Post-match discussion

Really pleased with the win, a draw would've been no good at all. It was a fairly even match so glad we managed to get a goal.

He was slow but more than anything else it's how he basically gave up by blasting it over that annoyed me. It was like "ah man, i've fecked up so here goes"

Lingard's first touch was not very good because he had to adjust his stride. If he makes a good first touch he most likely stays ahead of Erickson and can take one more touch before shooting. And this results in him being closer to goal and having time to look at the keeper.

First touch i what separates great players from duds.

Thought we started well then played pretty poorly for rest of the first half, mainly because we had no midfield and our players were too far away from each other. Spurs controlled the ball but they basically had 7 midfielders and didn't actually create much. Second half we squeezed up a bit more and I thought Lukaku had a great half and we were the better side second half. Wasn't the bus parking/ defensive/ stop Spurs from playing performance the agenda folk were predicting. Though we tried to match their back three which I felt was a bit pointless as they had no CF but other than that it wasn't a game where we were obsessing over what they were doing.

Lingard didn't score because instead of making a beeline for goal he kept looking back to see who was after him. It caused him to panic and blast the ball high and wide.
Yeah that was a horrible moment for me. Made even worse by the fact that Lingard is no slouch and he was caught by Eriksen, possibly the slowest man on the pitch. Had he cut inside across him he'd have been a certainty to score...probably

First half was absolutely pathetic. Our players were just passing it up the pitch to no one in the hope it wouldn't go to a Spurs player. Even the worst teams in the league will play with more composure and intent than this at home. It was also made to look even worse in the second half when we didn't do this, which suggests when we were doing it, it was to some degree at least by choice! It's infuriating when one our plars picks it upp, looks up, and deliberately passes the ball to where NO ONE ON OUR TEAM IS. No other team does this.

Second half once we were actually looking to get the ball directly to our forward players, was decent. As soon as we did this we looked like we could score, and Spurs suddenly lost some of their confidence. If we'd played like it the entire game it would have looked like a strong annd controlled performance.

- Young was good, but that big girly scream when Alli fouled him is why referees hate him and are correct to do so.
- Valencia was also at least trying to play well. Not sure if he managed it or not
- Matic isn't good enough to be a one man midfield but is good enough to look decent when he's trying to be
- Rashford and Lukaku...thought they were our best two players. Rashford was constantly running into space (and being ignored by his team mates) while Lukaku was feeding off absolutely abysmal service yet didn't stop working, and was a constant menace once we actually started giving him the ball.
- MMhikitaryan and Herrera...is there some kind of anti man ot the match award that these two keep competing for? Why are they both being so consistently useless? Mhikitaryan will actually go to an astonishing effort at times in order to avoid playing the right pass.

- Aurier...is there some alternate Universe where he's as good as Ronaldo and he's convinced himsellf he's living in it?
- Dembele. I like him. Came on, immediately got wound up after being caught daydreaming...then learnt from this by doing the exact same thing again 5 minutes later. He was literally furious at the idea our players would try to tackle him

The over praise of Spurs from commentators is getting really annoying now. It's that second team syndrome thing again we had with Liverpool a few years back. Anything that happens in a game involving Spurs, is turned into a way to praise Spurs. If Spurs have the ball, Spurs are imposing themselves on the game. If Spurs nearly score, Spurs are dominating. If Spurs nearly concede a goal, Spurs get praised for defending. If Harry Kane had played and had EXACTLY the same performance as Lukaku today, he woould have been given MOTM. At one point Neville literally praised Alli for not headbutting anyone. This is how low the bar is to praise a Spurs player now...not physically assaulting an opponent. At another point he spent 5 minuts praising them for cllearing the ball off their own goal line...as if other teams would just let it roll into the goal. Fecking grow up. They played ok in the first half, poorly in the second, for a team that wants to win the league. Could have gotten away with a draw but it woulldn't have been any better than getting away with. Just call it for what it is.

Not sure whether that is a post or a rant:lol: United do deserve at least some credit for their 2nd half performance. This Spurs team went toe to toe with the best team in Europe a couple of weeks back and are no mugs. Yes they weren't great today but that's because we made them not look great.

It was a close thing, 1-0's always are, but the positives for me were that we didn't look out of place against Spurs, the difference it makes when most of our players are 'on their game', probably only Mkyi not up to scratch, ironically he was having his best spell when Jose took him off. 'Proper shutting down' and 'proper tackling' by United players was taking place all over the pitch, something you don't always see (especially at Huddersfield) but you could almost taste the determination out there from United players.

I've always thought Lukaku and Rashford would make the best front two pairing, but after the 'route one' goal involving Lukaku and Martial, maybe need to think again?

Phil Jones has been incredible this year. If we can keep him and Bailly fit we will have a shot at the title.

