It's up to the club to then build on it. Fergie and United used our league cup win in 05 (Was it 05?) To give Rooney and Ronaldo their first trophy as the main men.
I know Ronaldo had the FA Cup win, but 05 was a new team/era.
If the club doesn't go on from there, then yes, a trophy isn't much on its own.

We're better than Spurs. As proven by the table. We won this game on our quality, not Spurs "bottling" it.

We're all clearly jealous. The Spurs revenues are at an all time high, they're going to have a new stadium to go back to. That is clearly much more important to the players than trophies and they'll stay forever, signing two decade long contracts, playing for free and rejecting offers from Barcelona and Madrid. They are on the way up with the best and most loyal manager under the most shrewd chairman, playing the best football with the best players. Fair enough, feck all to show for all of this but everyone secretly knows the truth which we are too ignorant to deny.
Well? What’s the point otherwise. Odds on them winning the league and CL are relatively low in the near future. They’ve won feck all for the past 30 years virtually and act like winning silverware is below them. You’ve got the best striker in the world and a decent supporting cast for what?
Standards are very different at Arsenal and Spurs (at least from the fans perspective). Arsenal win trophies so their concern, like us, is with trying to win a title or European glory.
I know we like to say this, but there are many examples of
1. Teams not springing on from domestic cup wins
2. Teams winning big trophies (league and CL) without the springboard of a cup win.
Our 2006 league cup transition to 3 PLs in a row was an anomaly imo.
To balance things, Poch has no right to look down on any trophy.
There was an element of it though. Their belief tanked after Sanchez goal. As soon as a question was asked of them their pressing became hesitant, their fullbacks were stuck in two minds while Dele and Son completely stopped showing for the ball
I don’t know. SAF certainly seemed to think the League Cup win in 2006 lit a fire in the younger players. They just wanted that feeling again and again. His words. Might be different for different players though.
They showed a little kid during the match who'd painted that on his cheek. Obviously tried to paint THFC on using a mirror.
Okay, to say it another way, surely a taste of success can make you want more. Yes it could go the other way, and some players will think they've made it and go all big time.
But with the right manager and attitude, a trophy win should make you hungry for more.
I know if I was at work and got a promotion or a pay rise because id worked hard, I'd continue working hard to try and get another. Not everyone is like that, I get that.
So maybe yes, a trophy isn't what they need. It's a winning mentality they need, and maybe a trophy could give them that.
Then we would be getting, "13 years without a trophy and out of the top 4" articles, comments and videos every 5 minutes.
What does any trophy do for any club?
Chelsea won the CL and have been pretty irrelevant in Europe since. Atletico won La Liga a few years ago and that was it pretty much. Ac Milan won the CL in 2007 and that's been it for them in European competition to this day, same with Inter.
Trophies increases a club's trophy cabinet and stock, it might not lead to future success (other factors are relevant here) but its still the feeling of winning silverware that fans, players and everyone involved in the club can cherish.
What will Spurs fans in the future have to look back on this era and point to (if they don't win anything)? That time Kane won the golden boot? Finishing above us?
Whereas we can look back and remember beating Chelsea in the cup, Ramsey's winner against Hull and thrashing Villa. The parades, the celebrations, all of it.
As for the effect its had, look at us, we've been awful in the league since 2014. Yet we've won two more cups, been to the final of another and are in the semi-finals of a European competition. Once you have that experience of competing for and winning trophies, it starts to become routine.
Before that fa cup win, we hadn't made a semi final since 2011 (League Cup) and the fa cup semis since 2009.

Are you kidding? It’s an amazing day when you win a trophy, the three FA Cups have each been incredible experiences. The Prem and CL are obviously levels above but winning trophies are what it’s all about. Hard to beat those days for fans, particularly those attending a cup final.
I'd be surprised if they've ever been to a cup final. It tends to be armchair fans that downplay the value of trophies. I've been to one cup final that will be in my memory for the rest of my life. It is a special occasion.

Davinson Sanchez has won the Copa Libertadores though (South American CL)
Alderweireld has a La Liga title, though he wasn't a starter due to Atletico having the best defensive partnership in Europe at that point
And it depends on whether you rate the league cup over the 3 successive Eredivisie titles won by Eriksen, Alderweireld and Vertonghen(2).

Not to mention winning a trophy or two keeps the players relatively happy in the short term - a reward for their efforts so to speak. For Spurs this is of paramount importance since they cannot afford to offer their players a fat salary, the likes of which the richer clubs most certainly can.
The FA Cup may not be the most sought after trophy in terms of prestige, but for a club like Spurs who haven't won a trophy in over a decade, it could be used as a springboard to further success. They are still yet to cross the finish line under Poch, so I found his pre-match comments suggesting that 'winning this game isn't important' quite bewildering.
This is the kind of comment Glaston can't resist. He's reading it now, fingers frozen over the keys, battling the urge to make some pompous comment about how unfounded the idea is...
Personally I think that the NFL income from the new Spurs stadium is overplayed...
Good post. I will never understand any "Fans" who downplay trophies.
Perhaps the full automated sprinkler coverage will make them stick around, you just don't get that in many stadiums.

I've said it so many times, but there's something within the fabric of that club that causes a certain mentality for them to never win anything. It's just been too many times to keep saying, 'they just got beat by the better team on the day'.
It's always that they get beat when they're nearly there, and it's gone on for many, many years.
They've done well to cling on to Kane, Eriksen, Alli and Pochettino for this long, but I think now is the time for Spurs fans to get realistic that a few of these will be off this Summer, or in the coming January...
And who can blame them at this point?
The 'project' stuff is now, at this point, utterly laughable as a reason for them to be staying. And if they seriously have ambitions of actually winning trophies they will know now that it is simply not possible to do that with Spurs.
This is the strongest set of players Spurs have had in decades, coupled with possibly their best manager as well, and yet the momentum from a few seasons ago when they first put in a title challenge has now completely fizzled out.
You could see in that game today that their mentality just broke as the 2nd half went on - they didn't believe they were gonna get to that final and win that beautiful trophy and you could see it in them.
And this was at a ground that they've had as their home for the whole season!

We've kind of waited for this to happen for a couple of years now, but this summer (or the next one, after their MASSIVE stand is unveiled) might just be the nail in the coffin. Eriksen, Kane, Vertonghen, Alli and Alderweireld probably knows deep down by now that it's not going to happen for them at Spurs.

Not buying it. Go to the recent Wenger threads and see how much those recent FA cup wins are valued (FYI, I give him credit for those).
Again, a trophy is a trophy, and Spurs would be better off with any. But let's not pretend as if the importance of said trophies is variable on who's winning it. No one would value Pochettino much better or put Spurs on the next level if they won a bunch of FA Cups and Carling Cups. And like you've admitted, the "springboard" effect is not the norm, but more of an exception.
