David Moyes | West Ham in talks with him for managerial job

I'll never get my head around how a manager as successful and brilliant as Sir Alex Ferguson thought David Moyes would be a worthy replacement to him

'I was told we were getting Ronaldo and Bale'.......Poor David still blames Woodward for wrecking his career. I wonder who he blames for the famous 81 crosses at home to bottom club Fulham. Probably the tea ladies at Old Trafford.

It wasn't just 81 crosses at home to bottom club Fulham... It was 81 crosses at home to bottom club Fulham who had 6ft 7 Dan Burn playing at CB.

The mind boggles...

His latest quote: "We could probably have had another 3 points or so but are roundabout where Sunderland should be"

With every negative comment it's becoming clear that he wants out, but he wants his payoff. It's shameful. He was supposed to be a humble, dignified, and hard working Scot. Yeah right.

He probably had the plan that he'd lead Sunderland to (relative) success then leave for a major club, with Sunderland fans saying "Fair play, he was always destined for bigger things - after all, he was Manchester United manager."

I was on the fence but now I'm convinced, he is deliberately trying to get sacked and get a payoff. Those most recent comments about the January window and post-match this weekend are all the evidence I need. The con-man is trying to put the owners in a position where they know his position is untenable and they have to fire him/pay him off. He's a joke.

It is amazing how a "professional" would do something like this.

Agree with you guys about him wanting his payoff. He won't resign because of this.

Reading some of their fans' comments, some of them believe that if they do down, he's the best man to build something and take them back up. Unfortunately, I think they can't see that he doesn't seem to fancy staying there.

A fair few of them do seem completely blind to his time at United and Sociedad.

I don't remember this many head scratching statements while he was at Everton. Maybe others do.

If it his goal to just get his payout then he's proven just how much of a self absorbed tossed he really is.

he built up a comfort zone at Everton where nobody questioned him, and had no pressure to win with a very easy going understanding chairman. Top of the league you need wins, bottom of the league you need wins

He might actually be a good manager in the Championship, certainly his pragmatic style of football is more suited to that league.

But the problem is he has most likely lost the players at this stage, the current squad are likely not enamoured with him due to his continued public criticism of them. So unless he clears out the entire squad he will have trouble getting this group to play for him.

I actually thought he would get the sack this morning, or maybe Monday.

Hull & Swansea seemed to have jumped at exactly the right time (although it was harsh on both of their managers, tbf) but at least they had a full transfer window to try to sort something out. It's a bit too late for Sunderland now though, with only a week left.

feck of Moyes & feck of Sunderland supporters too.

Honestly, I think he believes the Championship might be below his 'level'....

If ever a manager deserved the sack then he is the one. However, that would mean Sunderland paying him compensation and I don't think they want to do that. This has all the makings of a brilliant war of attrition. Sunderland don't want Moyes as manager, but don't want to pay compensation by sacking him, whilst Moyes doesn't want to manage Sunderland, but won't resign because that way he wouldn't get any compensation payment. The longer this goes on, the deeper Sunderland will fall. Does anyone know how long Moyes has left on his contract?

David Moyes signed a four year deal when he was appointed Sunderland boss. I suspect there'll be some clauses in there that protect Sunderland in the event of a sacking.

Cheers. They'd be really stupid if they haven't done. At least we had a clause which reduced the level of compensation by failing to qualify for the Champions League. Although the best clause would have been not to have appointed him in the first place ..........

THIS

This perfectly sums up Moyes' situation. Everton was possibly the EASIEST gig in the Premier League. Think about it - very big club, big/loyal fanbase but very tight-fisted owners who, due to their refusal to spend, understood the limitations on David. No pressure whatsoever, just owners who wanted him to 'do his best' and keep the team in a respectable league standing that reflected their stature and lack of spending. So top 10, basically. No pressure whatsoever as long as he made top 10.

