SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Good luck enforcing social distancing in pubs in London on a Friday or Saturday night. Not going to happen unless there's a lot more policy around it.

It's definitely a difficult one to get right but I'd rather get more people back in a routine of working before just letting them do whatever the feck they want. We're literally going to have people sat in pubs during the day while we're telling them they can't send kids to school or can't go to work, take a driving test, pay their bills, etc. Then a month later we'll be worrying about brexit, job losses and the lack of economic output.

How does a global vaccine rollout even work? The rich nations pre-mix huge doses of vaccines that look promising and everyone else just gets it when they get it?

Or would there be enough lead time after a certain stage of trials that everyone can ramp up production in time for when it actually goes to the public?

I just cannot believe this government is still standing. Then again, perhaps I can ~

"Good news!", says Johnson, "While we might've been responsible for the deaths of your grandparents, I'm sure you'll forgive us now that I announce: we've given you your pubs back!"

"Three cheers for the world-beating government!" shouts a Conservative MP.

"I heartily endorse this event or product," says government science adviser.

'Independence Day! Bozza and Blighty bounce back!' says the Telegraph.

'Opinion: Is death actually all that bad?' asks the BBC's political editor.

'Thank u Boris,' tweets an imbecile.

 never change Steve

Nobody knows because nobody has ever done it before. We’ll be treading new ground, that’s for sure.

I hope that they are testing the meat connection.
Being said that their latest outbreak was an older European strain that may have come in on frozen goods. Frozen meat perhaps?

A bunch of factories in the US, the weird recent one in Beijing which they blamed on imported salmon, and now this new one in Germany where 1500 empliyees of a meatpacking factory tested positive. It's interesting, though I doubt it's the meat rather than the conditions. Maybe the virus finds a temporary harbour in it rather than sowly drying out in the air, that's the only explanation I can think of. Would be interesting to look at stuff like juice and soup-making factories too.

I think I'm going to choose to let my brain have a day off and enjoy the loosening restrictions as good news.

I think it's likely to be too soon and believe we don't have the structures in place to manage outbreaks but better to enjoy the calm rather than worry about the storm (for now).

That’s actually a decent theory. Although how the virus gets from the meat to their pharynx would be a mystery. Surely basic food preparation hygiene should prevent that?

The more pertinent points in those figures is number of new positive cases and high number of tests which hopefully correlate well to number of people tested and not just untested kits being sent en masse to care homes etc. A persistent trend where recovery exceeds new cases and high volume of testing done with thorough contact tracing during July will be make or break whether we see a second spike in this country

Looking at the link in the tweet, it seems 157, 942 of the 237,142 tests are just tests that have been posted out and not carried out. So only 79k tests actually carried out.

Boris keeps saying it's up to the public to use its common sense, but common sense isn't that common.

Boris keeps saying it's up to the public to use its common sense...
Translation: 'If I don't commit myself, no-one can blame me when this all goes wrong'.

874 cases relatively low so good news.

233 deaths last Tue compared to 171 today. Almost expecting Wed to be bigger.

Hopefully this isn’t news to anyone.

I'm genuinely dreading this winter already. Normal winter has left the NHS increasingly on its knees anyway over the past few years, god knows what will happen with a Covid spike as well.

This sh*t is unbelievable:
Yep. Everyone's had those managers who have no answer to legitimate questions, no real plan, no details thought through, no advice of substance to proffer and the reply is always a stupidly simplistic "just get it done". That's this Tory government. And also the last one.

They've long proven that they can get away with virtually anything, mate, so I don't hold out much hope.

I find it both surprising and at the same time depressing how so many people are prepared to give Boris Johnson and his party the benefit of the doubt.
And I have heard people saying just that.

Depending on which you believe, they have been in charge of well in excess of 50,000 deaths.
Ok. This is a pandemic and some 210 countries are affected.

But come on. This is the United Kingdom we are talking about. And despite all the government self praise, our people are still dying by the hundreds.

I am normally very proud of my country.
But the catastrophic failure of our leaders is embarrassing and shameful.

And yet. People are happy to give them the benefit of the doubt....

And yet as soon as someone questions them such as Piers Morgan, the gammon come out in force saying it’s being negative. It’s pathetic how they have got away with this.

They are just hoping that by then everyone will be too pissed to notice.

You've never been in a meat processing plant, have you? I saw some grim things when I had to go into a couple when I worked as a plumber. Hygiene did not seem to be high up on the list of priorities.

Piers (for the most part) isn't being criticised for slating the government, he's being criticised for being an even bigger dickhead than he usually is. His scaremongering has been shocking, for example when he twisted Nadine Dorries words to claim we were in lockdown (at the level of the first 7 weeks) for 18 months or when he jumps on "rises" without adknowleging it's due to a reporting lag.

While I agree he may have picked on stories which didn’t need it and he is just a knob, he has done a great job at holding this Government to account. Yet his criticism gets buried due to his character.

I agree but he's totally ruined his good work by conducting himself with the class and morals of an alleycat. The govt haven't boycotted GMB because he asks "tough questions" they did it because he never lets anyone (who doesn't submit to his party lines) answer properly and he just shouts over them like a toddler.

Imagine if someone saw one of his sensational headlines and gave up hope?

While he has the stupid habit of talking over people not all of his stories have sensationalist. It’s unfortunate his reputation means we lose another avenue of scrutiny of this Government.

Yes it is. And I am struggling to understand why the public is so defensive about them.
Why...
Their lies are so clear and obvious as is their incompetence.
It is almost as if the public, or many of them have been brainwashed (assuming they have a brain in the first place).

Your opening line is a bit rich considering who Morgan is shouting at. Morals you say?
Chelsea fan - check
Tory - check?
Do you have a penchant for shagging in your Chelsea top?

I'd bet my life that they have. This government demands 'soft' coverage and support from news organisations, in return for access, else those organisations are effectively blacklisted.

Wow, I've hit a nerve *yikes*

I think he has done well in the sense of not giving them softballs and generally holding them to account for clear failures and some of the ridiculousness in which they are parading their work with covid as internationally lauded.
But I do feel like he can get stuck on one or two questions and the flow of the interview doesn't progress much because he's moralising. Very different to Andrew Neil or even Paxman who I think he thinks he's being when he does this who do much better.

To be honest, I always thought that Paxman was just plain rude and arrogant rather than an exemplary and uncompromising interviewer.
