I think Pereira will return next season, as he's been fairly impressive in his loan spell this season and has played box to box a good few times. With that in mind, would you get a deeplying playmaker who's technically good to rotate/replace Carrick or an agile box to box that can do the leg work in the midfield (of course this depends on the formation we use next season)?

His form has dipped these past few months but it's still vital he stays. We need the depth and he's still a key part of the dressing room. If Rooney leaves he'll be the only senior figure left.
I'd prefer to sign a replacement but can understand if he stays another year. Fellaini won't be sold either and I think we'll sign at least one central midfielder in the next transfer window. But I think other areas of the squad like the full back positions, central defence and adding another goalscorer to the starting 11 are more important at this stage.
Oh I fully agree with you. That's why Schneiderlin was moved on. Mourinho didn't see him as his main DM for the next 3-4 years so he decided to move him on while he still had value. Recouped most of the money and will use it on someone better. Still Schneiderlin was a better DM than Fellaini or Carrick in his current shape. Just not good enough for long term.
There does comes a point though when even a temporary option is better than what you have. See the Rooney->Ibra situation.

I'm at a loss as to who the top midfielder should be. I'd love to see Kroos here but I doubt that would happen as long as Carrick is still around and we are in need of a DM type.

Carrick was a good servant for us but its time to move on. We need a new CDM in the summer in place of him. It doesn't have to be someone exactly like him. Carrick replaced Keane after all. Thats why I want us to sign Bakayoko.

I would have preferred if he just stayed on as a coach, most games are too fast for him these days but Jose might be thinking of us being back in the EL next year and using him exclusively in that and the league cup.

Prefer Carrick kept on, rather than Fellaini as a CM option. So I'm ok with this.
It's important to have a few old heads around, he'll be United's longest serving player if Rooney goes, and the last from the CL winning squad.
Good news, one of the few senior heads around and we need numbers in midfield. Seems to be satisfied with a squad role.

Why not keep him and get a CDM? I mean if he leaves then all we have in CDM is the new signing then maybe Herrera if he isn't playing in the other midfield positions.
Letting him stay for 1 more year doesn't necessarily mean he's going to play a lot of games. Midfield depth is low, especially with Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger gone.

I'd rather we get a combative DM (who's not a complete numpty on the ball) and let Pogba be the playmaker while Herrera is a roaming box-to-box CM. Players who are both good DMs and playmakers are pretty rare and you have to spend more than a pretty penny on them. Xabi Alonso and Busquets the only two very high calibre ones from recent memory. Kroos and Veratti are gifted playmakers but not strong enough defensively for me to be DMs. The other MFs do more defensive work than them, in their respective teams.
I've liked Fabinho quite a bit actually. Saul form Atleti. Maybe Diawara from Napoli, though rougher round the edges. Not sure I've seen many more at a high enough level to judge.

Kroos would be brilliant. Only real way we can get him, is if we give Madrid de Gea, so it might not be such a viable option.

No problem with him being a squad player. But if this means we don't sign his replacement, and go into huge games next season expecting his 35yr old, creaking legs and complete lack of pace/physical presence to screen out defence, we're in for a hellish season. Late substitute to offer some calmness and composure, start cup games, that's cool. Anything more is a joke.
We should open talks with Keane too while at it

I'm hoping this will be us moving him into a coaching role with him still available to play if needed. Jose likes a small squad and a coach that can be called upon in an emergency or once a month would work well.
id rather have Carrick as backup to the squad.... in maybe 5th choice ahead of Fellaini

My only reservation would be playing Carrick and Fellaini in the same team.
I don't really understand why you would mind if his wages stayed the same... I'm slightly at a loss over this approach. Not all down to you personally at all, I recently witnessed two men arguing over Ashley Young's wages, and stating what they reckoned he was worth to the nearest £10,000 a week... I get that you want the club's resources to be used wisely, but MC's wages aren't going to decide that either way.
Apart from a period during the half way stage of the season Jose has done his best to phase Carrick out so I see no issue keeping him around as an option

Kroos would come in for all sorts of stick in this current United side. He's lovely at ball retention and can switch the play very well, but that's the least of our problems right now. He isn't hugely creative in an attacking sense and he isn't the sort of player we need sat in front of our back four in the Premier League.
It kinda stems back to the overarching point that no matter how many brilliant players we add to this side, similar problems will remain unless there is clear change in dynamic in an attacking sense.
Get Fellaini out. Get Carrick signed for another year. Pereira in and sign one with quality..
My only worry is how it effects our approach to the transfer window. If we let him go we are FORCED to go out and buy a proven top midfielder. I always felt with Scholes that often we would buckle at the last moment with transfers as we had that safety net to fall back on.

I think its important to create a wage structure that rewards our most important players fairly, but doesn't overpay mediocre ones. We've got far too many players playing peripheral roles in the team getting paid a fortune and it weakens our negotiating position with others.
Beyond that, I don't think its a good thing to have players coming solely because we pay the best wages. They're not the sort of players you want at your club.

Wouldn't mind seeing him in what should've been the BFS roll - calm, steadying influence for a spot or two, instead of being frozen out. Seems Jose wants a bit of a security blanket, especially as we seemed to suffer another injury/suspension spree in the middle of the pitch. The previous thinking was that Carrick was likely to retire if United didn't come calling, so if Jose is interested, I'm interested.