Never won a trophy, while teams like Wigan, did. If anything you could say, given the size of Everton, that he actually underachieved there rather than the common narrative of the underdog who did better than expected.

Since he left his little bubble of invincibility, he's been exposed - at United, he needed to 'be the best' and wasn't capable. At Sunderland, he needs to over-achieve and keep them up and so far, he's failing. Coz he's never genuinely over-achieved in his career, it was smoke and mirrors.

Honestly, I think he believes the Championship might be below his 'level'....

Well after this season it will be. Unlike the Champions League which he has never actually qualified for, he is bang on course to take a side into the championship.

He definitely underachieved in the cups. Stable club, settled team, good players, not fighting relegation or worrying about champions league, they were arguably in prime position to be a good cup side.

And yet in 26-27 attempts he made only one final and never won. Not even a league cup.

Be surprised if he sees it that way:lol: He's not the most realistic soul...

My boss is a Sunderland fan and most of my team based up North. They are split. Some want him gone whilst others blame the owner for not giving him money.
The Geordies working with them are absolutely loving it.

Hasn't he been given more money than any manager in the last number of years, though? Haven't Sunderland spent much more than most of the teams around them? It doesn't seem to hold up.

They also have, in Defoe, the best goalscorer in the bottom half of the league.

He's just useless.

It doesn't but when you have lots of friends in the media putting it out there on a regular basis that he has had no money to spend, some people will start to believe it.

Martin Samuel in today's Mail:

''Misery Moyes is no salesman

What is it about David Moyes when the transfer window comes around? Honesty is an admirable quality, but there comes a point at which a manager has to be a salesman, too.

Yet, last summer, he spoke of being in a relegation fight two games into the new season — then wondered why recruitment was such an issue — and now he has painted an equally bleak picture of his January options.

'I'd be kidding you if I said the players we are going to bring in will make a big difference,' Moyes told reporters. 'We probably couldn't get that level of player — and we probably wouldn't have the finances to do it. Our funds are limited with a capital L.'

Just as such talk is ruinous with a capital R. We can all see that Sunderland are in trouble — but isn't it up to Moyes to accentuate the few positives? The size of the club, maybe. Their recent record of defying the odds in the second half of the season.

What if Sunderland did come across a diamond in the rough? How could Moyes sell the move to him with this talk of relegation, limited funds and even more limited players?

It is bad enough that owner Ellis Short behaves as if falling into the Championship is the plan, without the manager displaying all the optimistic flair of Private Frazer from Dad's Army. Thar doomed.''

To be fair most of the time Sunderland have survived after Xmas has been due to sacking their manager and appointing a new one :lol:

Sunderland has announced the signing of Joleon Lescott on a short term deal. Of Moyes's old Everton boys, who's next? Tony Hibbert? maybe Leon Osman?

Just be clear Joleon - you aren't going to be good enough to keep Sunderland up, at least according to your new manager.

Rodwell, Pienaar, Anichebe and Lescott brought in. Now just need to get Leon Osman who is free agent, request Hibbert, Beattie and Van der Meyde out of retirement and sign Jagielka and Naismith. That's Sunderland sorted...for league one.

It is amazing how many of these midtable/lower midtable managers always turn back to the players they were successful with once no matter how things change. From Redknapp to Allardyce to Moyes...they all do same.

To be fair to them they have 8 injuries including their first choice keeper and 3 players in AFCON.

That's pretty bad if true

does anyone have any Sunderland supporting mates and asked what their thoughts are on this fool?

I watched our match with them on Boxing Day in the pub with a random Mackem who spent Christmas in the North West. We got talking about Moyes and he was happy to partake in gallows humour, asking me to take him back and all the rest. It seemed like he hated Short more though, similar to the guys on their forum.

True. Do you remember Nigel Quashie turning up at every hopeless cause throughout the '00s? And pundits would say stuff like 'he has vast experience of relegation battles'. No shit, but he's never actually survived one.
