Portuguese Football 2017/2018

It was a strange game. First of all, we had a clean goal disallowed and clear pen not given which would have made the game far more easier. Second, we had about 10 real chances to score, our finishing was abysmal. We should have won confortably. Third, we got Gelson back picking up form and perhaps Bas Dost can return in the next game away to Tondela according to Jesus.

Our biggest problem is that we didn't use the january market to strengthen. We bought 2 players in Wendell and Misic that have made 0 impact atm, Rúben Ribeiro is at best a midtable player. Montero is still regaining form and Lumor can be an interesting player but he will only serve as back for Coentrão who has been one of our best players. We should have used the january market to really improve our team. Jesus is using a core of 13/14 players too heavily and when the Europa League returns and the number of games start increasing, we will have problems recovering. I actually think that, since Benfica is the only club just playing for the league, that they have the best chance to win. Sporting and Porto are still in the Cup, playing European football and that can make a difference in the run in for the title.

You bought the players that were possible to buy. Sporting, Porto and Benfica are all having financial issues. That's why Porto, for example, who has a huge squad depth problem (they have 14/15 above average players) and didn't try to hire anybody with real quality (except Gonçalo Paciência, but seriously), They said it was strategical, but we all know it wasn't. Same with Benfica: we need a GK and a B2B urgently, and nothing happened.

Azerbaijan vs France was hilarious in that regard

But yeah, other than Spain and Portugal, the other successfull countries are all built on brazilians. Think there were more brazilians than any other single country's players. And they call it "European" championship
At Sporting we have Merlin, Cavinato and Fortino who play for Italy but they look brasilians, but in Italy case is not even the worse because at least Italians do have a big community in Brasil or Argentina, now when you are playing against Russia, Azerbaijan or Kazakhstan is solely based on money.

What the hell happened to Portuguese Football? Their strongest team got 0-5'd like they were school kids.

Can anyone explain this huge decline?
Europa League is now our level, Champions League unfortunately today is restricted to the top 6 in England, Top 3 in Spain, Juventus in Italy, Bayern in Germany, PSG in France, sometimes you might get a Monaco, Shaktar, Besiktas or Zenit but they cannot win, simply put we don't have money to compete seriously at this level.

And any of those times alone have more than twice the budget of any pt teams

Has Martins hit a purple patch of form or has he finally turned a corner?

Since the start of 2018:

Minutes: 638
Goals: 2
Assists: 4
Goal or Assist Every 106mins

He's started to be more effective around goal this season but he's been tired for a few months and has been injured for a while too. We look like a completely different team when he's on the pitch but I still don't think he'll ever be good enough to start for one of the top teams in the world.

Europa League talent then? Or capable of stepping up to say a Tier 2 club in the Champions League?

It's a close fight in Liga NOS, Porto with a game in hand but could have a dip in confidence due to the Liverpool crushing.

Tier 2 club in the CL. He has to get rid of the inconsistency and improve the decision making but with top class manager perhaps he can evolve to an even better level. He showed his brilliance in games against Real Madrid and Juventus but he has to work on those issues i mentioned.

Benfica with a good win against Boavista 4 - 0. The last month they went in overdrive and are playing better football then before the winterbreak.
Totally different team, now.

Along side the pitch Sporting won also with the vote of confidence to their chairman and his direction. Hopefully they can do it also on the pitch and hope that the sportingados will keep quiet now but I bet they won't.

Porto with a huge 5-0 win against 5th placed Rio Ave. Confidence levels right back up and they look like the favourites for the title. If we don't win tomorrow it's pretty much over for us.

Guimarães :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Didn't see the game but result surprised me. Today Sporting away at Tondela. Estoril - Porto the second half will be played this week. Players who were not registerd at the time of the game can not play. Players who were on the pitch must play but if the coach wants to use somebody else he can but the players who was on the pitch can't be on the bench.

So yesterday Casillas was the GK but in the first half of the game at Estoril José Sa was the goalie. If the coach wants to play with Casillas José Sa can't be on the bench. Players that couldn't play because of injury and are fit now can be in the squad.

Sporting wins with 10 in Tondela with a last second goal. The great escape.

If Porto has some key player injured, they will loose points. Their squad is so thin that they really can't afford to miss any starting player.

Refereeing in this league is beyond a joke. Even VAR can't fix this shit, it's incredible. For all teams, the amount of mistakes they make is outstanding.

Huge game, Porto losing, they score an offside goal, it goes to VAR and they fecking miss it. How is that even possible? Porto now winning in Estoril and they'll most likely win the league.

