United open Carrick talks

Why not keep him and get a CDM? I mean if he leaves then all we have in CDM is the new signing then maybe Herrera if he isn't playing in the other midfield positions.

Letting him stay for 1 more year doesn't necessarily mean he's going to play a lot of games. Midfield depth is low, especially with Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger gone.
Blind, Fellaini and Fosu-Mensah.

Bizarre unless its for a shift into coaching. He looks finished already. I thought his testimonial would be his retirement. I guess he can hand his experience on to whoever we sign this Summer to replace him.

If we are going to sell Fellaini then that is OK.

If we are going to be keeping Fellaini as well then please no. No more.

We are going to keep both, Fellani has already extended his contract with a 1 year option. We will need another in the summer. Going with 5 Midfielders is necessary because of playing 3 in midfield.

I have nothing against him but he is quite far beyond past it. More than some would want to admit here. I think it would make sense if we were to bring in a player and organically push him out of the side as that player transitions into the first team and that process was the way Jose was operating. There has been far to much slashing and burning of the squad in the last three years.

My only concern would be going into next season without a proper replacement for him. That would be quite negligent.

Whenever we play Carrick - Fellaini in midfield, the match tends to become slow and ponderous. I can tolerate it this season, but I hope we take every possible step this summer to make sure that we never have to play those two together.

You are right though, don't think any club will come in for an offer for Fellaini so fully expect him to see out his contract here. Let's see what happens in the summer.

Well We have to when their is no other option when Herrera or Pogba misses out, We will add one in the summer, Probably Fabinho i hope.

Hes not good, to be honest. He started the season quite well but has tailed off since the start of the year. Could be fatigue. As long as hes a bench option, I have no qualms.

If it is as a squad player then great but nothing more nowadays. Has been a great servant and a great player Indian summer time for him.

Welcome move, wouldn't bother him here with limited no. of matches for one more season.

He isstill better than fellani. And i think Mourinho is protecting him till the end of the season for more important games.

Great news.

He's still got bags of ability, he's got such great experience and if he comes in for 25 games next season then I'll be very happy.

I expect a big signing in that area but it doesn't mean we should get rid of Carrick.

Happy with that.

Don't think the M.E.N. are that impressed.

Carrick to get a new contract?
His form in recent months has not really been worthy of an extension but the Mail suggests the vice-captain will be remaining at United beyond the summer.

In United’s last six home league games, Carrick has been substituted in two of them at half-time, hooked in the second-half of another two and was the worst player on the pitch against West Brom.

The only Old Trafford game United won during that period - against Watford - came without Carrick in the side.

Don't mind if he stays as a backup for one more season.

Yep basically this, think he'll still have a part to play next season. Albeit a much smaller one (assuming we recruit the necessary quality).

Pleased he will stay, he's still a good player and will give us options.

I hope he isn't first team though, we need to get a younger more agile replacement. IF we are still relying on a 36 year old year to run our midfield we are in trouble.

The MEN talks garbage a lot of the time but they're right here. He's had a very poor season.

I think we should start looking forward and move on. We need to rebuild our midfield in the summer

I'm glad we're keeping Carrick for another year, he'll be a good backup option.

I expect we'll sign a new CDM and hope we'll ship off Fellaini.

I want to see a midfield pool of Pogba, newCDM, Herrera, Periera and Carrick next season.

For reduced wages and a much reduced role in the team, I don't mind. But if he's still starting a decent amount of games next season then we'll have made a mess of another transfer window.

I think it's fantastic news to have his winning experience around. Not that many left who know what it takes to win the league. Also evidence that Mourinho trusts him and they have a solid relationship

Of course it will be as a back up player and does resolve board from brining km another top midfielder to replace schweinstiger and Schneiderlin.

We still need to midfielders to replace the two we've sold this year. One can be Perreira and the other needs to be absolute world class.
Yep. Great he stays but does not excuse club from a major incoming defensive water carrier

If he stays that's fine by me but he should be slowly fazed out next season if he isn't fazed out it would just mean we failed to sort the midfield out again. He shouldn't really be starting as much as he does. Need to find a suitable replacement.

Hope Periera gets a chance, but with Mourinho I doubt it!

Only happens when no other options
We had full a quota of midfielders against Everton. Still played both. Although Fellaini played a more advanced role in the second half with Pogba coming on as a substitute.

Because Herrera and Pogba were coming back from suspension and injury. Or do you think it was strategic?

It says a lot about the current state of our midfield that Carrick is still considered a viable option as a backup.

Jose is no fool, keeping Carrick around the squad goes far beyond the simple option of using him as backup, this is merely a side point. His positive influence in the dressing room and his experience in being a integral part of one of the greatest United teams in history are far more significant. He has so much to offer our young players who are on the up and he strikes me as the type who would be willing to pass on that which he has learned over the years. The fact that he is a potential United coach for the future also goes in his favour.

He has earned his stripes and thus deserves the mere peanuts it will cost the club to keep him here.

Happy if Carrick gets another year.
His experience and mentality is great to have in the squad, and for me his passing hasn't gone backwards, just the movement in front of him. Good to have for another year if he does sign.

I love Carrick as a player, but he's approaching 36 and needs to either move on or retire.

If he stays, I don't want to see him starting more than 10 games. He should be used strictly as a backup player.

We need to sign his replacement this summer. Pereira is a good alternative to Pogba and Herrera. But we lack a controller type who can dictate from deep.

Pereira can do that, but, except for a few first team sub appearances a while back, he's never been given the opportunity at Manchester United.

He could be our Sheringham; was used sporadically, and his experience was useful on certain kind of games. Just like when Larson won the CL for Barca, when even Messi couldn't unlock that Arsenal's defence.

I like Carrick. Good professional, has good experience and provides a link to the past when we were successful. With Rooney leaving in the summer it is good to keep him. Wont be a starter by any means

If he's central to Mourinho's first team plans, then this is not good! We really need to start upgrading the squad, with top quality. Surely the money could best be used on a better player.

If this, along with Lingard is going to be the type of player we're tying down, it's just going to be more of the same.

I wouldn't be too fussed if he was just used as cover, but we need better in our starting XI.

Yes, he has his place in the dressing room but I'm more concerned over the fact that he'll be getting minutes on the field.

Jose likes to keep one or two experienced heads in the team. More than what they can do on the pitch, it's also the influence they have on the dressing room. It's important. Carrick is a veteran who can impart a lot of useful intangibles (such as a "winning mentality") to the younger players. He is one of the only players remaining from our 2008 CL winning side. It's a wise decision to extend his contract.

Having older players around to provide guidance is important. It's why Fergie kept Giggs and re-signed Scholes. It's why Mourinho signed Zlatan and why he re-signed Drogba and leaned heavily on Terry, Zanetti and Ramos at previous clubs. Good decision to keep Carrick on board. In fact Carrick should be made club captain next season.
