F1 2022 Season

Russell will take time to adjust. Hamilton may be in the latter stages of his career, but people so easily forget that he’s a very, very fast racing driver. I expect Russell will not have the same distance in qualifying between him and Hamilton as Bottas did, assuming he settles into the car. And I do expect he will be closer to Hamilton than Perez. But I still think Hamilton will still have the edge. It’s a lot easier to push the car right to the limit in a Williams when you know you have to have a chance, to be in a competitive car fighting for pole.
Bottas's biggest issue in qually was his inability to brake as late as lewis. Lewis has always been exceptionally good on the brakes. It will be a good test for george over the course of the season to see how he does in qually.

Also russell has a driving style which is reminiscent of Button, Prost and Jackie Steward. Very smooth, so the car may suit his style or it may not. Lots of unknowns.

A previous poster mentioned Perez have great racecraft but not so great in qually. Schmacher, despite his poles was never known for his one lap pace, he had outstanding racecraft. Alonso is another not known for his one lap pace, but his expectional racecraft.

I know a lot of opinion on the 2nd Mercedes is hypothetical, but Russell jumped into Hamilton's car in Bahrain 2020 and put in a race winning performance. I doubt their design philosophy has shifted dramatically in 2 seasons, so I don't think there is any reason why Russell cannot be on the pace right away.

For the first part it's just different takes or different approaches, it's all a done deal so no matter.

For the second part maybe you will have to google Spirit of the Rules or Within the Spirit of the Rules, sure - no offence, but if you don't understand it don't worry about it, it doesn't mean anything these days anyway although people like to quote it. F1 isn't a Gentleman's sport anymore, scrutineers don't have it as a numbered item on the list of things to check under the hood anymore.

Oh I know what the spirit of the rules means, I guess you were saying that the spirit hasn't mattered for a while? If that's the case I don't really agree, or at least in Abu Dhabi they took a huge step further away from it with a pretty unprecedented interpretation/throwing the book out of the window.

Still, nice to have this discussion respectfully, time to look forward to Bahrain, be interesting to see how the new race direction works.

Could see Russel outqualifying Hamilton a fair amount this season, if he really is what he's hyped up to be. His point of reference for teammates isn't useful though.

Yeah, let's get away from last season.

Masi didn't misinterpret the Spirit of the Regs, the rules were there and he was encouraged by the weasel to apply them inconsistently. Horner in the reverse situation would have been arguing for the rule to be applied correctly. As it is, he's no gentleman anyway, he won't have believed what was happening and his luck, rubbing his little paws together, the rules and how he can work within them, outside them, to lose someone their job just to suit him and his team his only goal to win. Any misinterpretation of that rule has been closed off, not a spirit of the regs.

I'm really digging Vettel's homeless/surfer look

First comment on the video
Every race weekend, one of my favorite moments is right after the opening title because they keep that undertone beat from the theme song and the commentators start introducing us to the race day….gives me goosebumps everytime…..
Exactly the same for me...

If you lot were in Wolff’s shoes, would you go for Russell like he did or Norris instead?
Russel. As dislikeable as he is, he is Mercedes backed and has shown incredible speed. Well worth the gamble.

Russell over Norris, no question.

I'd have gone Russell too. Russell beat Lando in F2 back in 2018 I believe. Huge talent, very good driver. Let's see if he has the necessary ruthlessness to become world champion material. He has to show he's willing to push Hamilton to the max.

With the new Pirelli compounds, I’ve got a feeling we’ll be seeing consistent two stops at most races this year.

Bahrain wouldn’t surprise me that we see a three stop for some teams due to the wear rate on this circuit.

Norris is a journeyman f1 driver like Sainz. Good but not world class. Think the likes of Fisi, Ralf, Checco etc. Ricciardo will demolish him if he gets on top of the car this season.

Russell is class and it’s demonstrative of his achievements in the Williams.

lets see what the punishment is for forcing people over the white lines then
I hope a 10 sec stop and go. I really wish to never see "give the place back" again as a "penalty".

Given how they've gone about things these past years I have no hope though.

Ocon's side pod just exploded on the straight. The whole right side of the car has been obliterated. :nervous: :nervous:

Looked pretty bad on Lewis' run as well. Can't imagine the headache after going through that for 2 hours.

Mercedes does look terrible in fairness, Red Bull already dialled in.

Hamilton posts fastest lap... goes seventh
That's right, a 1:34.941 from Hamilton is seven-tenths down on Gasly and is seventh on the timesheets.
Hmm. Surely some more performance in that car.

Sky being a tad sarcastic I think.

I would salivate at the prospect of a Leclerc vs Max championship, would be so spicy.
