I doubt if other clubs are lining up to buy him for big money. If we sell him, we would get mediocre money.
Potential signings always are, but i honestly don't see how we go into another season with Smalling or Jones as first choice. While Smalling is a good reliable defender neither are good enough if we want to be challenging for league titles. And of course Jones is regularly injured
Lindelof is starting to show real promise but he needs a quality defender alongside him.

I'm speechless. The club is very random with its decisions. "Rojo and Smalling got one, the one is my mate and the other one is worse than me, why can't I get a new one too?" Sympathy contract.
He has played out of his heart and probably through injury this season to secure his contract and what did that tell us? He still hasn't been good enough, or even available at all times, so how does giving him a new contract make any sense? Because he played 5 games under Ole he has turned a new leaf?

Tuanzebe and Fosu Mensah should get games next season. And my choice for a RW would be Zaha who would count as a homegrown.
I think someone is ready to work with anyone and agree to anything just to turn his temporary job into a permanent one. I hope that's not the case. If SAF bend the knee to each and every demand made by his boss we would end up with Hartson instead of Yorke.

I’ve always maintained there’s a quality CB in there somewhere and he’s young(ish) so might as well go all in and back this decision by the club.
I agree with this.
1) I think too much is made of his errors, as I think he is mostly stable and allround quite goodish on most things. Certainly good enough to be a 3rd or 4th option if fit.
2) I’m not sure it makes sense to see him as injury prone at this point. He’s been ‘injury pruned’ yes (I made that expression up), but isn’t it a while since he was out for any major time for something that couldn’t happen to anybody? (Ok, the Jones/Smalling toe incident is a borderline case).
3) We’ll get more money if he leaves. He’s certainly good enough for Everton.
4) He seems serious and knows a thing or two about United as a club under Ferguson, probably a good influence in the changing room.
5) I can’t really imagine he stands in the way much of a CB buy or a Tuanzebe when/if he gets ready.
6) I quite like him as a character.
1 and 2 are obviously the most important points, but given they’re okayish, the rest helps.
Jones made a game changing error against Newcastle, only for Rondon to mess it up. Instead of pointing that out, caftards talked about his 'world class' tackle on Rondon that was made in complete panic and penalty bait (any decent forward would have got a penalty from that just like Hazard did last season).
Jones is the reverse Smalling. Smalling gets blamed for any goal we concede while Jones' mistakes constantly get ignored, usually because he's out injured and we haven't seen him play for a while.

No one is going to pay anything for Jones. If he's not free from contract he's going to retire here and have his testimonial.
You don't give a 4+1 for a player who you think of selling anyway. With Young and Jones extending contracts I guess that's our RB and CB sorted, congrats!!
You know what. If SAF never said he could be the best player ever Jones would have been sold by Moyes, etc. If SAF didn't go overboard and instead just said he could be as good as Vidic, we wouldn't be giving him a new contract right now, because clearly he is not and never will be.

I don't understand what the problem is, he is not world class but a decent defender can bring the ball out and pick a pass. I for one am happy about this he is united through and through and can fill a spot when needed and always gives 100%. what are we meant to do sell all our defence and leave it to lindelof and "place name here" for all of this season and next.

The problem I have with this us we've just renewed both smelling and Jones whilst having bailley and lindelof too.
There's constant talk of us signing a top centre half too in order to partner Victor as the top choice central pairing.
Then there's axel who should be pushing for a slot on the bench at times next year.
Unless my maths are wrong that is 6 possible centre halves at United which is way too many.
I can only see us signing both smelling and Jones up to new contracts so that we can sell them for decent money in a year or so otherwise this just doesn't make sense

He doesn't fill you with confidence when he's on the pitch, even with a decent run of games now, you just know he'll do something stupid (suicidal pass, straight pass to oppo player) to ruin everything good he might have done.

His contract would have expired this summer, so yes if we did not renew it he would have become a bosman player and could have gone for free to where ever, besides, when a player is at the end of his contract its a buyers market, where as a if a player has a brand new contract the selling club has the upper hand. Even if we do keep him its not the end of the world either. Hes not first Xi material, but is decent enough as a backup

Many on here still lie out of their teeth about him. Apparently he's not been bad when it comes to injuries recently? He's missed 18 games in the last 1.5 seasons (that's 20% of games). He got 2 injuries last season, already had an injury this season and is likely to get injured again this season.
I think the saving in medical fees would go a long way to buying a replacement for Phil Jones.
I don't think he warrants 4 years but I know we had to put out a decent deal for the sake of him not leaving on a free. Rojo will likely be going, Jones is #3 option for us ahead of Bailly, you don't sell your #3 before you sign someone new. So we have this situation. I don't think it will stop us buying a new central defender. Lindelof has been great, I rate Smalling, so someone to fight with them would be good.
Perfect documentation of why United are behind Bayern, Barca and other serious European firms. Must be a quite poor of a football club if Woodward counting on profits from sale of Phil Jones. He'll be lucky in getting 15m honestly.

I agreed with extending the likes of Smalling and Young, but Jones really should have been one of the ones to go (along with Rojo) to clear space for a new defender to be bought in.

And since Ole has taken over he's been better than Bailly in their battle to be Lindelof's partner (although hopefully Smalling is now back to take that role).

Moyes, LvG, Mourinho... all gave benefit of a doubt to some players and we all can see how they ended up.
I totally get your point but I just don't want another United manager to be thrown under the bus by the same underperforming players, especially if it's a likeable bloke like Ole.
If Ole wanted that so be it but it's now up to Jones to show some effort in getting into a required level... which is going to be quite difficult tbh.
