I agree to a point - I also think a general election is almost inevitable before xmas - I predict there will be a hung parliament and a coalition between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems.

Labour will be virtually wiped out and hopefully Corbyn will be forced to resign after destroying the party for a generation.

Im not sure I can envisage a conservative and Liberal joint brexit policy though... Im not even sure i could see them agree to a second referendum - and certainly couldnt see either backing the other when the result didnt go their way

If they agree to a coalition it will be on the terms that no-deal option has no mandate (as Conservatives did not win outright majority) so it finally dies a death - a reworded May deal will then be backed and go through (with backstop included).

Honestly Ive no clue what will happen but its fun to speculate. We should start a sweepstake.

Zero chance of the Libs agreeing a coalition with the Tories. It almost killed their party last time.

The Lib Dems are unlikely to go anywhere near a coalition with anybody and certainly not with the Tories. I wonder where people get such ideas from, surely the new Lib Dem leader wants to survive longer in her new job, certainly longer than Boris in his?

What do you mean by your last point? Why can’t the EU renegotiate the WA?

I know they disbanded their team but can’t they just bring it back?

If Labour are wiped out as you say and we have left the EU at the end of October as our new PM has promised, then how will there be a hung parliament?
I do fully agree with you about Corbyn though. With him as their leader, Labour are un-electable and it is about time that the party came to terms with that.
 
Given that the UK is now firmly on course for both a hard brexit and a general election this year, I'm assuming the election would happen first?

Corbyns supporters (ie enablers) are as much a problem as Corbyn himself. You only have to read the ones on this forum to see that.

I'm struggling to imagine what a GE would even look like once ye've already crashed out.

I mean presumably both sides would still have to take a position on a potential trade agreement but what the hell would that be? Plus what degree of chaos will be surrounding the election? What solution would both sides even pitch to the voters amidst the meltdown?

Complete and utter chaos I would imagine, Boris will be bragging he's got the UK out and Corbyn still won't do anything and praying he isn't elected to sort the mess out.
 
Why do people bother arguing labour vs tories? None of this shit actually matters in the context of the next 50 odd years. All we can hope for is some adults to take over these positions of power. All brexit has done is shine a light on these divisions

Well said & I do try not to. I think we need PR, so our tribalistic politicians are encouraged to work together more often to find compromise, like ‘adults’ as you say. No party has a monopoly on good ideas & the to-ing & fro-ing, voting one set of ideas in to half undo the previous set of ideas every few years is frequently costly, arguably counter productive & also wasteful of both time & a lot of energy imo.

That said, Brexit as a 3 year test run for a new kind of politics hasn’t gone too well has it? :lol:

Personally speaking, think a soft brexit given the close referendum result should be the compromised outcome. Hope the shock absorber that is Parliament just gets on with it & agrees as it’s getting incredibly tedious now.

No as the text has been agreed they now only have a legal mandate to change the political declaration
Any change to the w.a. has to be agreed by all the leaders of the 27 countries... Or they have to agree to change the mandate of the EU to allow renegotiation
 
So from the Citi update call, William Hague reckons we've got til mid-September to block Brexit, as the last date a vote of no confidence could force an election on 31 October is on 10 September. Also kind of interesting he thinks it's cabinet versus parliament now and Johnson and the cabinet won't even bother trying to placate more moderate Tories.

Are people still trying to block brexit?

The more this happens the more we lurch towards the hardest of brexit. This whole mess has come from the arrogance of not accepting the vote in the first place (at least after agreeing to hold one anyway). If we succeed in derailing Boris I only see Farage taking his place and then surely the only result is no deal.

Farage will never be PM. Not a chance he could win a general election.

What would be the point? Why should anyone think that a renegotiated WA will be treated any different by the UK than the WA, Membership, or UK exclusive membership?

The UK had agreed to all those too... Why should anyone believe they'll keep their word with a renegotiated WA?


They'll just be back within a week wanting more.

This is bullshit.
The former PM couldn't even get a consensus within her own party. We are not here because people have been blocking brexit. We are here beacuse the people that accept Brexit cannot agree on what type of Brexit they want.

Yes, but thats not why it hasnt happened. It hasnt happened because no one can agree on what kind of brexit they want. You were told this was going to happen at the time. There was no plan then, there still is no plan now. Just a bunch of people screaming at each with really strong opinions based on very little, if any, information.

I beg to differ. IMHO we are where we are because not enough MP's have ever supported any sort of Brexit and never imagined in their wildest dreams that the country would vote for other than remain. Both major parties are equally culpable in agreeing to the referendum.
