Frank Lampard | Former Chelsea manager

United have shown the capacity to put wins together, as we have done consistently in 2020. Stop trying to deflect from the fact that Chelsea are currently massively underwhelming.
And it wasn't me that brought United into the conversation I was responding to this.

It’s truly laughable to think back to about 3 weeks ago when Spurs and Chelsea were being lauded as title challengers. Several Chelsea and opposition fans were on this forum predicting title wins or top 4 scenarios that didn’t contain United... What a difference 3 weeks make!

Nice try though!

Would you like a bet on whether or not he gets sacked this season? £10?

You seem very sure, easy money for you if you're not talking shit!
Haha apologies, I'm actually wumming for the most part. You must be disappointed with how it's going so far this season though? Money spent and players at his disposal and all that? What's your opinion on the current situation?

It should be a long term project, they're a young team and an inexperienced manager. However, when you spend what they spent in the summer, it stopped becoming a long term project at that point.

Lampard has now started digging his players out and taking the Jose school of approach, stating the players need to explain themselves for recent performances. Lose the dressing room and he's gone.
Goalie, Azpi, Giroud, Kante, Jorginho, Rudiger, Kovacik, Zouma. All nearer 30 than 20

Just as I thought Chelseas season would go. Initial purple patch of form when the new signings have the new club bounce followed by a very rocky and inconsistent patch of form where the players struggle to find consistency. I also predicted Lampard would be sacked around Christmas so we'll see if he can survive through this period.

But lets not undervalue their players, they bought very well in the Summer, but it takes new signings time to bed in and settle. Chelsea will see the benefits in a few months time when they go on a late surge of good form and that will continue into next season, the question is whether Lampard can last it out. I think not.

That original post is accurate. Your response reflects how United have largely been treated when talking about the title race – dismissed to the fringes.

another who got the job because he was a club legend and not his CV/capabilities. People don't need to earn top job nowadays.

Has always been the way. Di Stéfano's Madrid is the greatest club side of all time and at its pinnacle it was managed by Miguel Muñoz, who was their captain on the pitch a year earlier. Fast forward two decades and you have Paisley taking over the greatest English league side of all time and the start of Liverpool's "boot room" policy. The fascination with CVs in football is a relatively modern notion. It is one of the longest-running old boys' clubs in plain view.

Yep. Memes about streaks etc when we have been one of the most consistent sides in the league for a long time now.

2 points off of 2nd place with more than half the season to go.

I didn't expect us to win the league this year (nobody did) and knew there would be teething issues with brining in more than half a team.

6/10 if I'm feeling generous. It's not the disaster some people are suggesting as most are wumming like you!

Frank has shown his ability as a manager last year when he had to work with youngsters and he actually did well. He promoted players like James, Mount, Tammy and others and he was able to achieve a good result in the league.

the challenge this year is the number of signings. This is sometimes a threat to a manager as signing this many players in one season means the team changes. I feel frank still doesn’t know what the starting 11 is. Is werner a LW or a striker? Who is the main striker? Is it werner, tammy or giroud? What is Havertz’s position? How to fit ziyech, tammy, werner, pulisic and mount into the team. It’s not easy to have all these sorted especially when no proper pre-season took place.

also, new signings (especially those from outside the league) take time to settle. Havertz for instance is still finding his way in london, he is not the player who was lighting up the league in germany.

it is indeed challenging for frank. How patient roman is willing to be is a 1 million dollar question

I'll take a £100 charity wager that Chelsea will not finish top four if he does stay until the end of the season. No lack of effort from the Chelsea players tonight, just a lack of real talent.

I'm not interested in that. I am talking about him lasting the season.

And not to be rude but you've been here for a few weeks. I don't trust you to pay out!

It’s also the fact that these people suggest City are Liverpool’s nearest challengers with a straight face. They are so far off their expected level.

The only way he gets sacked this season is if you quickly get knocked out of Europe (possible), the FA Cup and drop to bottom half of league... and stay there.

If not, sure he's here next season but not much longer unless he shows a significant improvement.

Allegri feels nailed on at some point to be next Chelsea manager given they've hired plenty of Italian ones under Roman.

Could well be in next 6 months if Lampard dosen't get top 4. Going to be very close you suspect.

I agree with all of that.

I get the point you're trying to make but Paisley had been at the club as assistant for... 15 years? Watching and learning from the managers. Slight difference.

Ya but United and City both have 2 games in hand on Chelsea so that gap could easily stretch to 6 to 7 points with a blink of an eye.

I never quite understand posts like this. Unless you are saying duffer himself was the person using a lack of players last year as an excuse (in which case, I apologise!), then all you are really doing is pointing out that one person said something last year and an unconnected person said something different this year. The thing about hypocrisy is that it usually has to be the same person who has held both views.
You're new here. Give it time and that shit will erode your soul.

It's different but I'm not sure the distinction distracts from the broader point. Giving Frank Lampard the Chelsea job would be a bit like giving Steve McClaren the United job in the early 2000s. Sir Alex thought he'd earned it on merit then from being an assistant, Roman thought Frank had earned it from being a player under their managers, I think in both cases that has more to do with football being an old boys' club than any idea of meritocracy.

Considering games in hand equivalent to points in the bank is very bold in this season in particular. Not saying you aren't in a better position because you are, but saying that the gap could "easily" stretch seems a reach.

Well I think there is a high chance that one of United or City will bank those points. Not claiming that United in particular will, although one of the games in question is against Burnley.

That's fair enough! Apologies as I wasn't trying to be antagonistic and I don't necessarily share the rosy outlook of the other poster, but your point is well taken.

His football seems to be at odds with the make up of the squad.

If we're entertaining the notion that Chelsea will be on lookout for a new manager soon, I'd prefer to wait for the right man (Nagelsmann?) rather than grab whoever is available mid-season

This is 100 percent an uphill struggle you've identified. Lampard has given himself almost two team transition within the space of under 2 years. While their is a probability for success I think it banks too much on factors that are otherwise non-influential such as players hitting the ground running immediately. This has also been one of the biggest problems we faced under past managers. If you bring in an influx of foreign talent it needs to be levelled with domestic talent for the team to have balance in the progression and development side of things.

No worries, you made a valid point, can't take any match for granted in the PL.

Because they are the only team that have the capacity to go on a run and potentially challenge with them over 38 games. They probably won't but they're the only one's that have a hope.

Chelsea and United are too streaky while Tottenham's football isn't sustainable.
Speak for your own club. United are no more streaky than City. This City are not the same animal who produced 100 and 98 point season's respectively, despite what the media insist.

Man City game will be off.

And yes.

Either way, why not wait until halfway until you post the halfway points totals.
And then add Wolves in

Reddit saying Lampard is on thin ice and that Tuchel is waiting like a vulture to swoop in.

Allegri is a good shout but to be honest there's a whole host of managers I could see at Chelsea from Tuchel to Nagelsmann to even Poch if he doesn't take the PSG job

Nearly half their team has Covid, the rest are awaitng results and their training ground is closed off.
I hope the game is played but I can't see it.
But tonight was called off because it was so close to kickoff and they didnt know who had it and who didnt.
Theyll know all of that by the weekend.
It has to be played. Even if the bench is full of u23
