We've just won our first Euros in futsal after the best in the world went off injured and a sub scored the winner in extra time...

Champions of Europe in football and futsal. Incredible. Don't even care Benfica are winning.

Don't even watched the match, can I watch it back on RTP 1? Mind boggling, I was a huge futsal fan some years ago, always thought the fact Sporting or Benfica best players being foreign would make the NT worse.
 
Oh and I see that lovely bloke from Benfica Bruno Coelho scored the goal. :lol: Maybe Albuquerque will send him an SMS.

Knowing this isn't exactly a futsal thread I think UEFA should introduce some rules to the number of Brasilians in European National teams tbh.

Yup, also Italian teams are full of them, we and the Spanish sometimes have 1 or another, but those teams are the worst of all, sometimes you are playing against 5 brasilians at the same time, not very fair competition at all.

Wish there was more Futsal here in the U.S. especially since for a large portion of the country you can not play outside for half the year.

I think it would be liked, even if I can predict in the US they would like to adapt some rules to be more high scoring matches, and not so tactical as it is in Europe.

Coaches use it a lot these days, not necessarily futsal but playing in smaller pitches so the players have less space and have to make decisions faster. Kids here play with 7 players in a smaller pitch until they reach a certain age.

Also, futsal is played by everyone in school and most schools have a pitch so that helps too. I think it would be a success in the US too, it's played indoors and all you have to do is put 2 goals at each end of a basketball court so it wouldn't be hard to implement and the nature of the game is more exciting than football, there's more goals, more chances and it's more unpredictable.

I know that, but I would like to see it more with 5 vs 5 to compensate for the lack of street football and to improve decision making and creativity.
 
Honestly great to win the Futsal Euros after Football, but still believe more needs to be done regarding development of youth players in futsal, starting by coaching level.

In Belgium, u6 2 vs 2, u7 - u9 5 vs 5, u10 - u13 (i Think) 8 vs 8, above 11 vs 11. The pitch grows with the ages.
 
This weekend no changes at the top. All 3 contenders won their game.
 
Ah Sporting Clube actually won, I noticed it was 0-0 for ages but forgot to watch the end.

They're really struggling to keep up. This is Porto's title to lose really.

I think in Portugal they do some things, but still would like to see more creativity in young players, Belgium is a good example for us.

Nothing new, bar the fact Porto looks strong, Benfica improved a lot, and we played better today but we miss so many chances.

If you manage to not lose there in the end at Anfield can't see them with gas in the tank to support the pressing, one thing is to press high in Portugal, another 1 is doing that in the Champions League, they had better squads in the past, but Conceição is doing a great job with the players he has.

It was a strange game. First of all, we had a clean goal disallowed and clear pen not given which would have made the game far more easier. Second, we had about 10 real chances to score, our finishing was abysmal. We should have won confortably. Third, we got Gelson back picking up form and perhaps Bas Dost can return in the next game away to Tondela according to Jesus.

Our biggest problem is that we didn't use the january market to strengthen. We bought 2 players in Wendell and Misic that have made 0 impact atm, Rúben Ribeiro is at best a midtable player. Montero is still regaining form and Lumor can be an interesting player but he will only serve as back for Coentrão who has been one of our best players. We should have used the january market to really improve our team. Jesus is using a core of 13/14 players too heavily and when the Europa League returns and the number of games start increasing, we will have problems recovering. I actually think that, since Benfica is the only club just playing for the league, that they have the best chance to win. Sporting and Porto are still in the Cup, playing European football and that can make a difference in the run in for the title.
 
Bas Dost is a massive miss. He has little to his game other than finishing but he's obviously very good at that. Doumbia was a good striker a few years ago but seems to have been in semi retirement for a while now.

Indeed he is mate. I thought we would really miss Slimani but Dost has been incredible. About Doumbia, i haven't given up on him. He had some very good matches in the CL, then got injured and dropped with few chances. It's difficult to enter the team when he lacks playing time and is replacing a player with impact Dost has. I still think he can be an useful player. For example, we should use him for our away fixture at Astana. He is used to playing in those conditions and we can spare other more important players from playing this type of matches. Our main focus is the league. I don't want to give up on the Europa League but i'd play second string.
 
What the hell happened to Portuguese Football? Their strongest team got 0-5'd like they were school kids.

Can anyone explain this huge decline?

Money. Or the lack of it.
Our teams have always been poor specially relative to the big european leagues, but now with consolidated "rich" teams like the russian, ukrainian, turkish ones, and the skyrocket income of the big 5 league clubs we just cannot compete.
In the last years we have been punching above our weight with player transfers keeping us high up there allowing us to have bigger than normal wages, but Porto for example is having finantial fair play control now that's why we were not able to buy anyone in the summer.
We are not THAT bad, 0-5 at home was a mix of several factors, but say, we were able to get past our group when we were the poorest team for example and it was a decent group.
 
The right question is what happened with portuguese teams in Europe in previous years, with great performances and a couple of trophies won and finals. And what happened is miraculous given that the top portuguese teams have a budget comparable to an EFL championship side.

What is happening now is just normal I would say. Porto's entire squad cost about 40-50 M€ to assemble (if so much) while Liverpool, and other big clubs spend more in just one player. If Porto, Benfica or Sporting have a bad day against rich clubs they will be trashed, and that is what happened wednesday. Reaching the last 16 of UCL knocking out Monaco and Leipzig was already a victory for Porto.

I didn't see the whole game my stream fell away, but I don't think you have to make big conclusions after one game. Liverpool is after Man City the team in England who can really punish a team if they have their day and that is what happened. They go 1 - 0 up after a mistake of the goalkeeper. Then they score a second one and Porto went all in and Liverpool punished that. Football is also a lot of taking your moments what can make or brake the moral of the team and I think that was also a factor.

Azerbaijan vs France was hilarious in that regard

But yeah, other than Spain and Portugal, the other successfull countries are all built on brazilians. Think there were more brazilians than any other single country's players. And they call it "European" championship :lol:

Correct mate, very good post. Last 16, quarter finals appearences like the ones in recent years by Porto and Benfica is our level. We do better than other countries with similar dimensions, because of the competence of our managers/coaches/scouts but when the financial gap keeps growing it will be harder to replicate past achievements.

Not much a decline. The economical gap between the portuguese league and the English/Spanish/Italian/French league is quite a big reason for this. Our club's goals is to pass groups stage or get a 3rd place to go to Europa League. There will be the odd year, but nothing more than that.
