England Discussion | Finish 4th

Before the game, Sweden were supposed to be a tough test and England would get find out.

After the game, Sweden are rubbish and England were lucky to have drawn them.

The negativity will fit whatever situation we find ourselves in. For some, the truth is less important than their bitterness.

I said this a few days before:

Congratulations on being in the semi final! Columbia was a much harder opponent to play so you'll win this comfortably.

And this is the response I got:

This post just comes across as extremely bitter more than anything else. I hope it is sarcasm, because it's not true at all.

Some people just like being negative

England look solid and deservedly won. Hope they win the semi if they play Russia.

Have been lucky with the draw though: to reach a WC semi by beating Tunisia, Panama, Colombia (without their best player) and Sweden is to have, well, luck.

Wow! Semi final of WC. Second time in my life, I’d guess the first time for some posters on here. Just brilliant...

England in a semi final. I can't believe it. First time in my lifetime and the same for many others I'm sure. Proud of them no matter what happens now although it will be gutting not to make the final now.

Yep, first time for me. Loving every minute of it now that England aren't misusing or verbally abusing United players.

Was this a problem when Portugal had an easier route to the final in 2016? Or Germany in 2002?

I certainly accept England have had easy run in knock outs but why all these posts saying draw should be restructured and stuff like that? It's a major tournament, these things happen and draws can easily open up if a favourite falls early.

England still got to likely beat 2 of Croatia and France/Belgium so that's going to be tough enough given some of the defensive weaknesses.

They basically lost on purpose to engineer a route to a final. That is a flaw in the draw.

Great win for you English today! Pulling hard for you guys.

I will say that I maintain my long time view that Rashford > Sterling. Sterling always seems to just lack that last bit of quality. He's the fastest of players but really is below average at finishing and passing/vision.

I remember 1990. These lads have far exceeded expectations this time. It’s ok for England fans to celebrate!

They didnt lose on purpose... them and Belgium did the same. Rotate in a dead rubber game. The only difference in drawing before/after is knowing who you'll play, but at the same time, that's the only way it can be done logistically. To win it, which is what matters in the end, you have to beat the best anyway. Those who get to the final have beat teams who have beat other top teams, so they have something about them.
Basically, the draw is fine.

Really hoping for an England v Belgium final now.

Agree to disagree then. Regarding the Belgium match, both rotated but one tried to win it. It’s become taboo to do anything other than laud England and I completely understand the fans excitement. But this route to the final, coming via a deliberate defeat, is cheapening a great tournament in my opinion.

I am actually over the moon. First time in my life I've seen us reach the World Cup semis.

Midweek is going to be nerve shredding no matter which team we get.

Croatia's midfield could completely destroy us.
Russia will be a case of home advantage and an entire country behind them.

Neither would be easy.

Semi-final will be on ITV

Russia would be much easier. Yeah they're home but against them you are big favourites as you're a much better side. Better side doesnt always win, I'm sure nobody actually thinks Russia are better then Spain but they won in the end despite barely having the ball. England isnt as good as Spain in possession, but the game would be around the same IMO. Dominant, and should win it with the chances you get. Against Croatia, it's much more 50/50 in terms of talent and team potential.

@RedSky

Maybe were all just hallucinating :D

I believed! To be fair, i've watched pretty much every match (think i've missed 3 of them) so had a pretty good idea of each teams ability.

Tonights match is hard to call though given there's the home crowd advantage. Although that didn't really help them when they lost 3-0 earlier in group stages so expecting Croatia to win relatively easily tonight. Shame, could do with being extra time :p

Think Russia will win tbh. Home advantage is massive.

I think Russia’s gameplan will be similar to last Sunday - concede possession, defend deep and hit on the counter. It’s hard to see lightening strike twice though - Croatia to win 2-0.

Is this the worst ever world cup semifinalist ? South Korea made it once right? But they cheated their way through it.

Ridiculous thing to say. England have been good in the tournament so far and there’s no need to resort to cheeky remarks like this to discredit their results but I reckon you cannot give England any credit.

Oh yeah it's obvious Croatia are the better team, but home advantage counts for so so much. I think I'm leaning towards Russia as a preference but it would still be an absolute nerve shredding game.

Sweden were rubbish today*. We did our worst performance since we lost against Bulgaria in the WC-qualification. We were TERRIBLE. If we played like this against Switzerland or even Mexico i don't think we would have won those matches.

It's sad how you support a team from England, yet despise the country? Some weirdos in this forum.
It's just funny watching England crash out every tournament.
How do you feel about the overhyping that the Croatian media is doing?
I don't know what the Croatian media are saying about their team, so I have nothing to say in regards to that. I can't imagine it's any worse than the English press.
Why are they cnuts?
I dunno. I just use the word cnut a lot really, not necessarily that the English are cnuts although I do dislike some of their players.

Anyone but Englander's are so laughable bitter.

Predict England getting knocked out at every stage, then when they win there's always a reason that actually, it was luck, or undeserved, and they'll get found out next time. Keep moving the goalposts lads, funny to watch you all squirm.

They hate everything English but support an English club. :wenger:

Loving the bitterness in here. Did none of you lot cheer when Lingard scored in the fa cup final?
Or Teddy in the cl final?

I’m going to go full Kevin Keegan soon enough, and you never go full Keegan.
