read about conditions and the pitch. The match result means nothing. Getting players though uninjured is tge main priority.

Yeah just saw Jose’s interview and some footage of the pitch. Will be interesting to see what we do next summer, Mourinho seemed pretty disappointed with the situation and it’s understandable. I no longer care 1% about the result either, let’s just hope the team gets unhurt to the plane and they get back to Carrington asap.

I saw De Bruyne in Knokke, casino in Belgium yesterday at 2 in the morning. Completely irrelevant but wanted to share regardless

Should be canceled, it's clearly going to be a training practice anyway, and i can't imagine how the roads will be like for the fans.

Is that the virtual sports betting? Never watch cricket and baseball so wouldn't bet on something I know next to nothing about.