Thought Jones and Young were fantastic today. Also thought Gary Nevilles appraisal of Jones in 1st half was extremely harsh and wide of the mark.

Miki was off the pace as he has been for some time. Herrera was also poor. Both need taken out of the team presently.

We still have a lot of work to do but when Pogba, Carrick, Felaini, zlatan, Rojo etc are back we will pick up again and put a great run together.

Also, for the love of God let's start fitting Rashford and Martial in the same team. Let our rivals worry about our attacking players instead of the other way round.

I've pretty much given up on Miki making it here. I was one of his biggest fans when he first joined, I actually thought he looked a level above everyone else in the team technically and seemed to just glide around the pitch. Now I just think he's a bottler, he can't find the final pass when under pressure and goes completely missing in games.

I counted at least 3 occasions when he was responsible for killing our attack by giving the ball away.

Today he was supposed to be linking the midfield to the attack but I don't know where the hell he was half the time, Herrera and Matic were playing lots of unsuccessful long passes from really deep (along the ground) which just kept getting cut out because there was no one there to join the play.

Not a rant, except for the bit about the commentary Spurs love in.

Second half was a good performance and a good game in general. Just a shame we didn't play like that in the first half.

I don't get the cricism about the entertainment factor today. I prefer watching games between the top sides where both are difficult to beat and one has to earn it...rather than when it's just a comedy of errors and ends up 4-0 to someone. It was nothing like the Anfield game.

The quality at the top of the PL definitely looks like it's going to be a step up from last year.

Arse collapsed as usual hence his dire goal record for a United attacker.

What is wrong with some people on this forum, are you actually mental? Are you even really a United fan? So many people in this thread sound like spoilt 5 year olds. We won today and you would think we lost 5 nil. We came 7th, 4th, 5th then 6th because Mou had inherited a team lacking in confidence and stuck playing a robotic style of football with zero creativity. But he still managed to win 2 trophies and qualify for the CL. We are now 2nd in the league only behind a City team scoring for fun, lost once, won all 3 CL group games, unbeaten at home and have scored 15 in the process and conceded 0. And people still have the audacity to complain about the clubs situation. We may not be playing great from the last 4 games but we have been surprisingly excellent for the most part.

What do some of you people actually want? Us to go and beat every single team 5-0? Be realistic. Is it a surprise we aren't playing scintillating football? We had 6 players out injured this time last week and the ones that weren't injured were obviously worn out because of the lack of rotation. Get a grip of yourselves. I don't think we ever started a season under Sir Alex as good as this, and if we did then it was few and far between. I think some people need to go and do some research about some of the years under Sir Alex, because we never played swash buckling football every season and we sure as hell didn't start this strong.

It is unbelievable how grown men (and women of course) can behave like such little children.

We were a lot better in the second half. Our resilience this season is very good, we have become a team that is very difficult to beat.

So, according to Souness, if they came to OT and took a point they would be called big team, and us getting point in Liverpool, was defensive?!
ok
Actually sky been a little more supportive of United last few months. Where all up to know they have used every attempt to knock or just play down every thing United do. They would overly highlight the bad and claim the good was not good enough.

SO to see Jamie and Souness giving us some support is nice but is it the build up to a fall they are trying? I also hate the fact that every game we get assessed by haters and not pro-United pundits. Yet they can get Quinn in for city and the other muppets for arsenal pool and the chavs. The debate is so one-sided that souness has actually had to defend Jose and United because he knew. And if there is one english club he does not want to be supportive of i would guess he'd pick us.

If i had a choice to avoid sky, i would.

Hear hear.

Full scale meltdowns because we don’t put top 6 rivals to the sword!? Like these are seriously good teams, in much better recent form than us. We’ve started extremely well and despite losing players in key areas are remaining right where we would have hoped to be.

As usual because people aren’t seeing expansive highlight reel YouTube football for 90 minutes it’s a disgrace and an excuse to yap.

Thought in a very tough fixture we were very good today. Started well but then couldn’t keep the ball, but most importantly a tremendous response in the second half.

I get it if people want to yap at Mkhi, or Herrera or maybe they think Lukaku isn’t doing enough... whatever, there are of course valid criticisms but it’s so OTT and depressing on here for the most part.

Been at a wedding all day so had to give up my tickets. Delighted we won, did we deserve it? feckers always win when i don’t go!!

What is wrong with some people on this forum?

Big question, but yup.
Many people in this thread sound like spoilt 5 year olds
True, been true a long time.
We won today and you would think we lost 5 nil.

We are talking moaners, especially of the football-clue-free variety
What do some of you people actually want? Us to go and beat every single team 5-0?

Oh, even if that was happening, the moaners of the Internet would still moan. The freedom to comment elicits negative vibes more than positive. Its a kind of law of the medium. A lot are types whow wouldnt open their mouths at a match or in the pub. Or have ever been at a match or a pub. Keyboard warriors, mixing it (virtually) with the grown ups. You have to ignore it, see it as background noise, or actually turn it off.
Get a grip of yourselves.

