Mine was considerably less this year, I was very happily surprised. :D

So was mine, but it's calculated differently, in the UK you're treated as an individual , in France it's by family.
If a family of man, wife and 2 kids, and the total family income was €60000 - the tax would be about €1500 a year. about 2.5%

I'm single and it was still much lower than I expected.

WTF? Really? I'd move there if that was the case. I can't believe that.

Yes, it's called National Insurance , but again is zero on first £8000 a year so very low paid pay very little. But the rate is low compared to France.
It's a separate tax called National Insurance which (IIRC) you do still pay under £11,000.

Thanks, isn't this system a problem for the NHS financing?

It's different from France. Basically in the UK the tax and NI all go into one big pot and the government decides what to spend it on

That's not actually accurate it seems, I just checked. Apparently NI is set aside for welfare/social security needs, but any excess is loaned at very low rates to the government for other stuff.

I am missing something. It can't be income tax on the total amount that you are talking about can it?

I'm talking tripe here. If you are single and earn 25k per year you will pay around 2000€ and in general between 20k and 25k you will pay the equivalent of a month of income.

I wouldn't trust them as far as I could kick them to be fair, its like road tax supposed to be used for road repairs, but they basically seem to do what they like with it.

Never had much faith in politicians of any party, the UK politicians have certainly exceeded my expectations this year, unfortunately I fear the lies will only get worse as they try to wriggle out of the mess they find themselves in.

Aye, I'm fully expecting an initial continuation of the 'blame the EU' strategy when we come away with a shitty deal, and then I'm curious to see who the next target to deflect the blame onto will be.

Really hope England spins off Scotland, let Sturgeon lie in the bed she wants.

Setting aside that England is only one of the parts of the UK, do you seriously want to follow up a massive contraction of the UK economy via Brexit with cutting off another substantial chunk of GDP by losing Scotland as well? Is the goal really to try and make the UK as small and insignificant as humanly possible?

I just want to get rid of what is financially a drain on the economy, the UK is better off without. Post brexit subsidising Scotland is even more painful for the UK.

We have no idea whether the UK would be better off without Scotland, because its not as simple as just 'taxes out/spending in'. In the process you deliver a huge hit to UK international prestige and standing (which in turn does horrible things to our potential ability to sign trade deals and international agreements that favour us) and you open up a directly competitive market right on our doorstep who will most certainly be competing against us in tourism and a number of other industries. Oh and which also damages our national defense by stopping us from having control over all coastal routes onto our landmass.

Also seriously when did British people become all about wanting to kick other people out so their own little lives might be a few quid better off? Scots fought and died alongside our troops for hundreds of years, forged an empire with us, contributed to every aspect of British science, politics and culture, yet no let's tell them to feck off so we can save a bob or two.

I'm starting to actually hate my own country recently. :(

About the time the Scottish started slagging the English, so for as long as I can remember.

Guess that means you'd kick Northern Ireland out too? Basically England and (if they're lucky) Wales left. A not-so United Kingdom.
