Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Sure. But there's also comparisons to Kashmir, Palestine, Yemen, Muslims, Christians..etc etc etc

There's another time/thread for that.

The truth is that this is a bigger problem for Europe because it is in Europe. All wars are bad, but some are worse for others.

Europe isn’t only full of Europeans and those Europeans aren’t all the same race or religion. I also think that some peoples personal feelings and trauma has been amplified by this conflict and it is wrong to dismiss that. You kind of allude to that in your last line also, not only worse, but different. I don’t think it is your or my place to tell people who have been directly or indirectly impacted by this conflict or others when is the right time to share concern or emotion especially when nobody is dismissing what is currently happening in Ukraine where I think we are all in full agreeance that it is nothing short of vile and heartbreaking.

Its not an excuse. Its just my understanding of why Russia wanted to invade. I didnt say it was morally correct and defended Russian blatant aggression.

And yes NATO needs to back off. No superpower will like their sphere of influence reduced. US has historically reacted like that so Russia response is very much in line with that.

As far as Ukraine is concerned, i couldn’t care less so my observation is not based on emotion. Both NATO and Russia are responsible for this and Russia should not have invaded and is much larger guilty party. But it was put in a very difficult position with NATO expanding eastward. There are no black and white answer here.

Your post literally excused Putin's actions and placed the blame for the conflict at NATO's door.

To my mind 'not caring less' about a country does not imply objectivity either so I'm not really sure where you're going there.

How should NATO back off and how would it end the conflict peacefully while ensuring Ukrainian sovereignty remains intact?

I do think it's out of order to use an ongoing humanitarian crisis as a springboard to discuss something else that's not directly relevant in that specific thread, as I think it draws attention away from the central issue. Which is, when all is said and done, killing and destruction on a massive scale. Maybe shameful was a little strong, but I do think it's out of order. The poster in question agreed it's one for another thread, though, and I also said that I wasn't trying to minimize the significance of some of the double standards in reporting etc.
There are plenty of posts in here which are not directly about this conflict. Not to mention, if your concern was drawing discussion away from the most pertinent matter, then the best course of action would have been to ignore it. But you didn’t and here we are.

Anyway, I’m done with this discussion. It’s clear you’re entrenched in your view / whatever underlying belief you have that’s clearly driving your entrenchment. And, your one point I do agree with, it’s not on topic.

So apparently Russian planes have violated Swedish airspace during an exercise.

Putin's in for a rude shock if he thinks he's going to walk over the Swedes and the Finns. Sweden in particular is well armed.

Hope they join NATO asap.

Of course it's a major event given the current situation. But Russian planes violate the Swedish airspace about 10-15 times per year. Most of the times it's due to bad navigation.

We're not really just sharing emotion though. There's too much going around in confusing logic circles for it to be pure emotion. It's confounds everything, especially when I'm looking for updates and tweets about the situation in Ukraine.

IMO there is a need to recognise things the West could/should/must do better, but not while the bombs are being dropped. If the time must be now, there's a separate thread for it.

Tagline checks out. Have a nice day.

I been a pos to assholes in this thread. Anyone I have assaulted has deserved it. I don't give a shit anymore. Redcafe is a terrible place nowadays. The fact that you were best newbie promoted is a testament to it. The mods let anyone spread any lies and anti-vax bs and conspiracy theories as much as possible. They let hansifickmich troll the United forum. They let Russian trolls spread their bs, heck one of the mods is a russian troll pos.

There is nothing good about redcafe anymore after SteveJ and Olly have left and Hectic taking a break, mockney or brwned not writing much. I don't give a shit if I am banned. If I see an asshole in this thread I will call them out if I want to.
You're a pos

Depends where you go, Wibbs. Some good coffee shops around. The mainstream ones like Costa and Starbucks are awful though.

We never found one last time we were home. Better than the states mind. Australia is also only second to Italy in coffe quality I'd say so we are spoilt. Doubly so as we now live in and around Leichardt which is Australia's Little Italy.

Agreed.

Very frustrating at times, especially on serious topics like Ukraine, Covid, etc (where some of the posts/posters are unbelievable shite). Use “ignore“, walk away/get a drink… helps a bit. And remember there are a lot of good posters too?

Yeah, I've heard about the quality of your coffee shops. Naturally you'll struggle in the UK for coffee.

I'd use ignore for certain people.

Generally I don't like ignoring too much because you can create an echo chamber, not seeing other views. However for the person I ignored, I can gladly say after viewing the ignored content now and then in quotes it's only solidified my initial reasoning. =]

Hopefully that came out wrong but Jesus it sounds awful

Or a Space X Dragon, or the upcoming Orion? There's only one American astronaut scheduled on a Soyuz launch.