Won't happen.
Some people need to go and do some research about some of the years under Sir Alex

Match day thread moaners do research?
It is unbelievable how grown men (and women of course) can behave like such little children.

Some of the posters may be quite young to be fair. Football and British/European culture may be new to some people. I think there is a quite a strong voice now on the Caf of people with a better-informed, more tuned-in perspective. But those of us like you, with good and bad memories of earlier eras, and respect for hard won gains, need too keep speaking up.

Jose's MUTV interview was interesting, it seems he doesn't think we support Lukaku enough. I wonder where he's getting that impression from? It's not from the match-day fans surely?

A one nil win, a perfect result, clean sheet, 3 points, no more needs to be said really.

I have seen the match twice after I recorded the game. I could not see where Spurs outplayed us at all. All I saw was a poor first half by both teams where we had the better chance. And a very good second half from us where not only we scored but Spurs hanging on for life around the 54th minute for a few minutes where we could have scored 3 goals. Lukaku save from Loris. The Mikhi save that went in between the legs of Loris. The defender's last ditch save from the Mikhi rebound, the Lukaku header, Lingard's miss.
All they had was the Ali chance. It was not as if we were parking the bus at all. I agree with Holy trinity and others. What is wrong with some of you? We beat Spurs who are among the top three teams in the PL along with us. They were equal on points and everyone expected them to beat us. We are not going to beat top teams by 5-0. Be satisfied that we played well and beat one of the challengers.

I was wondering the same. I almost thought he was talking about Rashford as there was boos when he went off but then he mentioned Lukaku and I thought that weird.

Big myth. Everyone watch Erikssen from time to time would know he is deceptively quick.

What with people judging playears' speed nowadays? I saw people randomly call "quite quick" players slow dor quite few times now.

Wow, couldn't agree more but I still think we can do better if Jose given a good chance in the next 2 transfer Windows, we need to replace some players really, but yes it's a great start to the season under Jose.

I was surprised how easily brushed aside was one of the Tottenham defenders by martial for the goal.

I think we seriously need to look at dropping Mhkitaryan and playing Mata as a 10 if we have to persist with playing a 10, personally I think we need to look at 4-3-3 once Pogba is back.

It was always going to be a hard game regardless and the important thing after a few poor games and performances was to get a win which we did so hopefully this stops the rot and we kick on again.

Very entertaining match. Great intensity from both sides. No one had a chance to stand on the ball and look around for a pass.

Important home win against a team that is competitive in the EPL and Champions League. We defended well and Martial showed impressive composure on the match winner.

I think set pieces continue to be a problem. So many big targets lined up in the box and the deliveries are just awful for the most part. After each poor delivery, I think; what could Mesut Ozil have done with that chance.

Since about 3 months into the Moyes disaster, I've been watching United matches with the audio muted. I throw a lot fewer socks at my TV if I don't listen to stupid, arrogant announcers.

Thought Jones and Young were fantastic today. Also thought Gary Nevilles appraisal of Jones in 1st half was extremely harsh and wide of the mark.
Watched 1st half then had to go blackpool with family. Chuffed with result. Agree about nevs appraisel on jones, didnt think he was that bad. He couldnt do much about his collision with De Gea, but nev called him rash then and numerous other times. Also nev pissed me off with a few other comments. One was Mhikitaryans dive, but it looked like there was contact but they didnt show a close up, and nev straight out said he dived whilst ali dived and nev refused to say he dived but again called jones rash.

The other was a Herrera challenge, which nev was adament he lunged and even left the floor but replay looked like he just went to the floor on his bum.

Anyway rant over, 3 points and haters can piss off. Oh and if Kane was playing then we would be looking at 0 points as he always punishes our defence. Sarcasm.

Kane scored total of 1 goal against us in a dead rubber game where we didn't fancy it having eyes fixed on EL. Other games, he was in our CB's pocket.

I think what upset most pundits was that they were forced to eat their words. They all thought we would get beaten but we beat them. Now the only thing they can say was that Spurs outplayed us. They did not outplay us. It was an even game with them shading us in the first half but we were much the better team in the second half. No one mentions, the saves Loris made in the first half and more so the second half. Davis the defender saved from Rashford scoring, then Loris pulled of a diving one handed save from Lukaku and a Mikhi attempt went between his legs and out to safety. Lukaku hit the post. All they had was the Ali miss. If they talk about that miss then so should they talk about the Valencia effort too and Lingaard miss.

Stop on.

The pundits were all jabbing the knife in before the match so it was good to see them all wriggle at full time, they'll use any excuse.

It might not have been the best performance but with our injuries at the moment plus coming off a loss at Huddersfield which could only have demoralised the team, I will take 1-0 all day.
