Zinedine Zidane | Resigns

Am I right in saying he's never won a domestic cup, either as a player or a manager?

He won the league with Real.

I hope he goes on to manage the French NT and leads them to WC/EC glory.

Surprised. Despite winning three Champions League titlea on the bounce, he could have still done a lot better in the league. Very surprised by his decision.

Be interesting to see where he goes. Maybe Chelsea. He's always spoken about his admiration for Hazard. Either that or Juve, I guess.
He doesn't strike me as someone who'd take part in the manager merry-go-round.

I think it could have something to do with the manner in which he quit football as a player. Disgraceful, shameful, embarrassing. It broke him to pieces. Now he's walking away from a coaching job as one of the greats in the business, after winning the CL title back to back to back. That's what you call full circle.

Great point.

I doubt it. We never saw much of Zidane in England, only CL and International stuff but he was sent off 14 times in his career.

12 of those sending's off were due to provocation (his words), which normally resulted in him stamping, elbowing and headbutting someone, and they usually happened in big games with lots of pressure.

Zidane was undoubtedly one of those players who played on the edge, always on the verge of doing something reckless, Rooney in his hay day is a good comparison. We don't remember him as that kind of player because he always looked so calm, calculated and in control, he played like a Roles Royce but was never far away from a red most of the time.

Managing isn't the same as playing so I'm not surprised he has resigned in this way. He's a classy operator.

Zidane not looking for another club? I'd be more than surprised if we didn't approach him during the season if things don't improve by Christmas.

Are you a United fan? “If things don’t improve”. The United team has improved a lot since Mourinho arrived. Finished 2nd for the first time since SAF.

Can they sack Deschamps now and install ZZ.. you know he'd fecking win it, too.

Calm down. Was merely speculating that if Mourinho spends £200m this summer and we still play badly, the fans/media get on his back and rumours of discontent continue, it wouldn't be a surprise if Ed approached Zidane during the season. You know he loves this kind of appointment.

Yeah Zidane wasn't broken by his exist at all, which pissed a lot of people off in France.

What’s incredible to think is,

he’s just as much of a legendary player as he is manager. Incredible!

Talk about a bolt from the blue! I reckon he might end up at Juve one day somewhere down the line, but for now he's probably going to take a lot of time off, and nobody can say he doesn't deserve it. Went out at his peak.

Without a doubt!

While we're on the subject, I'm a Jose fan (always have been) but I'd replace him with Zizou tomorrow without a moment's hesitation.

Would completely destabilize the team doing that. Much better to suss out Zidane to succeed Mourinho.

Maybe now we won't blow £200m on Bale. Hopefully, the new manager won't like Ronaldo! But how long until SS is linked with the United job?!

Bale and Ronaldo being so vocal about not being happy after a final was weird but maybe this is a deeper insight into what they weren't happy about.

You may be slightly exaggerating the situation there mate, I mean, managerial changes occur on a regular basis within football, you would have to assume the players would adjust with relative ease. That said, I'd be happy to hold on to Jose for another year at least, especially if it meant Zizou would be his eventual replacement. But not at expense of losing him to another club beforehand.

I expect Conte to leave Chelsea at anytime too, there's been some huge jobs open already this summer.

Arsenal, Chelsea (probably), PSG, Real Madrid, Napoli

Big changes next season.

Yes, Zizou was a wild one with a calm exterior.

My post was just a speculation anyway.I was just wondering if the two events were linked in his mind.

It's like Guardiola at Barca isn't it? He also felt the club needed a change, and called it a day.

Managerial changes occur quite organically. A manager resigning or being sacked is generally a culmination.

The board are obviously backing Mourinho, and have laid the groundwork to sign the players he wants. To then get Zidane and burden him with these players or worse trying to get the players he wants in such a short time would make his job very difficult.

If we have been working on Zidane for the past few months and he has already let us know what players he wants then I would absolutely be for him coming tomorrow. But from the looks of things Zidane has resigned very suddenly.

It would be a surprise, as ZZ would be a big gamble and Ed wants to avoid gambles. He is looking for sure things, now.
We previously tried bringing in a manager who likes to build a team for the long haul (and that failed).
We then went and got a World Class manager, who had never managed in England and had not managed a club side for a while (that failed).
Ed then went and got Jose - proven World Class manager who had won the league 18 months earlier, in England. A serial winner. We wanted trophies, so we got Jose.
ZZ would be someone who has never built a team from scratch and someone who has never managed in a competitive league, where it not inconceivable that you can lose to the side who is bottom of the league.
As long as Jose is winning (or coming very close to) winning trophies, he shall remain as manager.
