Top 4 race 2016/17

Turning out to be a terrible first season for Mourinho, this. Despite Arsenal and Liverpool dropping points right and left, offering us clear paths into the top four, we're just completely unable to raise our game to the required standard.

We're simply not better than this, and it is worrying given the support Mourinho's been given in the transfer market, that we've been unable to make any sort of progression.

To be fair, we've won a trophy and then seen his squad decimated just when we hit 3 games a week. It's not a terrible first season.

After every match we loose points: Top 4 is definitely gone.

After every match we win and oppo loose points: We will get top 4.

It's Liverpools to lose now. Our fixtures are too difficult and Arsenal are crap. El is our best chance, time to get realistic. You can't draw with Stoke, West ham, Burnley, West brom, Bournemouth and hull at home and expect top 4.

Nothing's over yet. We win our games in hand and we're level on points.

Jeez, yes we need to be more clinical in attack but at least we look far better in defence. This time last year every time a team attacked us we conceded a goal.

Progress is being made and 19 unbeaten in the PL is a great building block for next season, we're a team in transition and at long last it looks like there is progress on the pitch.

Just not consistent enough to get top 4. Even when other sides slip up and we have chances to make up ground I have no faith in this team's ability to put other teams away and do the business consistently in front of goal. The draws have really killed it for us.

It will only be a bad season if Utd miss out on top four and don't win the Europa League.

When does this transition end mate? Been transitioning for like 5 years now.

Imho under Moyes and LVG we were deteriorating. This season is the first season where we have seen some positive transition, not necessarily by the points won in the league but certainly based on what we have seen on the pitch. We look very solid now and create chances, we just need a few more attacking threats. Let's be honest any team would struggle losing a player like Rooney, which effectively we have had to deal with.

Not shocked in the slightest. United still in a good position, though... Still consider Arsenal out of it.

Everyone bar Chelsea has had injuries and squad problems though.

Spurs have seen every key player injured, including Kane twice.
City have had injury issues and have an aging squad.
Arsenal...it goes without saying they have injury issues.
Liverpool have a complete lack of depth and have had to deal with Mane, Lallana, Henderson being out and they look a completely different side at times with those injuries.

This draw allowed Arsenal to overtake United again if they beat West Ham tomorrow.

We're now officially out of it. If we cant beat Everton at home (and a host of other teams) i dont think we'll fair any better away at City, Asnl and Tottenham... or beat Chelsea at home

All hands on deck for the Europa League

Doesn't matter mate. Playing this way, i doubt United or Arsenal will get there. At least you have a chance with the Europa League. Better focus on that.

Given GD, Spurs are now effectively 9 points clear of the 5th placed team (United, or even Arsenal if they win their game in hand). I don't see that gap being closed from here on.

Spurs got quite a good fixture list left too, right?

I simply cannot believe Utd have dropped points against WBA and Everton BEFORE their horrendous fixture list kicks in. Unacceptable for a team that has spent so much.

Yes, pretty much.

3 wins and 3 draws should pretty much seal 4th for Spurs. Though obviously should aim to finish 2nd minimum. Depending on Arsenal fcking up tomorrow Liverpool also need 4 wins and 3 draws to guarantee 4th.

Different ball game unfortunately, don't see any manager getting 3 years of no success at this club in today's game, regardless of how good they are. I don't necessarily agree with it, but that's how it is

Liverpool still have quite a way to go. The squad was already paper thin and with the loss of Mnae for what looks like an extended period there is nowhere for them to to go and get players except the under 23 squad. One more injury to a key player and I can see us missing out on 4th place. It will be interesting to see the bench tonight. Sturridge is back in training but a game on the bench and a splinter in his arse will see him out for the rest of the season.

If Chelsea beat City and we win our game in hand, then we'd be 1 point behind them with a trip to their ground. We're outsiders, but top four is still far from done.

Both were home games. Good thing we only have 2 left ;)

I admire your optimism, but it's done. We're not getting fourth! Not a chance. We're so poor at the moment, and with this month's fixture congestion we're not going to turn it around, and suddenly outperform teams we've been behind all season.

Bye bye top4. Yesterday was our last chance and we fecked up. Hope we win the europa.

If Liverpool and City both win tonight then I think the top 4 race is pretty close to being done.

As for United's chances, it's not so much about the maths of it all. It's more to do with the likelihood of them getting plenty of wins. Apart from a strong December, United's form has been far too sketchy to suggest a 7 or 8 game winning streak is on the cards.

Especially when they play City, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea in their last 9 games. Looking pretty tough for United. They'd be in good shape if they hadn't dropped stupid points at home to small teams. Best route is via Europa imo.

Changes everything if you win the EL, two cups in the first season + CL football.

I'm just surprised we've kept up our great defense from last year and are still picking up results considering all our injuries.

Dembele, Rose, Vertonghen, and Alderweireld have only managed to start about 2 games together all season.

It would be nice to see us actually get to play our real first XI at some point this year...hopefully Kane and Rose come back soon.