Soares didn't touch the ball in the first goal it seems. From what i've seen recently, I guess the offside is only called if the player touches the ball? I don't know. Anyway, VAR's interventions are very inconsistent, and I don't think it has been very helpful this season

Telles injury is a major blow for Porto even with the win today. Best player of the squad in my opinion

It should have been an offside. Porto were still the better team and won fairly but it's annoying to see so much influence by the refs in the end result, same for our game during the weekend that should have never gone for as long as it did.

Porto now have the title in their hands. Even with Telles injured I don't think they'll feck it up.

Porto deserved the win but I forgot the starting hour and just watched the game just before Porto scored the second goal. Didn't see the equalizer. Referees in Portugal are questionable nothing new.

Since we're crap, at least an academista will win the league.

Don't undervalue Telles injury. He participates in more than 70% of all Porto goals. It is a terrible blow and they know it.

Any info about how long he will be out?
According to the media:
O lateral brasileiro está a contas com uma entorse no joelho esquerdo(...)

Now, it will depend on the degree of the injury. Looking at orthopedic info:
No Grau 1, o mais ligeiro, ocorre apenas um estiramento ligeiro do ligamento, no grau 2 verifica-se rotura parcial do ligamento e no grau 3 a rotura é total.

Alright. He should miss the match against Sporting though. It's a crucial match. If they win, they will practically have the title wrapped up. A draw will be decent for Benfica since they will only depend on themselves. A win at the "Luz" and Benfica surpasses Porto. For us it's a must win match.

Porto and Benfica with 2 good away wins especially the win of Porto 1 - 5 at Portimonense. Sporting needs 6/6 in the next 2 games home against Moreirense and away at Porto.

Absolutely fecking ridiculous call for that red card. This league is a disgrace, there's VAR and every single week teams win and lose points thanks to the refs.

Gelson is so fecking stupid, he was beyond terrible and then with the biggest game of our season on Friday he takes his shirt off and gets suspended. Moron. I don't care he scored the winner, disgraceful performance.

That was shocking at all levels by every single player, we have less balls than the Arsenal team that played yesterday. Bruno Fernandes was the only one that even cared about the result, the rest can feck off. Especially the ref.

Sporting wins with again a goal in the extra minutes. Not a great game but Sporting should have finished the game in the first half when they forgot to score when they had free shots on goal but didn't find the target. Gelson suspended for the game of friday.

How stupid is Gelson, really? He forgot he had a yellow?

Just saw it on Twitter, that's bizarre  what's the point of VAR if it's not going to overturn such ridiculous decisions as that? I mean in real time I can understand the ref giving a foul but one look at a replay and you can see what really happened

Yes the red card for Petrovic wasn't right. I don't know if VAR can interfere with that. VAR can only interfere in some specific occasions and I think that wasn't one of them.

Apparently VAR can only review it if it's a direct red card? That's what I understood from it which makes 0 sense.

It was an obvious wrong call that had a huge impact on the game.

I think I saw another game. Yes it was a stupid mistake from Gelson to take off his shirt but i think it was emotion/relief. But he, Bruno, Coates, Rui, Pinto were not that bad as you mention. I'm I wrong? I think your reaction was too much emotion. Sporting Clube is for the moment a coma patient and twice somebody wanted to pull the plug but at the end they changed their mind. But probably Friday game over.

Primarily, VAR can only be used for four match-changing situations:

1. Whether goals should stand

2. Penalty decisions

3. Direct red cards shown or not shown, although second yellow cards are not reviewable to draw a line

4. Mistaken identity, like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs against Chelsea in 2014.

That was definitely an emotional post

I was about to get an aneurysm from the lack of urgency we were showing and the ref wasn't helping. If we don't score that goal it means our season is over and yet we have pretty much all players not even chasing the ball around. It wasn't even like they were tired, Rafael Leão was 20 minutes on the pitch and he was the same. I honestly think I'm going to end up dying 20 years sooner than I would have if I didn't support this club.

Friday, we simply can't lose. A 0-0 draw is also a bad result because of the tiebreakers. A 1-1 or 2-2 draw is a better result as it means we'll finish above Porto if we end up with the same points. Hopefully we can replicate 2006/07 with that Tello freekick and steal the 3 points, that time we were playing without Liedson. Now we're playing without Gelson.

Gelson took off his shirt to show a message to Ruben Semedo saying 'with you until the end of the world' :wenger:

What better way to show support to Ruben Semedo than to act like an absolute idiot

I just want to say that you lose years of life watching Sporting. That is all.

B.Ruiz as #10?

People complaining about VAR should watch this game, supposedly a title game, to see if VAR is not indeed useful.

Doumbia just fell in the area, no penalty for me. The referee didn't stop the game then, only when the ball went out did he ask the keeper not to play it, so as he could watch the images. Pretty normal procedure.
