North Korea

How come?

I know it's a naive/immature question, but I'm interested to know, why can't the SAS et al (SEALs more likely, I imagine) be sent in to swiftly take the main fellas out at the same time as aircraft hitting any known, potentially dangerous launch sites?

They have mobile sites, for one thing. Taking all the leaders and launch sites out before several others can retaliate is impossible. The terrain of NK, lack of ability to place spies in such a closed off nation, and parts of Seoul being leveled all make things rather complicated. Not to mention, if things started going south (pun intended) without a quick victory, then NK would be leveled-with or without nukes. Meaning untold numbers of NK citizen's deaths, something oft overlooked.

Here's a long form article from The Atlantic on the subject:

One takeaway from this article:
An American first strike would likely trigger one of the worst mass killings in human history.

Yeah, seems like a tidgy bit of a bad idea . Will read the article tomorrow when I get chance, thanks.

Out of all days...he chose to do it on the 4th of July. Master WUM.

You never know...Trey's mesmerizing androgyny may intoxicate Kim into reunification.

They probably get a medal for each year of completed service
And I present to you the great Admiral Jon, who has avoided being obliterated by AA guns for over a decade now. Let us praise his dedication to his barber, and let us praise the Great Leader's gout-for that is the holiest of diseases.

 He's got medals on his fecking legs for goodness sake. Damn, he takes the Scouts very seriously.

They look rather like military versions of Pearly Kings, only less cheerful.

So I go from having the mental image of the Dear Leader on his knees pinning those medals on to having the episode of Friends where Joey talks about how his tailor used to measure his inseam and two NKPA General's discovering that it is unnecessary for the Dear Leader to move their junk around while pinning the medal on them.

NK is playing with fire.

I wonder if Trump is considering war as a means to save his failing Presidency?

Starting a war with N.Korea would be an absolute disaster and would be the most stupid thing Trump could do. Which is frightening as we all know how stupid he actually is.

Doesn't winning a war do good things for a Presidency?

Trump is a risk taker too :nervous:

Of course they'd eventually win the war but can you imagine the fallout? North Korea could destroy a city like Tokyo in a heartbeat. They wouldn't surrender, it'd just be chaos. Millions likely would die and everyone would be wondering what the feck was the point?

It would have to be a massive, bilateral strike without an official declaration of war. That obliterated the communications and military infrastructure of the country in one fell swoop, followed up by a land based invasion. This is pretty much the only way to decapitate the regime and its ability to launch ICBMs. It would probably have to happen soon, when the number of ICBMs are few.

This still wouldn't address what would likely happen to Seoul.

It's also impossible to carry out without being noticed. There's no such thing as a surprise large scale invasion in the era of satellites.

You can't really sneak a whole Marine Division onto the Korean peninsula. Which we'd need as we don't have the numbers stationed in Korea/Japan to control the aftermath during the next phase of the attack.

I wasn't aware North Korea had a widespread satellite network.

You'd do it one of two ways.

You'd do it under the guise of a Naval training operation near Japan. Or, you would slowly begin moving aircraft to Japan. Once a huge number of aircraft are stationed in Japan, you are poised to attack. You don't need a marine division in the first wave. You already have the South Korean military on the border.

Since North Korea does not have an extensive satellite network, they are open to such an attack without intelligence from an outside source. Obviously, any such action would have to be cleared at the highest levels by the Chinese, so without Chinese intelligence, North Korea could be decapitated in a single blow.

I'm not saying this is a good idea, far from it. I'm saying, if it had to be done, that's how it would have to be done. You'd need to clear the board of long range weapons and the ability for the NK government to effectively control and coordinate such weapons, in a very narrow time frame.

North Korea doesn't need its own satellite network to notice all that movement of military personal and equipment. I mean, shit, there would be an "invasion of North Korea" live thread on the caf before a single bullet was fired because it would so easily spotted with publicly available tools. If we knew exactly where in the air Erdogans plane was during the recent attempted coup don't you think we'd notice several armies gearing up to annihilate NK?

Yeah they probably have a decent spy network in the south and Japan. Probably achance they may have intelligence assets near certain us bases also.
