I knew there was stockpiling going on, I had no idea it would extend to Phil Jones.
I am surprised, I thought Phil Jones was at £100k/week, unless he took a paycut which is good. £50k per week and injured half the time, still stealing a living.
Jones was a starter in a team that won 9 out of 10, yes a team that that looks shaky defensively and struggles to keep clean sheets. Hardly anything to boast about.
And forget the last 10 games, Jones over the last 8 years here has proven that he is NOT to be relied upon. He has let us down time after time, and injury after another. And when he is fit, he can't be trusted because there's always a brain fart around the corner. Chelsea away last year, Spurs away, Chelsea in the final, own goals left right and centre, fecking tragic. If these decision makers can't see that, it's pathetic and we will continue in this vein.
Again, awarding mediocrity has been one of the biggest problems for this club. Valencia, Young, Rojo, Jones have been long overdue, and here we are 3 of those are signing new contracts. We are not offering this guy a 5 year contract to stop him leaving on a free.
How many better homegrown CBs do we have or plan to sign?
Are you all privy to the contract terms? Unless we've signed him on terms we wouldn't be able ship him out if needed I don't see an issue here.

I wonder how kind history will be to Phil Jones once his United career finally comes to an end, he'll likely get a testimonial (although they mean little these days in fairness) but after say a 10+ year stint at the club - how will he be remembered?

That would be terrible, though I think we will sell Rojo and sign a centre back. This summer we couldn't offload rojo. So including Jones, that's 5 again, and tuanzebe goes on loan again.

He signed a contract of 4 years with an additional 1 year. There's no excuse for giving this injury prone liability that kind of contract. It's really moronic.
Many saying that this could mean no new CB in the summer but I don't think that will be the case. Ideally, Rojo will go and that frees up a spot. Equally, what evidence do we have that OGS rates Smalling? It looks like he will favour CBs who are at least comfortable on the ball. Maybe Mike is on his way?

Figure there is a benefit for bring homegrown, but not sure if it is valuable enough for a 4 yr extension. Can he actually improve? If so, maybe after 4 yrs, this contract looks genius, but between his previous stint & his injuries, I don't think so. He does have the talent but he has yet to have an extended run of very good to excellent form to justify the length.

That's my big problem as well. That is the sort of contract length you give to a new signing.

Maybe it does but it still doesn't mean the club won't look to sign someone. The contract is more to do with his age. You won't often get a player who still has plenty of years left to play to sign a 2-3 year contract. Why should they?
It's difficult to guarantee we'll sign a cebtreback of better quality in the summer because there are just so few about. So letting the ones we have just wall away on a free would be massively dumb. It would also from a purely cold/business point of view mean if we had to pay over the odds to get someone, we'd have no one to recoup some of the money from by selling or having a potential sale value on.
Again I can't get the logic in this thread. A player signing a contract doesn't mean it is impossible the club will look to improve or at some point sell the player. It never has. There is no precedent or logic against which to presume or think this is the case

I too think there is no way he is on the same wages. If Jones is as valued by the club as we suspect he is, he probably got a nice salary bump. He would be stupid to extend for such a long contract for the same wages.

4 + 1 year contract shows that the club loves and values Jones quite highly. And believes he is a top talent and as Ole said he is entering prime, which means we are looking at peak Jones for next 5 years. Whatever that means.

I honestly wouldn't be bothered if Jones was a relatively fit and available player
Jones has 2 own goals, 0 errors leading to goals and 0 red cards in 191 EPL appearances. Smalling in comparison has 3 own goals, 3 errors leading to goals and 1 red card in 208 appearances (according to the premier league). But Jones is the one that is being made out as a liability, the one that costs us every game, scoring own goals left, right and center. Why? Because everything Jones does is blown out of proportion.
If we push out Rojo this summer, I would call it a terrible English bias. It is not fair that we push out one mediocre, always injured player while we keep one.

Terrible decision and further proof we'll have no DoF in the near future. You don't need a director of football to offer Martial and DDG new contracts but its an absolute farce to give both Smalling and Jones new contracts as well as offering Young n Mata 1 year deals.
