Marouane Fellaini gets 12 month contract extension clause triggered

You doubters do realise that Mourinho frequently brings Fellaini on in the last few minutes of minutes, and regularly rotates him with other midfielders? The manager clearly values him as a player.
We all saw that v everton

We did the same with Berbatov and Evra before selling them. Not saying i'm sure we will sell him but the club are just protecting themselves.

We put the clause into every players contract for our own benefit. If they pull a Hargreaves we save ourselves £Xm+ a year.

We add another year and increase his value.

As well as the next match in which Mourinho dedicated the win to Fellaini.

Granted, Fellaini made a massive mistake against Everton. It happens. Even De Gea made some huge mistakes this season against Chelsea and West Ham. Mourinho can see past it because he knows that both players still offer a lot besides.

Fellaini is Mourinho's go-to-man to add aerial prowess at the back. It's something the manager's prioritised for years and it's not going to change. There are few better at it than Fellaini.

To be fair, I do sometimes wonder if I wrongly judge him as a footballer. Who am I to argue of his qualities when he has managed to play over 100 games under Moyes, LvG and Mourinho?

Could Mourinho be giving playing time as a carrot to make him sign a new contract?

Has he really benefited us in terms of results after coming on as a sub, besides last night? I think Mourinho has been wrong in his approach in defending small leads by going for a defensive option.

If this just protects us in terms of getting some money back for him when we get rid in the Summer then it's smart.

If this is us just signing him up for another year I'm gutted. He's not good enough to be a Man Utd player, he just isn't.

Doubt it we just took up the option on his contract. He didn't need to sign anything.

The years option was clubs to extend. I don't think Fellaini had a say.

The tree's firmly planted.

Any minute now...

'She cannae take the strain captain'
Came here looking for this and I wasn't disappointed.

My girlfriend hates football but for some reason finds this quote attributed to Moyes ridiculously funny.

Extensions are normally automatic when a player has made a certain number of appearances.

Obviously a sensible move. Can't leave for free in the summer, get a fee for him if you decide to ship him out, and if not you still have options. I mean, i want him to leave but this was obviously the right move. You could get 15M for Fellaini in today's market. Especially to China.

Dont see the issue. We either loose him for free or we make 10/15m on him in the summer. There is no way jose is stupid enough to let him go for free.

We sold morgan for 22m, probably only worth the orginal 15m. We are now in an era when a manager of united will strive to maximise the return value if players. Jose did this all the time with players at chelsea. Juan mata is a prime example.

Fergie also played this game with Veron many years ago. Despite him not settling into the prem, he hyped him up so much that we were able to convince chelsea to pay 15m+ for him. At that time we would of been lucky to get 5m as he was not a starter and when he did play, didnt settle.

Hopefully fellaini will now be sold in the summer for a deceng fee.

Well thats what i'm saying mate. The club could extend his contract whenever they wanted to, so Mourinho isn't playing him just to try to convince him to sign a new contract.

I think if offered a new deal Fellaini would jump at the chance, he doesn't seem to be kicking up much of a fuss about only being a bit part player this year.

I think he is gash.. But who am I. Three managers have kept faith in him and stuck with him even if he is shit.. There must be something there.
Basically just that he's different than any player out there. Simply by playing him you can change your approach quite a bit.

Mourinho rates him so I just have to make my peace with him being here for a while more.

Exactly.

I hope people who think a player signing a contract means he's here for the duration of that contract got a nice ham in their 'Welcome to your first season as a football fan' hamper back in August.

Didn't we give Nani a new contract to keep his value up then had to end up loaning him out while also paying most of his wages? At least a 12 month extension can't backfire that badly. He might be confident after the hull goal, and now this, could def be worth money for a goal Sunday..

We definitely need to move on from him. I don't hate him but we need to give younger player like Mensah more chance. I hope he plays well as a subs player and then other club will start to put some interest in him and start to make an offer this summer.

Nah, if we want to keep his value up we shouldn't offer him 5 years contract with £90k per week from the first place. The demand will be too much for other clubs. I think the club and the manager were really being serious to give him a chance. Injuries and new manager killed the plan off.

Just tells me he will be gone in the summer. Scored some important goals for us.
Would actually be good to see him go back to Everton. Scheiderlin, Fellaini and Barkley would form a good midfield.

Amazes me how so many people give him a hard time. Can't really blame him for saying 'yes' to a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

He got off to a really bad start with Moyes managing to pay above his buy out clause, then he had that wrist injury which coincided with his worst form. The Bayern Munich cross field run and slide tackle himself etc

Then he became the symbol of LVG's horrible style, just lumping the ball at Fellaini's mop of hair in the opposition box.

He's not been very good, and he's not the most likable lad on the pitch but he seems kind of quiet and unassuming in interviews and appears popular enough within the squad if we're trying to find positives.

I can't imagine that any fee we'd get for him with one year left on his contract would be a whole lot more than what we pay him every year. Not enough to risk him being here for another whole year anyway.

Wait until this time next year when he signs a new 3 year contract.

There'll be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Good news. Useful squad player to have and possesses a strong mentality as well.

Hes staying and hes been a solid player for us. Deal with it.

We have also been playing poorly most of the time he's been in the club and haven't gotten the results. He's by no means the only reason for that, but things are connected. Signing him was still one of a number of bad decisions contributing to putting the club in the place it has been for the last few years. He was never the type of player we needed.
