Day 17: France-Argentina, Uruguay-Portugal.

The closest he'll come to goat is through the advertisements.

Ronnie has done the business in the last 4 years to overtake him.

And this is coming from a Messi fan who thought he was goat a few years ago.

There is no goat for everyone or forever. For you it is Ronaldo, for him it is Messi, for Beckenbauer it is Pele. If it is Ronaldo for you, fine.

This version is better

May the laurels be eternal
that we knew how to win,
that we knew how to win.
Let us live crowned with glory...
or swear with glory to die!
Or swear with glory to die!
Or swear with glory to die!

But I'd put the Leonas one, they are better to look at :D

Wait so are we picking anthems or football teams

O.K I will edit to make things easier....

Does a mod have to change the thread title or can you do that yourself?

Edit: Found the tool.

It was just a personal one as they're probably my favourite four anthems in the competition left so quite cool they're all playing each other. Plus I'll probably enjoy watching Uruguay-Portugal sing them more than watching the actual game.

I'll go back to the normal team names for other days if no one else has started a thread.

Haha, nah, personally, I think it will be enjoyable in some ugly way. Scraping, elbowing, biting, trying to send someone out, someone actually getting a red, close game and a late drama. Looking forward to the game actually.

You forgot all the squares drawn in the air by the players to the ref after every event.

I want Argentina and Uruguay to go through. Nothing to do with the Messi/Ronaldo stuff. I just want a south american team to win it this time if England doesn't.

Really? I'd love to see a Ronaldo - Messi showdown in the QF!
I hate Argentina so really couldn't give a shit if Messi plays or not in a QF.

Besides I think Uruguay have a little too much street awareness over Portugal

Portugal parking the bus for 120 minutes. Suarez fouls Ronaldo on the last minute. Ronaldo scores. Running towards the crowd in celebration, he takes off his shirt revealing another one with I LOVE THIS GAME on it.

Argentina XI vs France: Armani, Mercado, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico, Mascherano, Enzo Perez, Banega, Pavon, Messi, Di Maria

France to win with a brilliant extra time goal from Fekir, who then proceeds to celebrate madly with Pogba, fuelling the Fekir to United rumours.

I can't fathom anyone (outside of their own nation not participating or having been knocked out) wanting the narrative of Messi winning the WC with Argentina to not happen. As a completion of a great story, it is absolutely the best possible outcome for footballing neutrals. In decades to come, it will be more regrettable that a generational talent like Messi doesn't win the WC. Even the most ardent of critics, deep down, will want Messi to achieve this great feat with Argentina. Football is nothing, if not, about stories. My heart says Argentina, but my head says France with their quality, yet, we still yet say Argentina, because, in these things you cannot split heart and head.

Yeah nah, I'd quite like the story of him retiring again instead :devil:

There are many great players who never won the WC: Di Stefano, Cruyff, Puskas, Cristiano, Platini, Zico, Baresi...

Why do I have to cheer for Argentina or Messi? Can't I cheer for Colombia or England or Belgium if I'm a neutral? Don't understand this absolutist attitude.

We have some poets here.

Poets don't win titles;)

Di Maria shouldnt be playing. I dont know where the goal threat should come from, Messi or some lucky corner goal. Could have played Dybala on the wing, as Messi moved to the false forward role

Di Maria  reckon he would start even if he scored a hattrick of own goals.....

78 minutes played as a winger and Pavon still only succesfully completed one fake-cross trick. Earns starting position...

Pavon and Di Maria to try to take advantage of France's fullbacks makes sense but a country with Higuain, Aguero and Icardi can't go into a WC round of 16 and play without a striker.

You don't have to, but in the case of Messi, unfortunately, whether valid or not, his career is seen as a direct comparison to Diego Maradona, and therefore, the necessity on him achieving this has a precedent that perhaps some of those other names didn't necessarily have to burden, singularly.

Looking at the lineups, i would be surprised if France dont win with ease. An easy 2-0 win without doing much

What is Di Maria doing in the starting line up?

Aguero and Higuain benched? What does Messi want to achieve with that line up?:wenger:

Looks to me like a false nine role for Messi, ala Barcelona under Pep. Probably trying to get Messi the ball in more dangerous areas further up the field.

Giroud must have nudes of Deschamps. There's no other explanation. He's an alright finisher with zero pace. Most average player in that French squad.
