It's not unreasonable to suggest a central midfielder should have a larger output to be the best in the world especially when Messi, Ronaldo and Salah were all smashing it.
His game isn't based on goals and assists, but he's right, theres no way he was the best player in the world last year. He wasn't even that good at the world cup. Only got voted as one of the best players because he was the most well known player Croatia had.

Too bad he never came to United, but look at that career and list of honors, well-deserved. Top bloke as well, you don’t see him talking shit in the media or jumping on the refs every game. Was Modric that good for Real Madrid? Most times I watched them their midfield got overran. He is only winning this because of the world cup. Ronaldo was more important in the CL and that's the pinnacle. Top scorer again with 14 goals. 6th consecutive season top scoerr I believe.

In his own position there is Toni Kroos, Thiago, De Bruyne, David Silva, Pjanic who are close to him. You could argue some of them are currently better.
First things first, longevity is not important in a yearly award. Second, they haven't been "clearly" the best players in every single year if you give importance to the World Cup like they used to do back in the days for Ballon D'or voting.
Even when you factor in the World Cup they still have been clearly better than everyone every year. And the World Cup should not be the sole factor in these contest since it happens once every 4 years and at most it will only be 7 matches.
If that is the case why limited it on two players? It is clearly that best player last 10 years is Messi. So he should get award every year. No matter how many goals he scores. He is the best player in general.

Well everyone has his own definition of being the best. In my book you can't be the best if you have zero influence at SF and Final stage of UCL and in QF/SF/Final of the World Cup, which is true for them both this year.

So far this season Modric hasn’t even been one of the 3 best Real Madrid midfielders ffs... If you’re going to give the World Cup this level of importance in comparison to the other competitions so Modric wins it then Varane, Hazard, Griezmann and Perisic should be the rest of the top 5.

When did he shine in the Champions League last season? It was poor performance one after the other from the entire Madrid midfield... the second half of the final were the only good minutes he played in the entire knockouts.
He was clearly A LOT better in the previous year yet somehow got nowhere near the recognition he’s getting now.
1. Who exactly is he popular with? Teenage girls do not count.
2. Barcelona and Real Madrid have been the juggernauts of world football over the last decade, with Ronaldo and Messi their faces. How could Neymar win it without being the main man while at Barcelona and without doing anything of note at PSG.
3. (Regarding it being a popularity contest) Sneijder and Ribery not winning it due to Messi and Ronaldo tearing Getafe a new one in the corresponding seasons was a joke.

This debate only matters for those who see the Ballon D'Or as some sort of validation.
How about we factor in everything. Technology has marched on. With TV and internet almost every match can be viewed we do not need to just go by the World Cup we have other tools.
Ballon D'Or is supposed to be about the way players performed, not about their rankings on FIFA and PES.

Regarding Ribery , it obviously made far more sense to give it to Ronaldo for scoring a hat-trick against Sweden.
