Day 10: Belgium vs Tunisia, South Korea vs Mexico and Germany vs Sweden

I'm Pakistani and have never stepped foot in Germany but I've supported Germany since '96.

What's made me invested really was the period where Germany were poor and weren't winning anything, stuck by them throughout that period (with all the ridicule from my Brazil supporting brother and cousins) and that only grew my support for them.

I would dare you to find a more avid German supporter than me :D

Fair play to you for sticking through their tough times of making the final of the World Cup and the Euopean Championship alongside other semi final appearances.

That's true dedication.

Sweden always play like this in major tournaments, they just have less quality upfront than in previous tournaments when a Larsson, Ljungberg or Zlatan could create a goal out of nothing.

Guess they used up the 50 yard goals in qualifying. ;)
Even if they didn't really go for the winner, why did they seem more nervous when Boateng got sent off ? It doesn't make sense

When exactly was this? The worst they've done in a world cup since 1978 has been the quarter finals, with their 3 wins well spaced out, and Euro 96 in there too

Between the 1990 and 2006 tournaments was a terrible period for German football.

Do the maths one more time. Remember to count the new goal difference for both teams ;)
just going off the BBC site .

Utter capitulation and cowardice from the Swedes cost them. Was rooting for them to get the winner but they threw it in the bin. Bastards.

For sure the Germans will go far in the tournament now, maybe even win the damn thing.

They are better. They are favorites. Its not about confidence. But this game is not gonna happen in the round of 16.

Trouble with Brazil just playing out a draw v Serbia is all it takes is a left sided free kick to be awarded in 90th minute 25 yards from goal and Kolarov running up....You can't tell me the whole of Rio/Sao Paulo wouldn't be holding their breath at that point.

Brazil needs to start putting in some commanding performances. Think you'll beat Serbia by two goals so Swiss would need to win by 5 I think to top the group.

Can't believe Sweden didn't see that out for a draw.
Against 10 men, yet playing like they were outnumbered.

Dreadful lunge in by the defender late on, and even the commentator knows where that free kick was going.

Yes, this is today's table, so a 1-0 for Sweden would give both teams +1 in the final table (Sweden from 0 to +1, Mexico from +2 to +1)

Miranda-Thiago Silva might get exposed in knock outs. Surprised Marquinhos has dropped out of contention as he's been a regular last 18 months and gives Brazil extra pace in the back 4.
I dont trust Thiago Silva. He is mentally weak. Both CBs are good with the ball but too soft. I would play Marquinhos as RB.

Half those crosses the Germans did today would be goal against Brazil. But its a team that is better in counter attack with space, so its possible that it can work against top sides, who knows.

They probably felt more confident of getting the draw and so felt they had more to lose.

It's not that different to when a team is just defending v a Barca/PSG, those teams get someone sent off and the other team continues to just defend.

Sweden would then be ahead of Mexico on the head-to-head record.

But that's my point, I don't mind that they didn't go for the win. Just be a little less nervous and defend standing, not like that asshole.

Man Germany are going to make me shave a few years off my life. If they can actually get their balance right, they might actually do something this world cup.

Evra really is a legend. Love him.

What did he say/do?

I started supporting them because of the Euro 96' final, so my support started after their last triumph for another 18 years  The worst period for the German team.

Though from 2006 it's been amazing because the football has been great and we were generally a great team, but from 2002 to 2005 we were really bad. I remember there was a period in that time where he hadn't beaten a top 10 team in friendlies or competitive matches.

I dont think its impossible that both Brazil and Germany still finishing as top in their groups.

Sweden were playing like they were the team with 10 men - they looked absolutely awful in the last 10 mins and had chances to both slow the game down and even win it.

The moment Germany got that freekick I said to myself, 'they'll score from this', and they did. And they deserved it.

Germany had terrible teams at Euro 2000 and 2004, they drew 1-1 with Lativa in 2004.

I know they reached final in 2002 but they had nearly as much luck as South Korea in the knock outs. Against USA Lahm handled the ball on the line at 0-0 but no penalty was given.

Germany may celebrate tonight, but most likely they'll still only get second, meaning one heck of a face off with Brazil next round.
Pending Switzerland beating Costa Rica by more than 2 goals more than Brazil beat Serbia

Brazil will finish top of their group.

Mexico deserve to top their group for their level in both games. Would be a bit of a scandal tbh if Germany finish top given the respective performances. I don't see Mexico losing to Sweden.
