Best ever English XI by county

I think historically Liverpool had a fantastic record of discovering young pro players from other clubs and bringing them in. I'm sure you can name more than me but Neal, Clemence, Keegan, Rush, Case, Hughes, Murphy and so on.

In terms of scouting schoolboys, and bringing them through I would argue Everton have had greater success.

I've just whizzed through my head eating an egg sarnie and from Shankly's first team right through to the late 70's / early 80's I can only think of Dalglish that was a star when we bought him. Ray Kennedy was at Arsenal as a striker but Paisley put him in midfield and madehim a better player. Souness was known at Boro but not a star. McDermott and Alan Kennedy were bought from the Geordies but wern't stars. I can't think of anymore but Iam sure there maybe some more.

Yorkshire:

Gordon Banks

Kyle Walker
Michael Dawson
Jonothan Woodgate
Danny Rose

Aaron Lennon
Nicky Barmby
James Milner
Kevin Keegan

John Hawley
Jimmy Greenhoff

The Scouse second team would twat that lot.

Cass might be right, I'd axe Hawley & bring Billy Whitehurst in for Yorkshire.

edit - Ron Flowers (Wolves legend, 49 England caps, born in Doncaster) into MF too, maybe

edit 2 - Tommy Taylor is Yorkshire too, would get in on reports

I suppose it depends on what you regard as a star. Clearly Dalglish was an outstanding player even then.

But there are probably a list of a dozen players who were established first team players and already internationals when you signed them if not in the Dalglish class. People like Peter Cormack, Graeme Souness, Willie Stevenson from Rangers, Barry Venison, Alan Kennedy, Steve McMahon, Craig Johnston, David Johnson, Gary Gillespie, Geoff Strong...maybe Peter Thompson from Preston.

I think Liverpool's success throughout those decades was finding those relatively unknown players and fitting them into your system. People like Steve Nicol, Rob Jones, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Ellyn Hughes, Ray Clemence and a host of others who you know better.

I think when the quality in the lower leagues dried up as we entered the Premier League level, your scouting network couldn't fill the gap and this is one factor influencing your lack of league titles for so long.

You guys really excelled at scouting the lower leagues.

Surely one of the NE counties has to be in with a shout (Northumberland or County Durham).

Without pinpointing exact locations you've got the likes of Robson, the Charltons, Beardsley, Waddle, Gazza, Shearer, Carrick, Bruce to name but a few...

Belfast

1. Phil Hughes
2. Pat Rice
3. Dave Clements
4. Allan Hunter
5. Terry Neill
6. Danny Blanchflower
7. George Best
8. Norman Whiteside
9. Derek Dougan
10. Jimmy McIlroy
11. Sammy McIlroy

Subs: Billy Bingham, Mal Donaghy, Jonny Evans, Bryan Hamilton, Gerry Armstrong, Peter McParland, Bertie Peacock, Sammy Nelson, David McCreery, Cassidy

Now just need to find a keeper as none of the great ones seem to be born in Belfast!

I agree with the mid 80s onwards signings thats why I stopped in the early 80's . I don' t really know the 60's signings as wasn't even born. I know their names though as my dad still doesnt stop talking about them. Ron Yeats and St John were from Dundee and Motherwell I think. Souness was established and Kennedy but I thought they were just players in average teams.

Kenny I 'd say was an established interntional and a hero at Celtic so I guess thats what I meant as a star.

When Shankly signed Ron Yeats in Scotland he asked Shanks where about is Liverpool ? Meaning where about in England. Shanks says in Division one son and Yeats says I thought you where in Division two ? Shanks says.. aye son we are but when we sign you we'll soon be in Division one.

Elisha Scott.

None of you Mancs claimed Roger Hunt yet ? A World Cup winner. Not many English ones of them knockin about .

Kent:

Chris Smalling
Ian Wright
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Wayne Routledge
Andy Townsend
Gary Pallister

That's what I'm up to so far

Nah m8, Aaron Lennon...

...no, you're right actually.

Boss thread this.

Getting people to use their heads and speaking about great players. A thread without people arguing or being dickheads.

Hooooraah !!

Pallister always sounded like a North Easterner to me.

Edit. Ramsgate. Crackers.

I vote for a Dave Chappelesque county draft to settle some disputes.

On behalf of all scousers, the Irish can claim John Aldridge without any objections.

Best premier league XI from Dublin

---------------------------Randolph----------------------
Richard Dunne-----McGrath-----Moran.....-Robbie Brady
Liam Brady----Ronnie Whelan---Johnny Giles----Damein Duff
--------------Robbie Keane------Niall Quinn-----

Feck Dublin gimmie Cork any day all they need to beat Dubs is Roy Keane,Denis Irwin,Noel Cantrell,Frank o Farrell and ummmm Sonia o Sullivan and Cillian Murphy

And Mcateer.

Someone listed him in the Scouse team along with Aldridge . Lawrenson is Irish too but born in Preston ( I use to study the footy stickers as a kid ) .

There's another example that fella was on about yesterday of Liverpool buying from a smaller club . Think he came from Brighton.

Anyway Big Dunc. Still looks like us Scousers rule .

I think our city Big Dunc could have two teams .

A North Liverpool and a South Liverpool one or an inner city one and one from places like Kirkby , Huyton and Bootle.

If you go by the old school definitions, Liverpool and Manchester can be classed as Lancashire, suppose that would be cheating though

I think the Glasgow team would piss this to be fair.

Good point and my first thought is always the Lisburn Lions of 1967 when I see local based player threads. I think every player was born within 20 miles of Parkhead.

Still think the Scouse first team would twat them like .

Carragher against King Kenny .

Interesting.

On second thoughts.

A Glasgow team would never work out as the Celtic lads wouldn't pass to the Rangers lads.

I don't mind these vs. any Scouse XI with Carragher & McAteer in it.

Corrigan

G Neville
Mike Doyle
Wes Brown
Byrne

Bell
Scholes
Eddie Colman

Lofthouse
Viollet
Finney

But if it were for the "greater good" of spanking the English I'd think they'd be fine.

The Rangers lads would pass the ball to the English though.

Anyway. Scousers arent really English. Dont tell anyone.

The front three would have no chance .

Tommy Smith
Thompson
Carragher
Lawler

Three grafters and a loon in that lot.

Seems a bit soft that Cork team. You'd need Graham Norton in there too for the man-to man marking.

<tentatively fingers Thommo as the loon>

@Cassady - You're having far too much fun with this, :D. Scouse team is strong though. No sign of Dixie Dean yet is there?

Lancashire

Jimmy Rimmer / Swift?
Neville Foulkes Jones hi Blanchflower
Finney Scholes Bell J.Connelly
Rashford Viollet

?

Never seen half of em play like but does it sound close?
