David Moyes | West Ham in talks with him for managerial job

Moyes is the right man for Sunderland, a better option than their previous managers Dick, Poyet and Di Canio. They are fighting to stay up so Moyes is the right one, just look at what he did to Everton. I also don't think they will go down this season, they lost their first two games but mainly because they lost half of their first choice players with injuries. Moyes is an experience manager in EPL and he'll be fine to avoid relegation but the statement he said yesterday was surely a low mentality for an experience manager like him. It's a logic and honest statement though lol.

Morning Davie.

Because that's what good managers do you ugly feck. They get better results than shit ones. You're a "CL manager", Big Sam is a mid table one, prove it by finishing higher than him with the same squad.

Why didn't any journalist call him out on this?

They rarely ever do, i suspect he's still a good source of info for them.

He's a CL level manager anyway so Sunderland is just a step stone for him to get back to top flight innit.

Fergie got more stick in the press for finishing 3rd with United than Moyes got for finishing miles outside the top 4 and getting sacked. fecked off to Spain, brought a few journalists over and had cozy interviews about how well received he was in Spain, free food, then he failed miserably, complained that it was all due to lack of money etc. Returns to England, still complaining about getting the sack so early at United, still insisting that he belongs the top clubs in the world, insists that Sunderland are in for a relegation battle. Media in general still giving him an easy ride, still publishing the same dross, still not asking him any difficult questions.

So yeah, i wouldn't exactly be unhappy if he fails miserably for a third time in a row..

Fergie was hounded for 'shredding his legacy at every turn' if he went a couple of seasons without a title. Guys like Moyes and Wenger seem to be immune from that. Fergie battled the press though, it made him many enemies.

Defoe was their ONLY out ball when they were under pressure. It is understandable if you want to defend but he should have understood that letting City pressure you is almost always going to end up in you conceding because of their quality in attack. Sunderland should have tried to keep the ball in the other half and Defoe would have been the best choice for it.

Regardless, most on here immediately knew that it was a blunder as soon as the sub was made. It is not that this criticism is with hindsight. The match day thread is filled with posters calling that sub out as a mistake. Sunderland were pressuring City at that time and looked decent value to get even a second. I know it is City and the general thought for Sunderland is to be happy with a point, but the match situation also dictates how the play should be made, else why would the manager be needed at the game if he simply has to make blind subs. The fact that Sunderland had the City back line getting pushed back was for all to see and it was clear that was 'cause of Defoe. Unfortunately Moyes couldn't see it.

Come on now. Januzaj khazri and borini are completely capable people to play the ball away from their goal. It was clear that last few minutes they would get very little of the ball, as they barely had any of the ball most of the game too. They needed a defender to cope with the pressure more than they needed an attacker for an 'if we get the ball' situation. If you actually believe that city would be the team under pressure the last few minutes then I don't know what to say. Defoe would have barely been involved towards the end once city went full on attack.

Anyway my point isn't that Moyes is top class or whatever. It's just that he at the moment seems to be doing much much better than many previous managers of Sunderland. So they have nothing to complain about.

You didn't see much of the match if you don't think Sunderland were causing City issues that time. Defoe was causing City's backline to get pushed back and Sunderland were causing issues that time.

How is he doing 'much, much better' than previous managers? He has 0 points. So unless the previous managers were on less than 0 points from the first 2 fixtures, I don't think he is doing any better. In fact, Sunderland are in relegation positions right now.

I was happy for him to get another job, and would normally have wished him well.:)

However seeing as its Sunderland, and their City supporting Poznan celebrating fans, I cannot..

Sorry Davie, I always want the Mackems relegated since "that" game..

City slacked off by the 70th minute or so. Till then Defoe barely got touches in the opposition third.

Every season Sunderland get thrashed. Last season Norwich thrashed them 3-1 and could have scored lot more. They didn't even look like a team. At least they look half decent now.

No they don't. A quick look at their forum and you will see that the fans aren't one bit happy with their performances. They were diabolical against Middlesbrough - at home, may I add - and only looked ok(ish) when Boro were 2 up and they were chasing the game late on. City absolutely dominated them too, and on another day they could have been battered. Not sure how you have come to the conclusion that this disjointed mess of a team look any way decent, to be honest.

he's still doing the same thing that ultimately drove me mad when he was managing United, ie. making negative statements. Just shut your mouth Davie and get on with it.
we all know Sunderland are crap but no need to get into the heads of your players that you expect them to be relegated!

If he sees himself as a CL level manager and has already decided that Sunderland will be in a relegation battle, why take the job in the first place?

He is such a goon and his actions and comments since being fired only reaffirm that we acted correctly in binning him.

The man is just an utter gimp that talks absolute bollox every time he opens his mouth. It's actually surreal thinking that he managed us.

Based on what exactly?

City slacked off by the 70th minute or so. Till then Defoe barely got touches in the opposition third.

