Pep's spending is insane (£941m and counting at City)

Facts say otherwise.

City's next spend in the summer was around £42m which includes £21m spent on 3 youth players! Season before it was around £75-80m. Season before it was a profit made in transfers.

But aye City net spend is £150-200m every season...

Barca fans and finance don't mix - which is why they're 1.3Bln EUR in debt.

Pep must have now also spent more money than any other manager ever?

If we adjust for inflation, then it might actually be Mourinho since he started spending big already in 2004.

Pep was blessed with the most golden of golden generations in Barcelona and he took over a treble-winning Bayern that didn't need much strengthening. It's when he got to City that his spending got insane.

If city win the league again this year (they will) then I won’t even care.
The Ben Johnson of the football world.
Came from nowhere had a brief period in the sun and then everyone realised they were cheating.
Only difference here is that city will be allowed to carry on cheating but whatever , crack on gents, hope you enjoy the plastic

A City win means almost nothing. The fact that United fans pull for City when Liverpool is challenging for the PL should tell them how little it means.....it's an entire nation funding them. It'd be like Canada buying United and using tax payer money to fund purchases. How can anyone compete with a nations unlimited resources

This is a good point. SAF would obviously be the highest if inflation was included. While opposing fans like to say we outspend everyone under SAF we didn’t actually have a huge net spend but if inflation was then we would obviously be top. Imagine what we would of spent for Rio, Veron, Berbatov and especially the young players like Rooney and Ronaldo as clubs like Everton have much more money so 30m is nothing to them.
If it was 100m for a WC player since the PL began it be SAF, then Jose and Pep. Though SAF spend 21 years in Pl so it be expected

Perhaps but only because he managed at the top for so long.

United were rarely the biggest spender in the PL era only 2 or 3 seasons under SAF.

Pep is a genius manager, albeit still flawed in his own right, don't think we can dispute that. However, he's never been asked to actually help build a side to improve multiple places and ultimately win a title. I have more respect for Klopp in that he did that with Dortmund and Liverpool. Obviously Fergie did it north of the border with Aberdeen then did it again with United and totally rebuild the team a few times.

Barcelona was the coming together of the best La Masia has ever had to offer and then peak Messi with amazing teammates. Bayern are who they are in the BL. Then City, who plucked the main football people from Barca and heavily invested under previous managers, continues to spend handsome amounts in successive seasons under Pep. That's almost 200M per season spend at City with Pep.

A bit of a cliche at this point but I'd want to see how well he does with a team like Atletico or Inter - i.e a club capable of winning the biggest prizes and one that doesn't possess the infinite resources of their rivals, and aren't the default league champions in their country every season. I think he'd genuinely struggle trying to shoehorn the players he'd have at his disposal or realistically sign to playing his system.

Knowing him, his next move would probably be PSG where he'd spend another billion failing to win the champions league but racking up a healthy number of league titles, thereby again being lauded as a genius.

This is purely hindsight, nothing tells us that that Barcelona team would have reached the level they did without Pep.

It's all fun and games until we see "European Super League Pt: 2" by way of response from the big clubs across Europe.

Do you think the owners of United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, Madrid, Juventus etc...will just sit back and let the plastic oil clubs takeover? Of course they won't!

I guarantee the same fans saying "but but United spend xxxx" right now will be the first one's wailing on Twitter when it happens

Erm the plastic oil clubs are all invited to the league so I don’t want what you’re talking about.

He's implying that the money made by Man Utd plus the other super League clubs would dwarf that spent by Man city which is probably true. If half the argued 300million man Utd fans spend £1 a month on a man Utd super League TV subscription you would have a -minimum- revenue of around £1.5BILLION a year. That's why these clubs are fighting for a super League and that's why it will probably happen. UEFA share the money (and take tons of it themselves) - if the TV money of the CL went to those 12 clubs even oil money wouldn't compare - the numbers I put forward in these debates are usually pretty conservative, my belief is that each club could earn upwards of £3Billion a year easily

I always forget how precious they get when you mention Pep, pretty sure more than a couple got banned for it.

