It´s not off-side, but on the continent some refs probably call it back for goalkeeper interference.

I'm laughing at anyone who thinks that if I cut the ball back from the byline to a team mate who is stood on his own on the six yard line that he's offside.

The mistake is by Wijnaldum. That should be a routine clearance of a poor short corner, but he missed the ball completely.

Unless the rule has changed, passing the ball backwards cannot be offside from what I understood

If you could be offside from a pass backwards, the game would be very different. I thought that of all the complexities of the offside rule, this one was a standard

Yep, just like Brittos was today.
Then they're not offside. As I said player position relative to the ball as it's played matters. If you're behind the ball it's not offside. The actual direction of a pass doesn't matter. If a player is ahead of the ball when it's passed they're offside no matter the direction of the pass.

How can people watch these games and think "there's such a lack of quality here", it's been fantastic stuff.
Fantastic to watch, sure. There is such a lack of defensive ability from every side so far. Only Mane's and Lacazette's were goals of individual attacking quality, virtually every other goal has been from sloppy mistakes or set-pieces that were very avoidable.

£70m Morata on bench . I am glad Conte selects his players of performance rather than price tag because Morata has been proper shite in pre season. Other than that, I am suprised at the ladk of depth in the Chelsea squad. Seems like many academy players in the squad for Chelsea.
He has not exactly had a pre-season has he? How the hell does Conte expect him to get up to speed. He is on a collision course with the owner here.

If the player who receives the pass is behind the passer then he isnt offside, so 99.999 percent of the time, when the ball is played backwards the player wont be offside!
Because that's not a rule. The direction of the ball doesn't matter.

You cant be offside if the ball goes backwards.

Weird that old wolf eyes decides to start with Batshit instead of Morata.

Michy is a better option right now. More familiar with the league

If you're ahead of the ball, you can.

You're and it's simple really.
I am not  there's no rule that mentions of the direction of a pass. Just the relative position of players and the ball.

If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was behind the ball at the time, he's onside.
If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was ahead of the ball at the time, he's offside.

Google Fifa laws of the game and show me where it mentions direction of a pass.

If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was behind the ball at the time, he's onside.
If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was ahead of the ball at the time, he's offside.
Exactly. It's a really simple concept.

But...if you're ahead of the ball, and the ball is passed backwards...you'll never receive the ball...and never be offside. You will likely be in an offside position but if you don't physically receive the ball, you can fanny about all you want. Much to the annoyance of your teammates.

Isn't he onside given the ball came off the goalie first?
He's onside because he wasn't ahead of the ball.

Eh people can turn around.

If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was behind the ball at the time, he's onside.
If the ball is played backwards and the attacker was ahead of the ball at the time, he's offside.
And if he's squarely in-line with the ball, he's onside?

I thought he was onside as the ball went backwards, but Clattenburg say it's offside anyway. He should know the rules.
Yeah if the definition is not backward play of the ball, bur the relative position of the player then he is probably off-side and actively interfering with Mignolet.

Nick is technically correct about the direction of the pass not being mentioned.

However, the key thing is that the offside can only be given if the attacking player is closer to the goal line than the ball (and here goal line means the line across the entire pitch).

This is why cutting it back to a player from the touchline who is on the six yard line isn't offside.