The point of having Defoe is not his effectiveness on the ball, it's the potential havoc he can cause with his pace and finishing that will force City to be cautious when playing out, drop a few feet deeper, etc. No-one else in that team has remotely the same threat.
There are 2 sensible ways to see out a game. One involves a target man (Drogba did this well, Berba too): long balls towards them stick to them due to strength/control, the team moves up the pitch, opposition momentum dies, and you win FKs/corners/throws. The other is the potential of a counter attack, if you leave on someone like Hernandez, so opposition defenders cannot sit on the half-line casually mopping up clearances, because if they miss one it's a goal. If you withdraw your focal point of attack and leave 2 wingers, well...good luck on keeping that ball away from your penalty box.

No their intention was to have men behind defending the last 5-6 minutes. Defoe was barely going to get chances and the only chances he would probably get would be on the counter which surely januzaj or borini could do well with too? Mourinho for withdrew Rooney an attacker for Smalling a CB in the 84th minute vs Southampton and Moyes did it vs City. I'm sorry but it's pretty crazy to call anyone incompetent for that.

Two points.

We had a two goal lead and were controlling the match.

Sunderland were hanging on for a draw. The moment they took off DeFoe and no one replaced him, City camped in their box and got their win.

Yes it is incompetence.

Sunderland are crap, but Moyes is worse. He should retire and open a chip shop or summat.

He must be related to Moyes are something. How can you do worse than having a 100% losing record!

Not sure if you are serious. True both advocaat and Moyes had 100% losing record but performances were lot different. By your logic van gaal and mourinho are of the same level at this juncture as they both had 100% win record after 2 games but obviously our performances under mourinho were much much better than Under van gaal?

Did you see them at the start of last season? They looked 100 times worse. They lost at home to Norwich (newly promoted, may I add) 3-1 and away to Leicester 4-2 in their first games. And it could have been much much worse too, could have easily been 6-1 with Norwich . So bad that they had some urgent meeting on the following Monday after the Norwich game to discuss the poor show. They look miles better than last season starting Sunderland team who before Sam took over looked worse than Derby in 2006 or so when they had 11 points from 38. Even under Sam they were often appalling till Feb or so when they started grinding out results to end up above relegation.

It is your logic to judge managers after two games, not mine.

If you had actually read what I was talking all along instead of commenting randomly, then you would have known my point was that it's too early to call Moyes a failure or useless for Sunderland because it's just 2 games and they have had managers who had even worse starts than a couple of 2-1 losses and yet ended up at a decent level.

He'd be telling us on one hand that he deserves to be managing an award winning chippie but on the other hand his chips just really aren't any good, and they wont get any better until he's had a reasonable time to replace the chip fat

So they lost against the champions elect and a promoted team? Ok. And this time, they have lost against potential champions and a promoted team. They also could have been steamrolled 5/6 nil by City on another day. Miles better? You're having a laugh. As I said, pop over to the Sunderland forum. They obviously know their stuff and they aren't happy. In fact, I've seen posts along the lines of they had a better squad at the start of last season than they do now. Moyes is a joke.

But it's not too early to call him miles better than last season. Sam kept them up, they should therefore start the season in a positive frame of mind, Moyes has brought that crashing down in the space of 2 games by his negative attitude.

He has actually deteriorated since he left us.

Downward spiral.I blame the Sunderland board for appointing 'a name' rather than do what Southampton or Middlesborogh did.

He's made £6.5m in being sacked since he took over at Utd in July 2013.
That's over £2m a year for being repeatedly bad at a job.

I find it depressing that he's keeping another manager somewhere in the football world, out of work.

I wish Moyes would just vanish along with any memory of him ever having anything to do with Utd.

Moyes.... Utd's great shame.

Sunderland fans are crazy. I judge their disapproval more by their level of stadium walkout more than comments from forum. They had nearly half the fans walk out during their third or so game of the season.

But it's not too early to call him miles better than last season. Sam kept them up, they should therefore start the season in a positive frame of mind, Moyes has brought that crashing down in the space of 2 games by his negative attitude.

That's Sunderland in a nutshell. They had a good end of season in 14/15 and appalling start to 15/16 with the same manager. It was same under poyet too. They don't have positive framework till the end of the season.

Fergie and Charlton's tbf :(

And we lost 3 years...

Moyes drives downs expectations in this lifetime like a major religion.

Meanwhile genuine talent does the job for £40k a year. That is what my hometown team Burton Albion were paying Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink when he joined, he'll be on a lot more now at QPR of course. But he has real talent, put together the team that got us from league 2 into the Championship in successive seasons with very little money.

That is someone who could turn Sunderland into something more than a shambles, and he would not be talking about a relegation fight 2 games in either.

The philosophy of defeatism.

"I hope I was being realistic."
on the we're going down comments

On the bright side we've learnt a valuable lesson, thank god it's only a season. Imagine if he got 4th somehow and that 200m warchest

So, a manager loses 2 games on the trot, one against City and another where they were the better side for 60+ minutes, and we start to call his Sunderland stint a failure?
A sunderland of old with this side against a rejuvenated(although not fully clicking) City would have lost by 4 goals+. It's just one of those threads where the person in question will be bashed no matter what
