England Discussion | Finish 4th

Why not match them up 442 and blow them away. There’s too little creativity for my liking and Sweden are very well drilled.

That's what you said about Kane. I told you that Ronaldo is more focused, more dedicated and more driven than Kane. Are you going to argue with that?

Yes. Kane is every bit as focused, dedicated to improvement and driven as Ronaldo … I absolutely stand by that.

Get ready for another long one vs Sweden. Cannot see that ending in 90 minutes.

Big win for England tonight.

I think we will win this, hopefully they don’t use the shithouse tactics the Columbians did.

England took the leg of the gas in the 2nd and in OT but overall a deserved win especially given ton of shithousery from Colombia.

Brilliant. Most likeable England team in decades, and now the only England team in history who are actually competent from the spot.

England had to win that shoot out really, whole nation would've been broken considering it was last minute equaliser. Key penalty was the Colombian guy hitting the bar at 3-2 up, gave England another life.

In fairness all the penalties were good. Henderson's wasn't that bad, Ospina just read his run up (note to De Gea) so certainly progress for future ones.

Now for Sweden. Way to beat them is to score first surely? Trying to think of last time Sweden were actually behind in regular international before 90 minutes and can't think of one!

They are very tough to beat if ahead. It could be extra time again tbh as England created little from open play.

I’d have taken QF before this all began to be honest, great chance to push on a bit further but Sweden are no mugs by any stretch.

Oh and it’s coming home

Then you're deluded. Ronaldo arguably surpassed one of the most naturally talented players to ever grace the pitch through sheer will. Come back when Kane wins 4 Balon dors and 5 Champions Leagues through sheer will.

When was the last England was in the quarters of WC, 2006?
Yes, the last time we won a knockout tie at any tournament until today

Cant wait for you lot to underestimate us as usual (despite our recent results).

Gonna be a great game nonetheless, always enjoy facing you as I have some ties to the UK.

This is one crazy WC, big teams going out, Croatia passed a knockout tie 1st time since 1998 and England won a penalty shootout. :)

Sweden are near impossible to beat if you guys go a goal up. When was the last time you were behind in a proper game before 90 minutes? Great defensive unit and I imagine you will be more clever at corners than other teams have been with England.

Lol … the Ballon d'or and CL trophies are not awarded on the basis of focus, dedication and drive - there are many other factors that come into play, not least the players you are surrounded with when it comes to CL trophies …. so don't try and drag extraneous factors in it.

You can see it in Kane and the history of his development: the relentless determination to improve, to learn, the huge amounts of time he spends practising every aspect of his game, the mental strength, the sheer ice-cold professionalism, the hunger to succeed.

Going to win anything at club level anytime soon?

Trophyless players don't win the Ballon d'or I'm afraid.

I think Vardy/ Rashford sub for sterling aoround 60mins was in order today. We might have hit them on the counter

This is a silly argument and I'm not even going to get into the semantics of it but I think that does a great disservice to Ronaldo tbh. Ronaldo has unbelievable force of will and drive but is also an insanely talented talented player and has been ever since he was a spotty teen.

Really glad we got through a shootout and I liked Southgate's responses after the match about not underestimating Sweden in the next round. And I don't think we will, whether we end up getting through or not.

It's the England thread, and we have @GlastonSpur being all blinkered talking about a Spurs player.

No wonder people hate Spurs in the Caf. I'm one of the minority who like them but it's possible that'll change if I see another blinkered post.

Nothing like changing the subject is there …. the Ballon d'or wasn't the point under discussion.

Don't want to bring a brilliant summer's evening down but I'm not totally convinced by Southgates love for an injured Dele Alli. We effectively played with ten men against Tunisia and scraped through and did exactly the same again tonight.

If a player is injured, just replace him. Leaving him on ruins the team dynamic. Loftus would have made a bigger difference in normal time.

Anyway rant over. We should beat Sweden. It will be cagey but they're worse than Colombia. And Colombia were shit.

Congratulations to all English caftards on here. Good mental strength to get through. I don't like the fact how tough it was for you to beat James-free Colombia and I think you deserved to concede after you let them have 3 dangerous headers in the last 10 minutes. However, as I said previously, you beat them, you have to be taken seriously now.

Chuffed for Young (good game), Lingard and Rash (showed nerves to go there and take the peno). Fingers crossed for the remainder.

Everyone accused England of underestimating Colombia but that was proven false. England will not underestimate Sweden either.

What are you talking about? The things you said can be said about most footballers. Most of them have incredible drive and will to constantly improve.

Yeah and you win Balon dor by being the best in the world. By winning biggest trophies. Lets see Kane move to Madrid and show the same drive to be the best.

We're going to beat Sweden easily and make the SEMI'S. Who can believe it we'd make the fking semis??? Southgate is a magician!!!

I'm blinkered when it comes to Kane? He's the best striker in the world, bar none (and he's only going to get better) … and what's more, it's those who deny it who are the ones who are the blinkered, largely because he doesn't play for their club.

Yeah his undying backing of Alli who looks a shadow of the player he normally is, is weird and dumb. Take him off sooner at least. Only real criticism I have the man at the moment.
