German Elections 2017

Why do you call them duels? Do the party leaders carry pistols to defend their honour?
Translation mistake, in German duel (Duell) ist frequently used in a non combative context and the TV debate between the two candidates is always called 'TV Duell'.
because of cnuts like this...

He has really transformed into a full-time right wing moron.

Just went as well. Everything but another great coaliton please, I'd even take a Jamaica one.

Exit poll about to come in now.

Terrible result for the governing parties, Union 32%, SPD 20%. AfD best of the rest at 13%. Coalition options as expected, but I don't expect another grand coalition with this result.

13,5% for the AFD. Sad day for Germany.

The afd is 100% the result of the failure of the other parties. Nothing to do with "winding the clock 60 years back". In fact the other parties can thank god for all the infighting in the afd. With better leadership they could have become second strongest party (a bit of a stretch, but not completely unrealistic).

Winding the clock back 60 years. I wonder how much of their support is in what used to be East Germany?
In the former DDR they got 20%+, for sure. (My guess, official data isn't out yet).

Btw - preliminary result yields 88 seats for the AfD. Now that's a fitting result if I ever saw one

The SPD leadership said, that they want to leave the government and fancy opposition. I wouldn't take that as 100% certain, but the SPD is surely understanding that another 4 years as junior-partner won't do them any good.
Jamaika is the only other option. Lindner and green party both have strong incentives to go along considering their results.
(Groko as emergency option to prevent new elections, that could further strengthen the afd).

Recently I heard that Sigmar Gabriel was heavily defending the Iran deal. What is the attitude of the other parties (Liberals and Greens and CDU) towards it?

Everyone in favour, foreign politics was barely relevant during this election tho.

Sickening to see the AfD strengthening even more than expected. I wonder how many additional votes they'd have gotten if the media here wasn't so liberal/social - constantly pointing out how poisonous the AfD's hateful ideology is. I think even more casual voters would've been drawn in by the populism.

Just seen that AfD got 14% and 88 seats! You couldn't write that.

CSU getting slapped in Bavaria is quite amusing tho.
Although it'll probably lead to König Horst just advocating more right wing policies.

Jamaika coalition it is then.

No surprise with the Afd, if you have Merkel as a leader and a useless SPD and CSU, that happens

It probably would've happened eventually, regardless of who the leaders were. It's happened in most western countries. It's the will of the people.

Yeah, I don't understand the bewilderment from many. That result is absolute comparable to similar results from UKIP, FN, Wilders etc. A huge percentage of our societies simply rejects lot of modern norms, a huge percentage still is homophobic, xenophob, sexist etc.
Those voters were always there, they just didn't had a party to vote for (although one could rightfully argue that the CDU and especially the CSU basically held the same positions the AfD does today a couple of years ago) and now they did. The movement to the center from the old parties created the vacuum that the AfD could fill.

Dunno why people are so surprised or shocked.

The fdp got over 10% simply by being an alternative without any actual content. It's difficult to be more generic than Lindner. The government got a big slap and voters looked for something different. Last parliament we had 3 parties advocating the same policies in all important areas and one party whose contribution as opposition was to ask for the same stuff, just a lot more of it.
The mainstream news outlets act primarily as cheerleader for Merkel& Schulz and attack anyone who dares to criticize them. They certainly don't check the government.

It shouldn't be surprising that a huge influx of refugees/migrants in very little time is making some people uneasy. As bad as it is, the afd is the only party that offers something different. After 12 years of Merkel it's hardly outrageous that this catapults them to 13%. I'd call that a rather modest responds. Other countries elect trump or vote for brexit.
It's only going to be a problem in the future if the centrist parties continue to offer the same ideas.

Well, quite a shock. The Afd looked fecked after Frauke Petry left the party and their increasing far-right leaning (praising what Germany did during the 2 WW, saying Germany shouldn't feel ashamed for the Holocaust and that immigrants are aliens). Guess East Germany played a big role in their rise.
The only good thing is that the SPD has finally said no to Merkel.

Round table is great right now

They're getting votes from losers without a perspective.
People mainly voted for them (I read around 60%) as a sort of protest, unfortunately.
Funnily, the others are just plain dumb & really think the AfD will now 'get rid of all refugees', close borders & do more for Germans. First time I really feel embarassed & ashamed about my fellow countrymen. How can you be so ignorant & stupid?

If the sdp wont work with Merkel and I'm presuming she wont work with the afd... can she form a working majority?
Yes, with the green party and the FDP, the so called Jamaica coalition. Not much love between those parties tho, however it seems like it's the only option right now.

Consider yourself lucky that it's only 13% I guess :(