The space agencies managed to keep on good terms all through the Cold War so it would be very disappointing if they've fallen out over this.

With a moron like Rogozin, what do you expect?

You guys don't get it, you've not walked in my shoes or lived my life. My comments have nothing to do with support for Ukraine, Ukraine deserves all the support it can get. I'm just shocked by the contrast in reactions. Nation states are facilitating people to go defend Ukraine. I spent my whole life terrified of the consequences of expressing support for people in Kashmir or Palestine. If I had ever dared to say Muslims should take up arms to defend people in Kashmir or Palestine, i'd be rotting in a prison cell. Regardless of how I felt, i could never express those feelings. We don't even express such feelings amongst friends or family, because a private conversation today can lead to a public comment tomorrow and then you've got the state down your throat labelling you a terrorist.

Quote from a British fighter in a recent book on foreign volunteers in the Afghan-Soviet war:

I think maybe the Bosnian war was the last time Muslims could mobilize like this on behalf of their co-religionists and receive a pat on the back from the West for their efforts, although there was a brief revival of this facilitation in Syria and Libya from around 2011-2013 which ISIS actions put an end to.

Honestly don’t know what their goal is anymore. Are they actually trying to start war vs NATO already or just acting tough?

I think this video was posted earlier but this explains why. It's all about oil and gas. NATO is just a diversion I think

Imagine if this was Muslims going to defend a Muslim country...
And what would happen then?

The closest recent historical example I can think of would be 1980s Afghanistan...

And if I recall the CIA covertly armed and trained them

There was even made a film (Rambo 3) about them being heroic.

Long term didn't work out so well but closest example I can think of

Yes it did. I obviously dont mean about the pain normal civilians are facing right now. It was more meant for normal times and i agree i should not have mentioned it like that.

I think you will find that we have banned and infracted numerous posters for anti-vaxx and covdiot nonsense.

I have no idea who you are talking about in the United forum. Report their transgressions if you think action is needed.

I also think that we have moderated the Ukraine thread well. If you disagree report posts that you think have crossed the line.

I.have banned you for 3 days. Not for any transgression but to give you time to decompress as you seemed on a path to Caf self destruction . After that it is your chouce but we would prefer you stuck around.

Forgive me if it's been mentioned already, but that massive convoy heading to Kiev, why has it not been bombed already? Drones, ground missiles, surely all those are options? If they're not, why aren't NATO countries sending over those weapons? Surely it's far better to destroy it on route than to allow it to reach Kyiv and cause mayhem there.

Nice to still find some justice in the world

I've read enough of you and others. Please kindly feck off.
Then I suggest don't read it? That was obviously meant for normal times and in the same reply I mentioned Russia is the guilty party. It was poorly worded so I can understand it was incorrectly perceived. No need for profanity.

It's a good question, but an important point might be, that it simply is not on route at all, it appears to be the world's biggest traffic jam at the moment. It's a distance you can easily drive in half a day, yet they are barely moving forward. So they might be hit if they start moving, but at the moment it might just not be that important.

Sure seems like the Russian bot factory is in full swing on Twitter today. Account after account with minimal follows and following pushing out similar material and the hashtags.

A word on UK nationals going to the ME to fight; you can’t just associate and link this to the war in Ukraine without looking at the various issues in detail. Simply putting them all under the same umbrella is silly and misinformed.

There’s a number of listed proscribed organisations in the world which are illegal to join many of which exist from within countries in the ME. This is due to terrorism and other extremist ideologies along with the risk these groups pose internationally.

Organisations are proscribed based on intelligence. I’ll mention Libya as it came up. Manchester was bombed by extremists who had came to the UK as refugees but then went to the country and trained and fought with a proscribed organisation before coming back to the UK to kill children at the Ariana Grande concert. Others then fled back to Libya to hide.

There’s a huge worm hole you can fall down here but surely people understand the need to restrict and monitor those who choose to go and fight in the ME given the extremist camps and anti west terrorist organisations that influence and groom fighters from within?

Each situation is of course different and you can go back hundreds of years to throw up different views as to what’s right and wrong. The fact here though is Ukraine is the victim in an apparent de-Nazification started by Putin (although it seems some agree with him?).

There’s currently no laws or proscribed organisations leading the resistance to my knowledge so legally there’s no issue with people travelling over and picking a side. That may well change as time goes on but we are where we are with it currently so to blanket compare it to the ME is quite lazy and misinformed as each scenario has different factors at play.

Yes, why not please?
Probably several reasons for it. The convoy is protected by anti-air weapons, the Ukrainians don't have the capability to destroy it, the Ukrainians might think it's a waste of their capabilities to attack the convoy and they're reserving it for other locations.

Yes, why not please?

I imagine because Ukraine has no air superiority and are using its weapons elsewhere, potentially strengthening the west of the country