As part of the contract to compete in the Super League all clubs had to agree to strict financial constraints, basically no club would have been allowed to spend significantly more than the others. And unlike FFP I imagine the clubs would have enforced those rules. If the Super League ever rears it's head again as it surely will. You can guarantee those sames rules will be involved again.

That's objectively false though.

Rijkaard won the CL and La Liga double before Pep showed up. And Luis Enrique won the treble in his first season for Barca shortly after Pep departed.

The backbone of Pep's great Barca team were also the backbone of Spain's greatest team ever.

All the evidence we have suggests they would have been successful irrespective of Pep's contribution.

He has earned the right to demand the squad he wants to be honest. He has won 9 league titles in 13 years of management. That’s insane.
Hopefully this signing puts a stop to him crying about how he can’t sign hundred million players.

Would love to see Pep do a rebuild job at a club one day. He's great at going into to clubs with great teams and making them even better - but would love it see if he could do what Klopp did at Liverpool for example.

Potentially 8 players (with Mahrez and Laporte) costing over £50m on their first XI. United have 3 in their history. Chelsea 2. Liverpool 1. Arsenal 2 soon.
Maguire, AWB, Pogba, Di Maria, Sancho.

I think we have a similar net spent to them in the last 5 years, and also since Fergie left.

For me, his reputation took a big hit when he went to Bayern. That was his first real test without Barca's star players.

Bayern went to the CL final under 2 different managers in 2010, 2012 and 2013. And then Pep arrived. And not once did they go to the final under Pep's 3 years. He failed at the Semi Final stage against all 3 of the Spanish big hitters (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid) and much of that failure was down to him. He got thrashed in two of those, horrific tactical set up.

Then he went to Man City and he got knocked out of the CL by Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham, uhm Lyon, Chelsea.

I don't even have to say anything. That pretty much speaks for itself.

At the time I posted it was correct, no?

Who are the nailed on starters for City's attack then?

Amazingly Mahrez is probably the one who will be rotated the least, the rest will no doubt be in and out (apart from Kane if he does end up signing)

Whatever about their spend their squad is insane.

Like no one should be getting near them.

No other team in the league has close to that kind of depth. Hell most of us still have holes in our first 11 never mind in the backup 11.

Obviously Kane is TBC but he is doing his best to ensure it happens.

That B team wouldn't win the league, that besides the point though I don't think I've ever seen a side have that level of squad depth before. Ridiculous amount of uncontrolled spending

Yeah I don't agree with thee tweet about the B team winning the league but as you said it's besides the point.

I don't think I've even seem a team come close to that kind of depth

You'd be surprised

What if Pep agreed to manage us before he went to City?
Would the Glazers bow to his demands and have Woodward work harder to get Pep’s players?
If so, would you still be complaining “if” we spent that much?
Probably a big part of the reason he chose City. We can safely assume he doesn’t care about the controversial owners and just wanted the platform with the most money.

That’s also why he waited - the hard graft of the earlier City managers wouldn’t have been appealing at all for him.

Guardiola hasn’t proven he is a great coach until he coaches some lesser team of average players and makes them better. He has spent over a billion at City and the other clubs he’s spent many millions or inherited world class players. Like Formula one, the team with the most money hires the best engineers and drivers and win consistently. The much hated Riaola said once of Guardiola, who he hates, ‘ let him coach Grimsby Town to the PL title and then he’s a genius’. Has a ring of truth.

Just seen a quote from pep in 2009 saying he doesn’t understand why teams go out and spend 50 mil on strikers when there’s one waiting in the youth. Has this guy ever heard of a youth team? How times have changed.

Yeah I thought the same.

Reading this thread you’d think you were on a Burnley forum!

They’ve spent ridiculously under Guardiola particularly regarding their CBs, but I think in general there’s a case that City’s spending has simply been very good with their technical advisers doing a great job.

Players like Aguero, Silva, KDB, Fernandinho, Sterling etc have been great signings at good prices.

If he gets them both, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly and we’ll Guardiola can incorporate Kane and Grealish into this City side, as neither of them are players that’ve played in a similar system before.
