Some people seem to have no idea how transfers work. Giving Jones a 4+1 contract means moving him on becomes very difficult. That contract is not given to players that are going to be sold on, that contract is for players that will stay. Rojo was given a 2+1 contract, and selling him amounted to nothing because all that contract did was make him more expensive relative to his quality. We are stuck with Jones.
Just when i think we are moving forward as a club we tie young and jones down to contracts . i hope this is just to get more money because both are not even mid table level players

Yeah you are right about that one. That's the reason why we are fifth and have been a team that struggles to make top 4 for 6 years running, because those who are making the relevant decisions are absolute morons.
His highest number of minutes on the pitch during that period was in 2013/2014, it was total of 2174 minutes, that's around 24 full games in PL. Let's say he was good in 80% of the games(which he wasn't), that's still around half of the games we played that year. If that was his best season that was nowhere near close enough. He was simply never reliable and consistent enough throughout the entire season and his purple patches were always 5-10 games period at best.
Judging by transfermarkt, Phil Jones has played just 1961 minute in European competitions for us (
) . In comparision, Smalling who isn't the most reliable CB ever, has been on the pitch for us for 4797 minutes in Europe. You don't need to look past stats when it comes to Phil Jones and his reliability.
He is played under 5 different managers and never improved, and he is the same since he came injuries everywhere, top clubs can never rely on someone like him. This is one of the most stupid decisions taken by the club.
I hope this doesn't mean we are not going to sign a Top C.B.

I'm not surprised at the reaction on here, but I doubt very much that Jones' injury record wasn't part of the equation when negotiating. Honestly, I don't think he's much worse than Maguire, who would cost us a fortune. To me that says we will either not buy a CB, or we're only interested in someone truly world class. I'm certainly ok with the second option.
The thing that does annoy me is that this would have taken at least 20 minutes to sort out... 20 minutes that would have been better served working on a contract for Herrera or throwing money at De Gea.

Probably reading a bit too much into it there I think. He is a home grown squad player who will be backup I reckon. And now will demand a better fee if we get rid.

It looks like his last deal was 50,000 a week. Which means he has a terrible agent since Bailly, Lindelof, Smalling and Rojo all seem to be on more. But I think this new deal comes with a pay rise.

If we actually managed to renew Jones contract at 50k a week its a great piece of business by the club. Bournemouth could afford him at that wage.
How on earth does this make him more difficult to transfer? Especially in one or two years when the PL-wages will be even more inflated.

Fellaini signed a new contract when about to be a free agent then was sold for £10 million just 6 months later so we may do the same with Jones, either way we’re almost certain to go all out for a world class centre back in the summer to partner Lindelof and Smalling is first choice back up so at best Jones will be 4th or 5th choice if he’s even kept for next season.
If Rojo is on his way out with Darmien I can sort of see the new contract signing. He's homegrown too.

Yeah, but that doesn't fit the narrative of lots of people on here. Sell Rojo and Darmain, get a top CB and keep Jones for our homegrown quota and his experience, sounds perfect to me.
Hopefully,if the reports of Ole getting the full-time position are true,he doesn't become a soft touch on the Glaziers in the upcoming transfer window.Because we seriously need strong investment ,while simultaneously moving on a fair amount of playing personal.
I disagree, I think that Ole and the coaching staff would have a big hand in deciding whether they would want Jones, Young etc, and put their case to Woody, who would have worked out the salary offered to the said player (probably on a similar salary to now), and made the decision from that. Fellaini has gone, and I can only think that he wasn't in Ole's plans, and the club subsequently sold him.
Are you really comparing Sergio Ramos to Jones? Jones is a disaster waiting to happen and made countless mistakes before the FA Cup final. That should have been the final straw.

This makes a new centre back signing less likely. We apparently had to sell before buying for that area last season, and now we are making it harder to sell. The cynic in me thinks that the finding of form under Ole is being used to spend less in the summer.
I think the better option is to get rid of Rojo/Jones, buy a new Centre back and use Tuanzebe as back-up (who has been great for Villa).

Only if the club really wants to keep the player. Fellaini got a 2 year extension and he was sold months later. It doesn't mean that Jones will be here for another 5 years. If his contract ran down we wouldn't have gotten nothing for him. Now he might stay here another year before the board allows him to leave for a fair amount which wouldn't be bad, if in the meantime we got rid of other players that are on the fringes of the squad, fair enough.

Happens all the time. Your post is ludicrous. You have no idea what wages he's on now. Valencia, Rojo and Darmian are all reported to be on higher wages than him, I would get rid of them first.

It's basic stuff here. Clubs use contracts as leverage in valuations. I can't believe you are actually saying this, Clubs could get Jones on a free without this contract, now they have to pay £30m. You are saying the exact opposite of the truth.
I want to be positive about this. I am choosing to interpret this as a sign that management are confident in the Lindelof and Bailly partnership going forward (as I am) and believe Tuanzabe will also offer a good backup option next season. I hope it means we plan to use our resources to deal with other issues, such as right back, right wing and centre mid.

Well, its whats being reported. But I completely agree. There are clubs in the PL that would easily offer Jones 100k a week. Which is why this is an extremely good deal for the club IF the number 50k is true. And why cant a player want to remain at United? Harry Kane signed a new contract with Spurs for 200k a week when he could have gotten double that from us, Chelsea or Madrid.
Massively injury prone and just not good enough, I can't believe we are wasting more time and money on him.

Can't wait to see him score more own goals for us. Top defender. Really just one of the best in the world.
With his injury record, that means he will play another dozen games for us and be at fault for as many goals no doubt.

In my opinion Bailly is the better CB but most importantly he can still improve at his age. I can't say the same with Jones who at age 26 is still playing like an 18 year old. Also at their early/mid twenties 2 years can make a world of a difference. Rio's fee was ridiculed by SAF when he joined Leeds. 2 years later he went on spending around 40% more than that fee to have him signed.
