Yep, a lot of bad decisions has been made in the last few years. Poor managerial appointments, poor signings, playing inferior players over superior ones.
We have really been unlucky with injuries too. I'd say we would have been better off all these years if some of our best players didn't have that penchant for picking up unlucky injuries - Jones included.
We now seem to have a decent manager though, Jones and our best players are staying fit and playing well. Our good and most important players are signing new contracts, and we are advancing up the table and the cups.
Long may it continue.
 
If he stays here for 5 more years, do people think we might seem him score a goal for Utd?

it's been 5 years since his last one.

I think that this is exactly it. Darmian is gone next summer 100 percent. Rojo 95 percent. Valencia might also leave. That means that we need at least two new players in at defence, probably three. Just in defence. And yes, we can and should recall Tuanzebe and we will spend BIG on one top class CB this summer and as you say probably a FB as well. Thats potentially three players, completely disregarding Jones.
With Fellaini leaving and the futures of McTominay and Pereira very uncertain we are looking at least two CMs in. Maybe three. Thats not going to be cheap.
I personally think the only way we are buying someone offensively is if Mata wants to leave. But if he does thats another player in.
It makes perfect sense to keep Jones around for another year at least.
 
If He stays, Smalling will stay too, which leaves us with one question... Koulibaly when? :mad:

The club didn't want Fellaini, that much is obvious when Jose had to beg to get him to stay. The club did want Pogba and Martial and and were happy to sack Jose before selling them. I doubt Ole has that much input on deciding ins and outs, unless both Ole and the club are in agreement, which is the case with Fellaini, Pogba and Martial.

As for Jones I think it's the wrong decision due to the number of average CBs we already have. I would have got rid of Jones and Rojo and brought in one top class CB to partner Lindelof. With Smalling, Bailly and Tunazebe as back ups.

The only positives I take from this contract is that he should be on low wages so selling him won't be that difficult. And if Ole doesn't fancy Smalling or Bailly I suppose he needs to keep a backup. We'll have to wait until the summer to know just how bad this decision was.
 
If he is given the roughly the same wage he had, then i have no problems with the extention. Easy to move on due to low wages if needed.
People being angry abouth this, compared to Smalling receiving a 4+1 year deal on £120k should reevaluate their opinion. That is a contract and player that might actually be difficult to transfer, and the way we are playing now it can be argued that Jones is better suited to this compared to Smalling.

Apparently Clubs will actually be feeling lucky that they can get Jones for £30-40m instead of on a free. He's only on 50k a week don't you know :lol::lol::lol:.

Just as a hypothetical, a club that would get Jones for free would have to pay him 250k a week to pay up to the £40m fee + 50k/wk wages he is on (he'd probably get a pay rise if he moves clubs). That is how ridiculous this supposed fee we can get for Jones is.
 
I'm no fan of Jones but I'm sure the club are considering the turn-over of players required and ensuring this is handled well.

For example, this summer we can expect as a minimum to 'lose' Valencia, Darmian, Rojo and Pereira, with Fellaini having already left. And if one of Lukaku or Sanchez move on then that's six players, including three defenders. And there may be even more.

Yes, the squad needs a lot of investment and new faces but this will have to be achieved over a couple of seasons - not by getting rid of 8-10 players in one go.

I think we can also be sure a central defender will be a priority, most likely to play alongside Lindelof, with Bailly, Smalling and Jones therefore squad players rather than first choices.
 
I'm sorry but no matter how anyone tries to spin it, this is a bad decision. Someone who will injured half the time and awful for the other half. Just awful piece of business there. We're NEVER going to get rid of the dead wood aren't we??
 
Why 4 (+1) year contract - if they still think he can do a job then surely better to give him 2 years and see how he performs?

If he sees this contract out he'd have been here long enough for a testimonial, can't imagine much demand for that.

I've never been able to forgive him for the bullshit stunt he pulled with the Munich rememberence photo (so fecking disrespectful)

If you do not believe that that a 27-year old English international CB on 50k a week is worth at least 30m in todays market you are frankly delusional. Even Spurs would be interested in him at that wage with their homegrown quota issues.
Clubs like Everton and West Ham will be cuing up if we do decide to transferlist Jones.

All of that is completely irrelevant. The whole point was that he is less likely to leave with his new contract. Your point is that Jones moving for a free is more difficult than him being sold for a fee which is wrong.

Juventus' transfer plans must be frying your brain, they go for free transfers all the time when they should be paying fees since that's the better option for them right?

This is one of the most pathetic decisions ever taken by Woody. The guy has been on the hospital bed for large part of his 7 years here. And the rash decisions he takes in match to boot with it.
I am terribly disappointed.

This also means that we have zero plans to bring in new CBs. Almost as if Woody wants to prove Jose was wrong. And that all our CBs are high quality.

Can't wait for Valencia to get 3+1 contract

Don't think we are buying anymore defenders for next 3 years or so.
We have Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Bailly and Lindelof. We are done in that department. High quality. Title challenging players

No, I want Jones to leave, the club obviously want him to stay at least in the short term by giving him this contract. Had he been given a 2-3 year contract then that would indicate we are selling him on. He's gotten the longest contract anyone gets (except for Pogba), which indicates that they want him to stay long term.

Jones will leave the day that the club tells him that he is no longer part of our plans or if he wants to leave in search of more playing time. Both these scenarios are probably more likely than him seeing out this contract. If he is on a two, three or 10 year contract is irrelevant. You can say much about Jones but he will not want to remain at the club if he does not play regularly. And even if he would be a greedy MF as you yourself pointed out he will get paid a higher wage elsewhere so thats not a reason to hang around either.
The difference being that we actually will get paid for him now. How is that irrelevant?
I have no idea what you are trying to argue and I am out of this discussion.

You mentioned couple of good factors, I agree. But you missed the one that is on point here, awarding mediocrity. Which is the issue here. Same as Rojo before, Jones doesn't deserve a new contract. They are bellow the quality required and they are not dependable to be squad players.

Too right you have no idea. You didn't from the first reply. My point from the beginning is that a player leaving on a free is an easier move than a player leaving on a long contract. It's basic mathematics. You then said that a long contract makes it easier for a player to move clubs...which is wrong.

You seem to be focused on this being a 'good' or 'bad' decision. That's not what I was talking about at all. This contract means that clubs will have to pay a fee, it's undeniable fact that Jones would have more suitors if he was out of contract because he would be much cheaper to get.
 
One of the luckiest to ever play for United. Baffling decision to extend his stay here. No point talking about challenging for titles if we're holding onto deadwood like this.
 
He has been a real fixture in the team for the Premier League's most successful managerial start. Not surprising to see the club sign him on.

And people who're saying Bailly gets ahead in ahead of him are off the mark.

Absolute Born winner is Phillip, he would walk into the city, spurs and Liverpool team or any of the top teams in Europe for that matter. I’m simply overjoyed at this contract extension.

Decent squad options are expected to be fit and that's a bare minimum. Mostly injured players taking up two back up spots is not what the team really would want.
