Problem with regs is that the sport has been too fast moving and too many weird situations this year and the rules just aren't robust enough to cope.

That's the part that breaks their own rules. They should have not let any cars pass or all the cars pass. The only problem is if they let all the cars unlap themselves the race would finished under the safety car.

I do want to say though, although I’d very much be in the ‘Team Lewis’ camp… It’s absolute bollocks that the world championship can be decided in this way and the fact we’re still not 100% sure who is the world champion 3 hours after the race finished. It’s shocking incompetence.
This is another level obviously with whats at stake. I'm sure they can pay/gather a collection of stewards for one day. The rules weren't adhered to today, that's enough for me to void the result. And yes Max would still be WDC in that case.

there’s only one way to resolve this fairly. wolff, horner, hamilton, verstappen all stand on the start/finish line and see who can piss the furthest.

They do know it because the rules state if you let unlapped cars pass the safety car can't come in until the following lap, which in this case was the last lap therefore nothing would have changed.
If the didn't allow unlapped cars pass the race was over as Hamilton had a 5 car buffer, if they did allow they had to have one more SC lap. They did neither, Masi literally made it up.

If it goes to CAS, I would suspect Mercedes have a strong case. The rules don’t only say that all lapped cars have to be let through (if they decide to let them through - they had an option not to), but also that the race resumes on the NEXT lap. Not the lap that it happens. There’s two quite clear contraventions there, I think.
It’s fecking crackers.. the more I think about it, the more I can’t work out why Masi did what he did. He knew that by making that call, he was handing Max the title. Lewis was a sitting duck on those tyres vs Max’s.

I don't expect the title to change hands and I don't even think, for as much of a complete twat he and his fans are, Max himself would deserve that.
This has definitely damaged F1 though, and it needs fresh fans to come in. The one time they had a shot (and even then, for a joke of a decision), they completely screw it. The only decision they have here is to either double down and be farcical, or change the title and be farcical. As other's have said, I fully expect Masi to be gone and people to take that and forget about all this.

No it doesn't matter. Cars being alongside each other under a safety car happens all the time, and two cars alongside each other going around a corner means technically there's going to be instances where the car behind is fractionally ahead, without passing.
Lewis was about 0.6s ahead at the restart.

Broadly there were two ways the rule could be applied while under the safety car.
If they don't let any cars through, Hamilton wins the race in pretty much every scenario.
If they let all the cars through, the race finishes under the safety car and Hamilton still wins.
The obvious problem is that neither side can be 100% sure of the outcome in the first scenario, but considering the winning margin was just over 2 seconds, and it appeared that Hamilton backed off towards the end of the final lap, I'd say it leans in his favour quite considerably.

I’m starting to think they’re going to give Max the 5 second penalty for the SC overtaking to avoid this going to CAS…they know they’ve monumentally fecked up. It’s their out no matter how ridiculous that penalty would be - it’s within the rules to give it.
The logical steps (in my mind) if they decided to correct would be:
- The error was only allowing some of the lapped cars through.
- Even when they did, the rules state that the safety car should be in the next lap, not the lap it happens.
- In which case Hamilton would have been at the front and ergo would have won.
If they decide the act, it’s not about handing Lewis the win. It’s playing the steps of what would have happened, I guess.

Even worse then. I went out after the race and have just come back. If they are making the rules up on the fly it's not a sport it's an entertainment business.
This is like how I felt when I thought an act of God (pandemic) would stop Liverpool winning the title. It didn't.

I think plenty of people had mentally resigned already around lap 52-53 when it was clear Verstappen couldn't close the gap fast enough. If the race had ended under a Safety Car I don't think there'd have been as much outrage. This really does have an artificial feel over it, as if they just had to make the last lap competitive.

I am still absolutely amazed that the race director’s reply at the end was that this is motor racing. Formula 1 history is full of races finishing behind the safety car and this is the same guy who ran a race for 2 laps only behind the safety car in this season itself. ITo decide a championship that has run over 8 months by this one moment of madness just because you think it’s probably great for Netflix is absolutely insane. The race was not even close and no one would have batted an eyelid if it had finished behind the SC but to bend the rules just to get drama is so bizarre and then to end it with this is motor racing is hilarious. Try using that in the court if you get sued

This is how I feel. It would be an unjust penalty but you can’t apply the law to the letter for one and not the other.
Yeah and that falls into the same category as Seb's fueltank leak disqualifying him. Technical regulations have always been different to racing regulations.
Although you could actually argue that a 0.2mm wider DRS might have given him an advantage in qualifying, since no one can be sure at what point the DRS flap started failing.
