"Blackface" Discussion

Absolutely disgusting.

And this idea that what China is doing in Africa is a positive thing is nothing but propaganda too - some Africans may be too ignorant to realise, but they are exploiting our raw minerals in exchange for basic infrastructure and government contracts and not even employing local people to do the work so they can learn - but rather shipping in their own local tradesmen (at least in Ghana, can’t speak on other countries)

This whole thing is a joke and mockery of black people. Ffs.
Same in Nigeria.

It's the getting the black guy to play a monkey that gets me.
They can go feck themselves.

Same in Mauritius. They even built their own little town.

@17 Van der Gouw no worries :)
I would say that the effect of racism isn’t felt on any isolated singular incident.
What I mean is that, seeing blackface isn’t the singular cause of any change in mood I may feel - but rather the fact that blackface is still *a thing* is added on top as part of a culmination of everything to do with racism.

Ultimately living with racism isn’t about the individual insults or mistreatment you get - it’s a continual reminder that the way you look is enough for someone to treat you differently, and it’s not always a bad thing, but it becomes a burden to carry. I couldn’t tell you the last time I went to a new environment where I wasn’t conscious of my race, and how I would be perceived, even as a child.
I’ve said before that it’s similar to having anxiety 24/7, with no medication help.
Ultimately that becomes traumatic over time, I would say that’s the hardest part to try and get across to someone who doesn’t understand - living as a minority in society is traumatic, and across the spectrum of trauma you have individuals who deny it, others who deal with it, others who can’t handle it etc.

For me personally, I see blackface and I’m disappointed but not surprised. These things don’t anger or hurt me anymore because I’ve become numb to people mocking black people for the way we look, and equally I’ve grown tired of people denying black people the right to be hurt/upset/offended at something, when that something doesn’t affect them.

That's fecking terrible... Makes me sad to hear and I don't even know you. I'm in no way saying I know that feeling you're describing but I've felt that racism or rather ethnocentrism when certain people think and act as their culture and values are superior in every way to yours.

My job takes me all over the world and in certain places that feeling is overwhelming in the way they interact with me. Without saying it in words they question my education, experience, knowledge, even values just because of my nationality. That pisses me off to no end.

But wouldnt wearing a ghostbuster costume be enough of an indication that you were impersonating a ghostbuster?

If I wanted to impersonate Stevie Wonder as a white man I could just wear a glitzy jacket, a pair of sunglasses and copy his manerisms and just sing "Isnt she lovely" if someone asked me who I was supposed to be. Wouldnt that make it obvious?

No, that would be a shit costume without getting the black skin, mate.

Aren't there laws against this? I would imagine in many jurisdictions this would be considered a hate crime.

What else can you expect from a town called "Wagga Wagga"...

NSW has racial discrimination laws and racial vilification laws so I doubt that this would be illegal even if it is idiotically offensive especially given the appalling treatment of aboriginal people in that region over the years.

Wagga is a derivative of the local Aboriginal name meaning crow. Wagga Wagga therefore mean place of many crows or something like that. There are no racist overtones to it as far as I know.

Fair enough. I lived in Queensland and while i genuinely loved Australia and the people there, I was someone surprised to encounter racism in the smaller towns and remote locations. The further afield of a big city I would go the more frequent and open the racism would be.

While I don't know anything about Wagga Wagga, it sounds rural so I'm not surprised that this event would have occurred in a more rural place, based on my experience in the country.

Surprised?! I spent 18 months living in QLD and the place was fecking over-run with racist/homophobic rednecks. This was a while ago, mind you. When Pauline Hanson was their member of parliament. Might have changed in the last 20 years. I doubt it.

I lived there 5 years ago. It's probably improved since 18 years, especially in the urban centers, but it is still very much a problem.

Pauline was voted out and then put in prison for electoral fraud. After year out of politics she resuscitated One Nation ad got back in s a Senator in 2013 with 3 other One Nation senators who held or more or less held the balance of power in the upper house.

Of course the usual infighting and idiocy took hold quite quickly and she is down to herself and one other senator now and will probably be gone at the next election.

Rural NSW is very different from rural Queensland. And by very different I mean less racist and on average a bit more sophisticated. Even QLD has improved in the last 20 years albeit it from a very low starting point. And rural NSW is far from being racism free.

Most of the idiots at that party are from big cities who didn't get the grades to go to a top end Sydney Uni so it will be mainly brainless idiocy rather than rural racism. Possibly even partly playing up to the rural stereotype. The fecking idiots may well get kicked out of Uni.

Yesterday she got up in parliament and had a go at The Greens for not doing anything about homelessness - a core issue for The Greens.

Hansen: When was the last time you raise a motion about homelessness?
Greens: Yesterday but you didn't bother turning up to vote.

Another recent classic was her trying to explain why she hasn't flip-flopped on company tax cuts: "I said no originally, then I said yes. Then I have said no, and I've stuck to it."

Halloween is coming so that means one thing. Cue the avalanche of blackface stories- two today alone.

So the two examples recently posted i don't find racist at all. If anyone does and is willing to explain why I'm all ears.

Same in Nigeria.
Yes but I work in this sector... The Chinese government put the money up with long periods of below market interest rates that no commercial bank (and most other governments can't) the trade off is they insist on a % of that spend to be with Chinese companies

In fairness UK export finance and the same vehicles throughout europe Do the same.. they may demand less UK content but typically want higher interest and payments to start sooner

Depending on the project the Chinese offer is sometimes the best one on the table (sometimes the only one) so not too surprising they structure it to their own benefit.

Going off topic but do people expect the Chinese to just give away their money without asking for anything in return? I think the deals they are proposing are far superior to what the West has done to the African continent for the past 100 or so years.

Well, Then I did not understand what the negative concept of the blackface is. So if one day me and my friends wants to impersonate ghostbusters we can´t if because none of us is black?

I thought blackfacing it was more a generalization and/or why put a blackfaced actor if there was black people to do the acting and/or making that the blackfaced person was represented dumb and inferior

You can if you don't mind portraying yourself as an insensitive, racist idiot.

A shit deal is still a shit deal even if there have previously been shitier deals.

You mean colonialism?
