Absolutely. The media are supposed to hold the government to account.Imagine my surprise.
The Government and arms of its governing power such as the Police are comfortable lying to our face repeatedly - the media will plaster those lies on tabloids & media, to skew & curate the national opinion in its favour. Then they'll turn around and issue an apology for lying & twisting the truth in small print on page 34 bottom right two weeks after the fact, while a fresh set of lies current cover the front page.
It's a shambles and we're doomed to suffer in its cyclicality because the British public quite simply don't care enough - as a whole we will just gasp in shock while we sleepwalk into authoritarian power.
Absolutely. The media are supposed to hold the government to account.
Who holds the media to account?
The people, but they don't care.
Apparently Priti Patel has spent over £100k of public money on lashes & eyebrows in the last 12 months, and nobody will care enough to hold them to account for shite like this.
edit - this whole thread is insane, her expenses look more like money laundering than legitimate spending & if it is legitimate then what the actual feck?! and if it's money laundering then seriously, why has nobody set something on fire yet?!
I saw thishas to be money laundering. I’m sure the Kardashians collectively don’t even spend that much on eyebrow threading in a year.
Yep. She’ll come out of this smelling of roses. This sort of spending of the public purse should be a sackable offence, but no doubt she'll issue some statement that says it's not as it seems and she followed the rules.
Then she'll come up with a new way of taking away the human rights of refugees and all will be forgotten, because this country hates the 'other' more than the known enemy.

If this was to be investigated, what would the next step(s) be? What’s the process over there inside government?
Will it even be investigated? This would be red meat for any media outlet here.
Where is that information coming from?
Sounds a bit familiar. And I take it that media coverage of this won’t matter much to the electorate? They would basically be investigating themselves, or at least their buddies would investigate them.

Slightly disingenuous to say all the spending is done by Priti herself for her personal benefit, but it is her department spending and she has oversight and ultimate approval.

See? This is why I ask! It makes me feel better about the state in which I live eviscerating basic voting rights immediately after an election they lost. What media coverage
The media were more appalled that a Labour MP bought some airpods.
How on earth do you spend £5k in primark?

I'd have to disagree with you profoundly given the nature of the bill.I'd say the twits who rioted did more to show that the bill is justified than some misleading press release from the rozzers.

There's a better chance of getting support from other less vocal strata of society through peaceful protest rather than violent. Hopefully the cause will swell and we'll see mass protests. People get turned off by rioters. I'd say the tories are praying that people kick off and give them the publicity they need to demand passage of the bill.

Peaceful protests do not make the news, do not get into anyone’s consciousness and do not make anyone listen.
Who watches the news anymore?
Over 50’s mainly. One third of our population.
Exactly
I replied to your other post and conceded you were right.
But I still think shit needs to burn to change things. Marching and kneeling hasn’t worked.
I get the sentiment but I think you might want to get used to the idea that you've lost. Adam Curtis always ends his docs with the daft sentiment that we can change everything back to better. It sounds nice but it really isn't going to happen.
Oh dude. I’m pushing 40, working for a tenuously ESG-led Financial Services company. I’m a Champagne socialist if ever there was one. I concede my morals far too often.
I know it’s gone. But I still support the people I wish I was.
I mean, look around you at the young people. They just don't inspire me that much. Most of the loudest voices in this thread probably wouldn't dream of going to a protest and put their job or whatever in jeopardy. It's why Labour is flailing...people get angry about stuff but most aren't being exploited by capitalism any more, they enjoy the gifts that it showers upon them. iPhones, HDTVs, Netflix, lattes and the like.
I think in 50 years when dystopia has really taken hold then you might get an uprising, but it isn't going to happen over the stuff I read in the CE Forum.
